Having read through this forum, I am getting the vibe that INTJs are a pretty anal bunch. On a scale from one to ten, how anal retentive are you folks?

Probably 8 here. I am pretty anal about most stuff, but I do not sort my thumb tacks by colour.

I'm anal retentive with things I know a lot about but with things outside my area of expertise I don't comment, even if I think it's wrong, because I'm not sure.
Things like improper word use and whatnot really make me cringe.

LOL at number 8.
IDK I went with ten though I guess I'm a bit lower. When I'm awake enough I'm very anal but most of the time I'm so exhausted from school I don't have time to reorganize my sock drawer.

However when I'm talking about things or talking to people I'm ALWAYS anal- I need proper grammer, proper titles, proper quotes VERBATUM (if your going to quote something from a movie or song, do it RIGHT DAMMIT), etc.

I'm not technically an INTJ so I probably shouldn't vote, but I would probably fall on option 7 easily. Just for the sake of comparison. Also, I assume that most J's would tend towards anal-retentive traits.
Speaking of which, I heard somewhere that anal retentive is hyphenated if placed before the word it modifies, and not hyphenated if placed after it. The only thing I can't figure out is how to know when one word modifies another. I think it modifies one in the first paragraph, but not in the second one. This is driving me crazy now... can anyone tell me when it should and shouldn't be hyphenated?

I'd say that I'm moderately anal, which probably makes me pretty mellow for an INTJ.

Yes.

I find it ironic that you spelled 'grammar' and 'verbatim' wrong.
I don't know, I think there's a difference between being anal retentive about things you love and therefore want to see be done right and just anal retentive because you're anal retentive. Considering the perpetual mess in my room, I don't look like I'm anal retentive, but if you give me a short story to proofread I appear extremely anal retentive to people who just don't seem to care as much about the fate of the story as I do.

Yes.
Would you happen to be one of the people who can tell me this? If so, please explain to me when anal retentive should and shouldn't be hyphenated.

low to moderate retentive, purposeful mispelling tweaks me (such as leet speak) generally any mangling of the english language to seem cool. I quell the urge to beat people with a dictionary...so it doesn't show...but inwardly...

Nah, but someone, somewhere knows the answer.
(don't you hate asking questions of smart-ass INTJs and getting crappy answers like this? ...don't answer that!!)

I voted six. What is anal retentivity?

Come on, no one crosses their legs when they sneeze?
Quite possibly too much information :stunned:

I actually looked it up.
According to dictionary.com (which may be a dubious source), 'anal retentive', without the hyphen, refers to somebody who is anal-retentive, while anal-retentive, with the hyphen, is an adjective.

I voted 8 for the French Revolution analogy, and that's probably pretty close. Maybe I'm more of a 6-7 as I get older.
Also, if you're going to be critical of spelling and grammar, please try to model proper spelling, grammar and usage yourself.
Abusing "your" and "you're" drives me crazy, as does exchanging "loose" for "lose".
