Civilization V has been announced. (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
The promised features look interesting. I've never actually been that good at civilization but I'll give it another shot.

I'm a big Civ fan going all the way to the first one. Very excited about this.

looks pretty cool, only issue with Civilization is that different civs are too balanced, and that isn't historically accurate at all ;/ but i have fond memories of playing Civilization II on Playstation when i was like 5/6 years old and raping everyone else over and over...and the Civilopedia was fun to read

Interesting. I wonder how it'll improve. Personally I feel the full 3d is completely unnecessary (pre-rendered 2.5d looks better anyway), but it wouldn't be any other way at this point. Time to upgrade.
I've always wanted a nice little mafia-type game like this, sort of a civ clone at city level whereby your "family" competes with others to take control of the city.

I stopped playing Civ after Civ II. I don't know, it became like Caesar for me. The first one was good; the second was lots of fun; the third had so much shit going on to manage at the same time, I didn't know if I coming or going, and could never get a handle on anything.
Who knows if I'd ever buy another of those games to play, with the experience I've had as they've come out with new versions.

I loved Civ II, but when Civ III came around they just ruined it for me cause they set up the research tree in such a way that everything was obtainable at roughly the same time things were obtain in history. I loved the fact that I had airplanes by the late 1200s and could just raid and pilage at will.

Well, some technology historians suggest that had the Library at Alexandria not been destroyed, we likely would have had most technologies 500-750 years sooner than we did. I'm assuming of course, that your civilization did build that wonder, and you didn't destroy it.

that wonder and others to help me ensure my tech research was booming (most of my funds were allocated toward research)

That was typically my strategy, too....I would devote major resources early into tech/research/wonders. Of course, then when I was light-years ahead of everyone else, switch to Fundamentalism, and go on the warpath to wipe everyone out with my superior military tech.

I always used the pacifist approach. I would get light years ahead of everyone else ensure that all my outer cities were heavily fortified and then wait for them to begin to demand and threat that I share my tech which would be the excuse to a mass my forces along my border with them and the the just do the stand off cause they would immediately send the "I see you're getting ready to invade....bring it one" which I would ignore until and wait for them to invaded my land.
While waiting I would try to diplomatically issolate them so that when the inevitable crossing of the border happen they were already weaker then before ensuring I would take their first city I came accross before the end of the turn and then start the whole waiting game.
It was fun watching the citizens revolt and join my nation before I had a chance to wipe them out.

Civ III was actually the weakest of the bunch. It was way too easy to win even on Deity.
Civ IV was the best Civ game ever, period. If you haven't played it, you're really missing out. I think the complete version is $40. Buy it.

I might have to do that (or just "acquire" it)

As a 15-year-long Civ addict, I'm pumped!

Indeed. Even five years later, I can boot Civ IV up and spontaneously lose 12 hours...

The features listed dont seem all that new, but Im definitely primed for more Civ. I jumped on the bandwagon only recently but immediately became an addict. The game is so damn fun and I havent even explored all of the options/civilizations/difficulties.

The only thing I don't like about civs is the ranking system, it always gave me a low score no matter how many civs I conquer, research/tech I develop and whether or not I make to Alpha Ceturi.

I want to see a sequel/reboot of Alpha Centauri. I loved having the power to custom-build my units for specific roles.

your difficulty/speed to beat the game is too low/too slow

Oooh... I didn't know a Civ V was on the cards. I put in many, many, many hours playing Civ I/II/III/IV - so much so that I developed on overuse injury and had to give up playing computer games because of the repetitive mouse action. Civ V would be very tempting though... but I suspect the specs on my current (old) laptop wouldn't be sufficient to run it so that will probably save me from injuring myself again!

Very excited about this, although I still think I haven't fully emplored Civ 4 and its expansions. Just not enough time these days. I remember all those 20 hours sessions I've had in the past. 7am and still saying to myself "ok, just one more turn". I'd go hours and hours without food/water/going to restroom.
