View Full Version : Winter Olympics coverage sucks as usual.

Well, it's another Winter Olympics and they're cramming figure skating down our throats just like they always do. It's the same with the summer olympics and gymnastics. These sports that require judging should be removed from both the summer and winter olympics. Nobody gives a shit about the human interest stories and sappy monologues about the personal lives of the competitors and nobody wants to sit and wait for a bunch of pompous, so called expert judges to express their opinions about who wins an event. A lot of exciting events are ignored so the networks can pander to these boring sports which don't even belong in the olympics. They belong in the circus. This is crap. I want to see athletes beat other athletes fair and square, not because the judges like them better. Get this shit out of the olympics.

Hey now speed skating was supposed to be on tonight. They had a problem with the ice and are pushing it out to late night coverage.

Even Hockey has refs that can deem a goal sound or unsound. I personally like all the Winter sports and figure skating. I think they're more objective than you think, I mean it's pretty obvious who can pull off a triple lux and who can't.

Perhaps they could keep all judged contests on certain channels and all non-judged events on others? Then if someone wanted to watch one and not the other they could. Or design it so you could subscribe to which contests you wanted converage on?

A) The networks wouldn't show figure skating in prime time if people weren't watching it.
B) I've been watching speed skating and moguls.

The stories had a human touch to the stories. and the media is really big on human touches right now. Maybe from increased separation due to technology? I dont know.

I'm enjoying the Olympics, commercial-free...

Televised sports haven't been about athleticism for a very long while, now. It's a shame, no? Commercialization kills authenticity.

Officiating is not the same as judging. Watching conpetitors sit and wait for a subjective score ruins the basic premise of head to head competition.

Does anyone else find curling truly laughable?

Curling is chess on ice. It is awesome.

Wholeheartedly agree with the OP, although I would strongly recommend tuning in to international channels (preferably websites). NBC blows chunks. Its Olympics coverage always has.

Massive fan of the Olympics, but even the coverage in Canada has been a little silly. I got really tired of the Canadian channels trying to depict Dale Begg-Smith as some sort of Bond villain. I just want to watch the games, not watch a biography on the athletes.

The solution is to allow full body checking in figure skating. :)

I think the strongest case I can make about taking figure skating out of the Olympics is that no male athlete should ever wear sequins outside of a gay bar.

Actually, I think it'd be a lot more fun to require that all male athletes wear sequins. And tulle. I can just imagine the football uniforms, can't you?

I've been ice skating more than half my life. Believe me; it's a lot less subjective than one might think. You just have to know what to look for. Obviously, someone falling on their bum is a good reason to knock off some points, but more subtle things like landing too much on your toe pick or whatever aren't very visible to someone who doesn't skate or at least know about skating.

*sigh* I'd settle for watching any of the events. Darn TV-hogging fathers.

One good thing lately seems to be that it's more about the individual athletes than nationalism and the Cold War. I hated that.

I've enjoyed watching the Biathalon quite a bit this year, a good mix of endurance and skill with the prone/standing shooting sections. I was very happy for Germany last night, when I heard on the radio that Neuner had won gold.

As much as I love to actually snowboard, I find watching it to be as boring as batshit.

The rest kind of gives me a "meh" feeling. I've always thought that "snowball fighting" wpuld be a great winter sport, with extra points awarded for hitting your opponent in the eye, and making their eye ball hang by the optic nerve"

(after all, wasn't that the reason school teachers would tell us why we weren't to throw snowballs at school?)

American Idol and the like are predicated on the subjective score....and those shows always have high ratings.
I'm not watching much but the Hockey; I did watch the opening... but the ratings are in, and it seems people do want to watch.

I figured out a long time ago that TV does not cater to my personal taste... ;)

I miss when they used to wrestle naked and people died. Well ok, half down.

Am I going to Hell for that?

The anchor-set of that dark-haired man tagteaming with the jetset blonde is good for laughs. Somehow I get the impression that they are using NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) based on how the two of them move their hands and use nonverbal feedback when 'interviewing' and talking with athletes and sports reporters. The last few days I saw them he seemed irritated with how she was talking, looking at the camera with an expression of disgust when he thought she was in close-up. Ugh. All sorts of small errors with mics and call-outs to particular commercials too (NBC).

Every single olympics there is an issue in gymnastics with the judging. I think it is, and will always be flawed.

Speedskating is awesome!!!!
