Personally, I primarily use Opera.

Used to use Opera until I experienced problems with it waaay back when. Switched to Firefox and, for the most part, happy. I do like Opera's ability to keep everything open, but I'm sure there's a plugin to do that w/ Firefox.... I know if I kill it via taskmanager, it will restore session ;)

So does Opera, plus it saves sessions of open tabs, handy, they open in a new browser seperate from the one currently open, all search engines in an instant, or favorite news sites, any session set of pages you want...all without leaving what you're doing. Email, bittorrent, all built in. Some very nice page tools, like auto refresh with a timer you can set per page.
Tried it way back when too, hated it then, buggy, bloated, generally crap...they improved it massively. It can be a mem monster >.> but i forgive it ;D

Opera definatly. The only problem I have with it is with flash, where you need to click on a flash object to enable the controls of it.

I use Firefox on all my computers. It's faster and has more useful features. The other great thing about it is that since I've been forced to use my old K6-2 @ 350MHZ computer due to the system failure of another computer, it still works on Windows 98SE (although it's kind of slow). Of course, they're going to drop Windows 98 support in Firefox 3. :(

I'm using Konqueror at the moment, as it has all the features that I would need from Firefox, integrates well with KDE, and is far faster (and isn't a memory hog). It has mouse gestures, ad blocking, many built-in "quick searches," and it doubles as an excellent file manager. I'm still waiting for Konqueror to be ported to OS X, so I'm using Safari on my Macbook.

Internet Explorer if I want speed and stability (haha). Firefox if I want usability. Safari if I'm on a Mac.

I'm very distrustful of Firefox when it comes to pages with a lot of magic (plug-ins, movies, animations, etc). IE just seems so much... Faster. And more reliable. But not by much more.

Well technically netscape is no-longer supported. I think you can download the final ever build still but it will not recieve updates any longer. It's a shame to see one of the first ever browsers die.

1.) It is free.

4.) It works on all the platforms I use - OpenBSD, Mac OS X, and windows.

Hehe, heavy lean towards firefox in that poll.

Should really be a multi-choice poll tho, since I use different browsers for different things.

Linux user here, and a little too fond of doing things manually (read: Gentoo) :P

So for checking out CVS(or other type) trees, lynx does a very neat job. Easy, no mess, no need for a whole big window to get a single file, no hassle.

For normal browsing it's firefox, mostly due to the fact you can have add addons to it to help make your life easier.

Konqueror mostly to impress the "Aero is the prettiest EVAR" windows turd that swings by my house, since it responds to the QT widgets you use at the time rather than a preset theme :P
I'm not a mean person, I just wish I were :P

But yeah, interesting results =P

Firefox, and it's rise to the top, is often brought up as an example of what Open Source Software can achieve.
A shining example of what can happen when you have the imagination, talent, and input of a community, rather than the Microsoft "Because I say so" approach.

Firefox continues to evolve, improve and grow based on user input, commits, etc, while things like Internet Exploder evolve on the basis of reluctant updates when the Microsoft dogma of "Our browser was born perfect" fails to put out.

As such, IE still has 60% market share or so, speculatively because many businesses force their employees to use it, rather than look for better alternatives (also known as the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach).

At least that's my take on it :)

Firefox for the win, definitely!

I prefer firefox to internet explorer, partially because firefox is thought to be safer than IE.

I heard this from my friend: when IE and firefox were attacked with a back-door software, firefox was actually more secure. 77/100 for IE, 84/100 for firefox. Forgot which magazine it was.

I avoided using Firefox for a long time because it had a number of technical issues in the earlier days (e.g. memory leaks), but these days it's pretty much the most solid browser out there, so I use it most of the time. I'm also experimenting with Google Chrome, which is nice, but there's no Linux version yet :(

Before that I used IE6. I like IE6 not in spite of its security holes, but because of them. Years ago, when I was still resisting FF, having a somewhat insecure browser meant I did get the occasional spyware or other violation of my computer's software, but it also trained me to identify and eliminate it. The experience gained me quite a reputation in high school as someone who could fix slow computers, since 99% of the time it was because of some sort of spyware.

I'm a two-timer. IE8 and Chrome. 50-50.

The only problem in IE8 is the time it takes to open a new tab. By comparing both Chrome and IE8, you'll notice the difference. Otherwise, IE8 is GREAT. I'm used to the accelerators in IE8 as they are a great way of saving time...

For more information
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Whether a browser will perform as well on your system or not depends on a lot of factors... So I guess... in a nutshell... it really depends on what you think is faster or better... Go try all the different browsers and decide for yourself which one of them is going to be your default browser... OR you can be a two-timer like me (maybe a three-timer).

I use Firefox due to it's versatility. There are so many add-ons, and my favorites would be NoScript, Fasterfox, Ad-Block Plus and a couple others. With these, FF goes so much faster than Safari on my Mac and I like how clean the layout is (considering I am still using FF2 because I hate FF3's Mac layout).

And IE7+IE8 can burn in hell. I hate those two browsers with a passion.

Firefox has memory leaks. As a matter of fact, it is precisely because of them that I held off from using Firefox for so long. They're not a huge problem most of the time, but like you say, if you keep a browser open for long periods of time (as I am accustomed to doing), the memory starts to eat up.

However, Firefox seems to have done well with doing away with the leaks in recent releases. So far I haven't had many problems, though that doesn't mean they don't exist. All I know is I don't seem to get them anymore, possibly because of my settings, which are very different from the defaults. I also wouldn't notice them if they existed without actually checking the memory usage because I have an abundance of physical memory.

Easy solution is to simply close the browser and reopen it. Or use a different one.

Made the switch to FF from IE around October when IE kept crashing. Then I started using it for this job. The Speed Dial addon is kickass. And I like the skin I have on it. The spell check is cool, as is the speed and functionality. I work in a call center doing web support, and a good majority of things can be fixed simply by switching to FF.

Now when I move to a new computer though, I have no idea what websites I need to have saved. I'm hooked on my speed dial.

Also, the dictionary tool tip addon is geektastic. You can highlight a word, and when you mouse over it, you get a tiny dictionary tool tip telling you the meaning of the word. I love it.

Firefox, other than for accessing Blackboard, which does not seem to support Firefox very well. I use IE...7 I think for that, might be IE6.

Firefox does have some terrible memory problems, though, I'll say that. I have 7 tabs open right now, 4 of which are forum posts and one of which is a purely text based article, and it is consuming 400 MB of memory. This is after having it "on" (I hibernate my computer generally instead of shutting it down) for quite a long time, admittedly, but still, 400+ MB is pretty absurd. Fortunately I have 4 GB of memory so I can afford that kind of thing; I'm only at 60% physical memory use right now, and I have a ridiculous number of other things sitting open (like 13 instances of MS word, for instance).

That is absolutely the point. I use chrome as well, but because it is faster. Also, FF has only one more toolbar than Chrome...

But you can add more to FF and take them away. I haven't figured out how to add any to Chrome except the bookmark one. I like not having a bunch of them.

I'm keeping firefox over chrome for a view reasons. 1) Google STILL hasn't put out a mac version, and 90% of my internet use is on a mac, 2) my addons are <3 and I don't know how many are on/how good they are on chrome.

Firefox all the way.

I read about Google Chrome (in Gmail, of course), but really, do I want to use even more Google products?

Yes, you do. You want to use ALL Google products. Do not attempt to resist (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).

I tried Chrome a few weeks after it came out and was really impressed. However, until it will get better addons I'm sticking to FF. I'm really addicted to mouse gestures. I even try them in windows explorer.

Chrome right now. Never crashed on me, which is, in my humble opinion, always a very positive trait. IE is slow as a cow, Firefox crashes, Safari is too taxing. I still use Firefox on occasion, but it's 90% Chrome. It's clean, it's lightweight, it's intuitive and pretty much organized so that I can find what I need without trouble. I'm a devout Chrome convert, and there's nothing you can say or do to change my mind -whistles- :)

Firefox. Started not to like it since it eats up too much memory. I tried to use Chrome, but it keeps popping out error messages.

I didn't consider the open source process taking place as a reason for it's acclaim, I was mostly basing it off features and such lol. Another perspective I see. I guess to me, all open source should be how you said... so when it happens in that ideal sense, I am not impressed since that should be the norm in the first place.

Opera. Being able to sign into the browser and have everything but cookies downloaded to it is the greatest feature of any web browser ever. It integrates so much of what I se, and I did I mention signing into the browser? Right off of a fresh install and signing in I have everything. Bookmarks, history, speed dial, and sessions if I remember it right.

SRWare IRON.

It's google Chrome, but without the privacy-intrusion (identification) 'features.'

I occasionally use the Torbutton/Firefox package when I have to get around a firewall at school to check my Fling.com account. /jk, but not really! :P

Firefox... as much as I am using the Windows OS (specifically Vista.) I don't particularly like using IE. I'll only use IE if I am forced to to be able to get into a specific website.

I have Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Opera.

Firefox is my #1 browser of choice and has been for the past several years. It's fast, clean, attractive, and full of awesome add-ons. I love it.

Internet Explorer is getting better again. It was great when it first came out, but it got really buggy, slow, and full of spyware in the early 2000s, but the newest version is an improvement.

Google Chrome is very fast and simple, but I don't really find it very appealing to look at. I use it from time to time but not all that often.

I downloaded Opera mostly just so I could try it. It was okay, but there's nothing about it that ever makes me want to use it.

Yeah, I got Firefox, IE, and Chrome also. I admit that Chrome is fast, the look and feel of it is just plain different for my taste though. That is the reason I rather stay with Firefox. Until they can make IE less... annoying (in my terms just invasive with everything you do on the internet.) I won't go to it because I really don't want a pop up screen asking for confirmation for every little detail.

I primarily use Opera. I use Internet Explorer daily as well for its InPrivate browsing feature. I rarely use Firefox.
