Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys are gamers? Do you prefer console or PC games? Are there any specific genres that you particularly like? Finally, what, for you, are the most important aspects of gaming (gameplay, graphics, music, etc.)

I'm a console gamer, and I mostly play adventure, strategy, and role-playing games. For me, the most important aspects of gaming are gameplay, music, and, if the game is an RPG, the story. My favorite games that I've played are Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy IX, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I'm a lazy gamer. My favorite games are RPGs, strategy RPGs (basically, Fire Emblem), side-scrollers, and rhythm games. I'm not a big fan of FPSs, but I basically grew up on emulation, flash, PC games, and the occasional console game at one of my friends' houses, so I haven't quite gotten the feel for all the controls. My ENTP mom basically enforced a video games ban until my parents divorced.

Sorry, I must have forgotten that. :( I'm pretty sure fighting games would also fall under the "Action" category though.

Fighting Games under action?!?! You're digging your hole deeper and deeper >:)

Cause I'm borderline P/J, F/T but since I tend to feel like acting more than not acting I put myself slightly more in the J, and since this silly INTJ forum limits your type to four letters I combined INFJ and INTJ and voila! NFTJ : ) the BEST OF THE BEST!!!!

I like the Resident Evil/Silent Hill games. They combine strategy, puzzles, action, and adventure. They keep you thinking and on the edge of your seat(which is saturated with urine because you are too freaked out to go to the bathroom). Survival Horror is the technical name of the category.

I also enjoy driving and flight simulators.

Battlefield 2 is fun sometimes. I usually play as commander, or as a pilot. RTS games..meh. I tend to build a totally impenetrable, gradually expanding base(s), and my enemies just give up after a few hours. Or they are engulfed by the slowly expanding wall of tanks, SAM sites, and anti-infantry structures.

Strategy/Simulation Games like Civilization can be fun. I think you should be required to play several dozen successful games of Civ3 before you can be in any sort of civil management position. ;D

I used to be a high scorer in the 1980's on Space Invaders.

I also loved those "test your intelligence" video games that would ask trivia questions.

There was also a baseball game I enjoyed where you hit the button and a pinball came out, and you had to hit it with the little bat.
The ball would go flying and you would score points based on where you got it to go to.

Nice. :) My husband is an officer in Tacticians of Vengeance on Kithicor. I had taken a long break but recently started up an Illusionist. I can't wait for RoK so I can get that and the other two expansions I'm missing, and finally get into AAs and such. :)

Puzzle and role-playing, usually. *I prefer my games to be like interactive books or just relaxing. *I hung out in arcades or the houses of my apparently rich neighbors. *Took me a while to get used to these fancy schmancy three-dimensional games, but I'm better now. *I have never gotten into any computer game, besides Nethack. *::) I'll buy any kind of game as long as I have heard its music and think that it is achingly beautiful. I've got a PlayStation One, a GameBoy Advance, a regular Nintendo, and a Nintendo Revolution (also called the Wii, which I don't like). I gots to wait for the price on the PlayStation Three to go down, that I might play those Shadow Of The Colossus and Ico games. Seems to be the only reason to get that system.

Im a gamer since I was 3 yrs old and never stopped, now I'm 15
I play RPG(mostly),MMORPG, FPS and RTS(a little)
I play console more than playing pc.
The best game in my entire life was ~~~~~~CHRONO THRIGGER~~~~~~

I voted Action, Adventure, Roleplaying and Platformer. My favorite games are the Xenosaga series and the Metal Gear Solid series.

I have to admit I was kind of disappointed that this thread was about video games though. Doesn't anyone play the dice-rolling variety anymore?

I'm pretty big on games. For the most part I like consoles the best. Primarily SNES but I've got a Wii and PS2 also. I've been playing a lot of Nintendo DS lately as well. o_O

I played the original Everquest for a shamefully long amount of time. If I had spent all of the time that I did raising cartoon character's numbers and looking for better pairs of magical pants on, I dunno, stock investment, I would be rich beyond my wildest dreams. *sigh* :P

My advice to people thinking about playing MMORPGs: Don't. ^_~

I really dig RPGs (Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG probably being tied as favorites ^.^ I liked Final Fantasy 6-7 a lot too but have been disappointed with the later ones). I'm addicted to Tetris DS. I've been enjoying survival horror too (Resident Evils, Silent Hills, Manhunt, ect).

I'm very keen on games. My favorite genres are RPG and RTS, and I like platform, action, adventure, simulation and MMORPGs too. The latter could be seen as a very bad time investment, but I see it as yet another way to socialize on the internet. Especially as people in MMO's respect skill. Especially since we have a lot of that..

My favorite games ever are: Knights of the old Republic (Bioware studios), Dungeon Keeper (BullFrog studios) and Warcraft3 (Blizzard studios).

I seem to have a natural talent for RTS and simulation games. Is that the intuition/thinking combination at work?

Oh darn, when the subject line said "gamer" I thought it might be beyond video games, which I don't do. :(

I've been a wargamer for years (the old Strategy & Tactics type) and have played D&D as well, back when it was "Basic D&D" but not on a video game.

The closest thing I do to videogames is Destruct-i-Match II on Neopets. har har

Does that count?

I grew up playing text based MUDs (LP player killing servers mainly). Never got into the WOW versions though.

Only games I get a chance to play now are first person shooters, Call of Duty 4 ATM . I have an obsession with the sniper rifles mainly and will happily sacrifice a 4:1 kill ratio with the common guns for that perfect ~200m head shot. :)

Hdier
12-18-2007, 09:27 AM
I like first person shooters as escapism and to relax, but any game that makes me think is wonderful (though mindless games can be fun once in a while, to). Thus, I love games such as Bejeweled 2, especially the Puzzle mode.

Yeah, I like the puzzle games like Bejeweled and stuff. There's a way to play Scrabble with people/your friends on facebook...lately thats been a big distraction..

My brother was a huge warcraft/everquest player for a while, so I kinda got my fill of those through him. (He's a couple years older than I, so I was that little sister... *knock knock* "whatcha doin????" ("playing warcraft") "can I watch....please?"

Scrabble, Boggle, any word game is good for me (I've even made up a few simple ones that rely on a large vocabulary). I am told that I would like the Sim games, though I never tried them. I enjoy the only Tycoon game I've tried, a demo of Coffee Tycoon.

I'm a videogamer, but I don't really spend too much time on it, I like adventure, role-playing, action, and strategy games.

I have been playing a lot of Resident Evil games and Smash Bros. Melee lately, I don't play WoW or anything like that because it's those games that addict me to the point that I can't stop playing.

Sweeeet... I still crack out Sim City 2000 from time to time. Bejeweled is fun, too, but I tend to sit there for hours and hours trying to get my score higher when I play, so I don't do it that often. Yes, I think you're right they have too much of a focus. I don't know if it's me but I like my strategy games as universal as possible.

I've played videogames since I was a child, as soon as I could talk. I even write reviews for a free magazine in my country. My favourite genres are RPGs, FPS but just the ones where you use your brain a little(Half Life for example), Adventure, and I like simulations of everything from sport simulations to racing to life simulations. I really like games like Sims, SimCity and CIV because I can control everything and see how it works out, and these games are not linear, because they let you be creative and make whatever you wan't and most importantly they let you test it, you just click the play button in SimCity and see if u were right, Sims also, CIV is the same, only difference is you click next turn
I'm waiting for Spore this year, it should be a great game, because it's a combination of Pacman, Diablo, CIV, Simcity, all the games that I like.

I'm a big fan of space sims (like Wing Commander and the like). It's just a shame that developers hardly ever make them. And when they do, they're usually made by an Eastern European company with terrible voice acting.

The best space simulator I've ever played was Freelancer. The game was virtually perfect (except for flawed science) -- the voice acting and gameplay were equally superb. I wish someone would make a sequel to that game.

I also enjoy shooters, because they are the closest I'll ever legally get to bringing my sadistic fantasies to life, the rest of which I must let my introverted intuition handle.

I don't play videogames so often now. Before I'd play some action and RPG titles, mainly the Final Fantasy games, the Devil May Cry series, Onimusha games etc. I also dabbled in GTA3 and Resident Evil 4. However, I'm a scaredy-cat so Resi 4 really frightens me, so I'm not even touching other survival horror titles, or FPS games which I royally suck at. Not a fan of racing or beat-em-ups.

Not hate. I'd say probably on the lines of not into gaming as much. Like weekend gamers.

Computers are the classic and they are more flexible than consoles and take a lot more effort and dedication to maintain them as gaming platforms.

I didn't tick strategy games however if I had the attention span I'd really enjoy them- however I do not like playing games at the computer.

I mainly play RPG's, Adventures and platformers. I am a large fan of nintendo games. I also play sports games but only when they are changed to be something like Mario sports which make them hardly a sport game anymore. Same with racing games e.g. I love kart racers but not realistic racers- I hate those!

I also enjoy rhythm games. My favourite is the Dance Dance Revolution series. I like rhythm games that use special controllers.

My favourite games/series are the DDR series, Zelda series, Mario Kart series, Suepr Smash bros. series and my favourite game is Kingdom Hearts however I did not enjoy the other 2 games (not counting the mobile one) in the series.

I like RPG's too however sometimes I dislike how they don't give you much freedom. Which the worlds are often huge, your interaction is limited more to text-based interaction. You can't break stuff like you can in Zelda.

PC RPGs also. By the way Uytuun, your avatar was the portrait of my first ever RPG character. Her name was Earalilia D'anoncles, a thrilling computer generated name. She was a druid. Pretty soon after, I started only playing rogues in NWN, so I adjusted my portraits accordingly.

I love Elder Scrolls RPGs. Morrowind was awesome, I played through it at least three times, finishing all the main arcs. But when my brother reinstalled it and lost my level 45 character, I could never find the motivation to play it again. Oblivion is even better, IMO, though it is frustrating when you start coming up against crazily well-armored bandits that the Archmage ought to be able to kill with one spell.

I play WoW. I've gone through periods of complete and utter immersion, but as of now I'm just playing casually and spending most of my online time researching different things, educating myself, discussing things on forums etc.

I used to really enjoy The Sims, my computer is an old piece of crap and cannot run The Sims 2. I've also enjoyed Need For Speed and Morrowind. Occasionally I'll play some Mah'Jong, Bejeweled, or Poker on Yahoo.

My husband gets into all sorts of games... strategy games like the Total War series or Master of Orion... alot of shooter games... racing games like Test Drive Unlimited... he's a game conniseur of sorts and I like to watch him play different games and ask him about the game play and mechanics of them, rather than learning to play them myself lol.

Also, that 'diagram' that was posted to suggest what sort of system to play on... very true... imo, those who really love games go for PC because there are endless possibilities of modification to increase longevity for whatever game you enjoy.

No kidding, that's why I usually create a class with a major skill for each attribute and reconcile myself to mind-numbingly boring training for the first ten or fifteen levels. I don't know how many skeletons I summon, only to attack them over and over with a nearly worthless fire spell just to be able to win fights later. I also have a ton of mods, though I am usually more concerned with archery. I tend not to directly use spells in combat, I like sneaking up and shooting them with my bow much better:p

God Awful is a special class reserved for games that are truly God Awful. You can claim the FF line or WoW have serious issues, esp. for more seasoned gamers. However, to claim that they are God Awful, terrible, or whatnot shows naivety to just how bad games can be.

You'll also get lovely comments like "Halo sucks" or "why does everybody think halo's a big deal?" And not realize the timeframe of the game, the graphics/control/UI of the time, and how much of a leap that game is. Go back and play Goldeneye, and see how fast you gouge your eyes out. Smash Bros is still fun today, but the low res, one analog stick, "click to aim with a psychotic, mind-of-its-own hand" Goldeneye will *not* impress any longer.

Its still considered amongst the most influential shooters of all time, and many have fond memories of it.

Criticize games objectively, rabid fanboism is ulcer-inducing.

heh, sniping is the only way i play oblivion, sneak attack bonus and it's usually one shot=one kill, poisoned arrows for the tougher enemies (marts mod, random lvled mobs instead of everything your own lvl or near it)
also use a huge AoE 30' low dmg spell for flushing out enemies...or just to toss bodies around ;D

Fanboyism made me lololol. I have all three consoles, a PC and both a DS lite and a PSP. Fanboys are little kids who can't get a job and can only have one console for Christmas because his parents are too cheap and don't want to become jealous of the other amazing consoles he can't play so he instead bashes them to feel better about the fact that he fails.

As for Halo, I told you, it's a good game, even by todays standards it still is fun. What I hate about Halo is the sequels. Two was terrible, Three was okay but both far lacked how blown away I was by the first. Other than LOLNEWWEAPONSPLANETSSTORYLINESETC there was nothing truly "new" or "innovative" that made the first one stood out. They felt more like expansion packs then true sequels.

And I'll be honest, I'd rather play Mary Kate and Ashley Sweet 16 License to Drive than WoW, and FFXII is just plain stupid- I'd rather have FULL ON STRATEGY or FULL ON COMBAT not some weak half breed blend of the two.

Where did I call you a fanboi? I said, fanboism as a concept is ulcer inducing, and some of your statements were headed in that direction.

Halo 2 was weaksauce plot wise (and had significant departures from the books), but the graphics are probably still the best on the xbox. Bungie did some serious voodoo hacking to get that working with DX8 on a cut down GF3 GPU. Multiplayer also formed the gold standard for LIVE functionality; many of the innovations used in its matchmaking and party systems are still used in some form or another across many titles.

I'd agree about Halo 3. It was average and was kind of the required finisher for the series (something about "forgetting the ending"), but wasn't really remarkable otherwise. Fun multiplayer, but not worth spending a whole lot of time on.

I've never gotten into the FF games, but they really aren't my cup of tea to begin with. WoW was decent, and is a truly great example of closed loop feedback in gameplay. However, there are significant faults with the game and I won't fault anyone for hating the grind that forms the core gameplay concept.

Fable 1) sucked, 2) didn't look better. VERY limited environments and draw distances, and it didn't have normal mapping.

Chronicles of Riddick also looked good, though I'd have to look it up to see if it featured all the same rendering abilities of halo 2. Even then, it didn't have the environmental size or draw distances.

Not familiar with sudeki, so I can't comment either way.

My favorite series of games is the Super Smash Bros series. It involves constant competition, strategy, tactics, background information, advanced techniques, and intense mindgames. I did not figure that it could be so involved until I started looking at professional level Super Smash Bros melee gameplay. It has recently become five times funner and more challenging. Sadly, Brawl looks a lot easier to play professionally than melee. I am disappointed that they targeted the noobs.

I recently got bioshock and finished it, I have to say I was very impressed. I usually enjoy games because of good back story and I felt bioshock had plenty of it. The great back story is also why I love the half life series so much, I recently finished HL1 again and it was still awesome!
The only other game I play regularly is DotA, a warcraft III: TFT mod that is awesome and challenging in many ways. If you have warcraft 3 and the frozen throne lying around I'd highly recommend it, be warned thought, the game has a very steep learning curve.

Yes! To Europa Universalis. What is the least likely country you have made into a great power (I prefer Victoria, but EU can be fun too). I played (through the various converters) one game from the beginning of Crusader Kings till the beginning of Hearts of Iron (I prefer the original HoI, part II is too clunky and slow). As Iceland I managed to colonize the New World. Unfortunately Iceland doesn't survive the transition to Victoria and gets lumped in as somebody else. Also, because the nationality of your colonies doesn't become Scandinavian, you can't build factories there unless you get to full citizenship (which is always hard, and I think requires a communist revolution).

I like how dynamic Crusader Kings can be.
You can be some count of somewhere that no one cares about, with the right inheritences, everything can change. Count of Moskva to Russian Emperor was the biggest I played and the mongol invasion did not make things easier.

I also prefer Victoria, I like how a game can give you so much control over certain aspects and I also really like stats and pie charts which Victoria has in abundance.

My all time favorite franchise is Ratchet and clank. I really like the combination of shooter platformer. I wish they'd add more puzzle elements too. Zork was an awesome franchise. i wish they'd make more or convert it over to ps2 or 3 or xbox. Conflict Desert Storm 1, 2, and Global Terror all 3 take #1 on strategy and are friggin' awesome to play

I used most of the legacy gaming systems. I remember the old Intellivison the most. I loath the treadmill of upgrading hardware on PC/MACs so I completely abandon it a few years ago.

I currently have a Xbox 360, Wii and traded in a PSP for a DS. If I could do it over, I would have got the Xbox 360 and the DS. The Xbox 360 lets you download to try before you buy. I think that is the biggest selling point of the system. The DS is cheap, very portable, just works and has great games.

I have played and enjoy playing most kinds of games. I don't play FPSes much at all; most of my FPS time has been on TimeSplitters with RL friends (though I haven't played that for years) and in UT2004 in instagib CTF (one shot kills capture the flag).

With RTSes I mostly play Starcraft.

I don't play a lot of TBSes though I'd like to play a few multiplayer games of Fall From Heaven 2 (speaking of which, if anyone in this thread has Civilization IV, PM me please).

I've played a fair number of RPGs, mostly JRPGs, in particular Final Fantasy (I've played 5-10, X-2, a little 11, and 12, along with some of the spinoffs; I haven't beaten 5 or 6 (got about halfway through 5 and 6, with "halfway through 6" meaning that I could've gone into Kefka's Tower but still didn't have most of my characters but I've beaten the others each at least once, not counting 11 for obvious reasons).

I enjoy some platformers in reasonable doses, though the 3D Mario games generally force me into binges.

Sims is also pretty fun, although that's about the only simulator I enjoy much (tried to get into SimCity 4, the fact that neighbor deals are basically mandatory turned me off).

I've played a few MMOs as well, mostly World of Warcraft (stopped in 2006, don't intend to return) and EVE Online (stopped in late 2008, may go back to it at some point).

Last night I binged on Monster Rancher 4 and will probably be continuing to do that for a week or so.

It has a lot of nostalgic value for me as well, spending hours after school and during weekends teaching myself moves and having these massive, seemingly endless tournaments with all my cousins and uncles and everyone. The number one game on my to-play list at the moment is The Sims 3. Medieval II: Total War was my 2007-2008 game, but I've yet to play Empire. Eh, the traits system is better than the "neat, playful, nice..." system they had before, yes, this much is true. The fact that the entire neighborhood runs simultaneously and that you can leave home without a load screen is also nice. That...is pretty much the end of the real innovation from Sims 2 to Sims 3, that I've seen anyway, and the latter mechanic isn't all it's cracked up to be in practice, as far as I've seen. That's the problem to me: they didn't manage to spice it up enough. I honestly would've paid $50 for an expansion that kept the whole neighborhood running at once and removed loading screens to Sims 2, if it didn't wind up halfassed like this.

I've played about 10 days in-game (probably somewhere in the vicinity of an hour, not counting stuff in Buy Mode and Build Mode) with a family of 3, though, in addition to doing reading, so take this as you will.

At this juncture, FPS is the genre that most captivates my funky self. I regard S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl as the current yardstick by which FPS games should be measured. It has its flaws, sure (such as horizontally-inverted weapon models and unnecessary weapon cocking animations such as cocking a weapon every time you pull it out even if a round is already chambered which in reality would result in the ejection of an unspent cartridge), but is still fantastically captivating. All the flaws it does have are shared by other games, so I'm not singling out GSC Game World in my criticisms (which I try to keep constructive).

Killing Flo0r is my most recent obsession. It's not as captivating as STALKER. And the environs aren't as compelling as the Half-Life series. But for sheer visceral thrills, it delivers in spades. It has certain dysrealisms with the weapons. Also, the Benelli M3 Super is permanently set on pump mode for no apparent reason. They should have made it a pump-only model like a Mossberg 500/590, Remington 870, Ithaca 37/87, Winchester 1200/1300, Fabarm FP-6, or whatnot. The the real M3 Super 90 is select-fire and is intended to be set on semi-auto for heavy loads, pump for light loads (since light loads don't cycle the action of an autoloader reliably unless it's designed a certain way).

I haven't played Left 4 Dead, but I've watched it being played and have seen quite a few gameplay videos on YouTube. It to0 features a Benelli, but it's an M4 Super 90, correctly presented as an autoloader. However, the capacity is wrong. In the game, it holds 10 rounds. The real one holds eight (7+1 standard or 6+1 Magnum). To hold 10, it would have to have a longer barrel fit flush with a longer magazine tube, but that would mean the barrel would be longer than 20" which is a no-no for combat shotguns because it makes the weapon to0 cumbersome.

The pump shotgun in L4D is an Ithaca 37 and the weapon model lo0ks great. However, it holds eight rounds when it should hold five. There's an 8-round version of the model 37, but the magazine tube is nearly as long as the barrel (which is 20"). The 8-round verison of the Ithaca 37 was used by Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese in The Terminator. To remedy this problem, all they need to do is mod the in-game weapon model, giving it a longer magazine tube. I doubt anyone will do this, though, because only I and a few other gun-nut gamers care about details like these.
