View Full Version : Sports... anyone???
So we have a topic on arts... and music...
Does anyone here have a sport they do/play on a regular basis, is good at, or have been in sports teams?
Anyone fairly fanatic about watching sports? If so, which sport?
[hr]
I am currently into fencing which I started a while ago in an interest class... and started yoga this year to temper myself (if you consider yoga a sport). I used to be on the track team and the cross country team. Was involved in badminton for a bit... because I'm asian. :D I would have been in the archery team if the coach didn't leave my highschool. I love basketball, but it's hard to find people to play with who won't TOTALLY PWN me.
In terms of watching sports, the only thing I have the patience for is soccar... or to put it the CORRECT way football *she says with a British accent*

Meh, I only play sport's when and If it is the sport's "test". Mostly it's only baseball (Im good at that).
I get picked for playing baseball but I just say no. Most of the time they help (I call it pressure) to play with them, but like I stand with my word, NO.

I won't generally follow sports games as in barrack for a team the entire year, but I will enjoy watching almost anything if I'm not busy and have time to kill - Rugby League, Union, Soccer, F1, V8 Supercars, Cricket, hell even lawn bowls.
I used to be pretty actively involved in sport but now don't play much as once again the time thing and regular training commitments are too hard to make with my schedule and games are too hard to make it to because of work (nightshift, weekends).

I used to be big into soccer when I was a kid. I played from 4-12. My last year playing, our coach showed the team all about different shin guards... and their weaknesses. More particularly, how to hit them in their weak spots and it make it look like an accident. One game, a kid got 'injured' but the ref ruled that it was an accident. The kid was crying as his team mates helped him limp off the field. The kid on my team came back and was high-fiving our entire team. This is why it was my last year of soccer.*:-/
I could see myself trying fencing, but odds are I probably won't ever. Foosball is a better sport anyways :D And yes, I used the word sport with foosball.
You've got to have a lot of patience to watch soccer. The Simpsons or Family Guy parodied it pretty well with a clip of 2 guys passing the ball back and worth to each other for a whole minute. I will go to the bars with some people from work to watch some hockey though. Long story short: Hockey > Soccer.

How Canadian of you.
Personally i've always hated hockey... bad experiences playing. *Back in elementary school there was one girl who like to use the sticks to hit everyone's knuckles (it was floor hockey, so no gloves). *Ugh... hated hockey every since.
Watchin soccar is better than watching basketball. *The larger field space makes for more opportunity to see some skills. *Basketball, all you see is huge ass guys throwing the ball from one side of the court to the other within 2 passes. *WTH is that!
Worst thing to watch ever... no offence... BASEBALL. *I don't know how people watch that. *More than half the time, all you see is people standing there swinging the bat in empty air, and spitting.
Anyway... I just came back from fencing. I sucked, but it was wicked ;D

I took up tennis as a more fun way to exercise. I don't consider myself very good at it.
I don't watch any sports on tv or as a spectator though.

Hey, being Canadian has nothing to do with the pure ownage that hockey has to offer. It's pure coincidence that everyone in Canada loves it. :D
I have an ISFJ friend who would argue you into the ground with that baseball comment bwahaha. He loves baseball and nascar... and I have no idea why. Me and my INTP friend will make fun of him for it alot, often by making commentary for the crashes that occur. "ATo view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. I should have taken the left turn."
I'm surprised to hear about the fencing and tennis. You guys plan to get good at that I guess? I usually never do anything regularly that I'm either not very good at, or don't plan to get very good at.
I don't love hockey... I'm in Canada. Though it's perfectly legit. to say that I'm a modified Canadian due to outside influences.
Nascar is... okay for a while... Then it gets boring.
Tennis is a good sport... I've just always sucked at it because I tried to play with my dad's raquet... and it didn't work out very well.
As for doing something I'm not very good at. I've stopped doing too many things part way through that I regret. I used to horseback ride, and I miss that now. I use to swim, and I hate that I never got very high leveled. I used to dance, and didn't get very far. I used to skate, but for whatever reason I stopped.
I've figured that I have to get over the big bump in the road created my my stubborness before I'll get good at anything. Plus, fencing is one sport that I don't feel too bad when I fail ;)

I began Judo about a month ago and I bike quite a bit.
I'll also occasionally play soccer, tennis, disc golf, ultimate frisbee, sand volleyball, and croquet.
I'd say my favorite sport to play is soccer.
I don't watch sports on TV unless its the olympics.

I must say ultimate frisbee is actually a pretty good game. *So is volleyball, but I have some really good volleyball player friends, so i feel sadly inferior every time I play, and hence have stopped doing so. *Sand volleyball is just pure torture... esp on sunny days.

I'm a racing fan, specifically Formula 1, MotoGP (the motocycling equivalent of F1), and World Rally. When none of those is on TV then I'll switch to "lesser" formulae (NASCAR, motocross, IndyCar, etc...). I also attend races when I can, usually in the midwest and southeast. I'm also a member of the Detroit Grand Prix Association, and have been volunteering since '83 at the races here in Motown (woo-hoo).
Other sports just don't hold my interest.

I coach baseball. It's easy for me to deal with most of the people involved with it. But the few that I clash with, I tend to loathe their personalities.
The sport itself really lends itself to my NT Rational instincts.

I love playing soccer! I used to play in high school but now I don't have much time for it. I absolutely cannot stand to watch it on TV though, in person is better. I like to watch basketball(college), baseball, football and even nascar(or any racing really) on TV, but when things get boring I just start doing something else around the house, checking up on it every now and then. Oh and I like hockey but I'm just not very good at it. Does ATV riding count as a sport? Because I love to do that too, soo much fun. In fact, its probably my favorite hobby.

I ran cross-country and track in high school (poorly). Never got into any team sports. Gave up running midway through my senior year due to a combination of a stress fracture developing in my right hip and mono.
More recently, I've found myself developing an affinity for some motor sports. It seems my interest is highest when there's discussion of the engineering in addition to the race itself.
I've also been getting my toes wet in the politically incorrect arena of competitive shooting. Started going to IDPA matches last fall and I'm pretty much hooked now. It's good practice for when the zombies rise.
We are both season ticket holders of Leicester Tigers (that's rugby union) and go to most games, home and away.
A home game involves a round trip of about 60 to 70 miles - away trips can be anything up to a couple of hundred miles, I suppose.
The European Cup games this year will take us to Scotland (Edinburgh), Ireland (Dublin) and France (Toulouse), but previous years to Wales and Italy. Flights, and hotels are booked for the Europe games as soon as the match details are released - usually within minutes, and if not certainly later the same day.
We also go to 'A' league games whenever we get the chance - these are players from the club academy, players coming back following injury.
I used to run the independent supporters web-site and still do bits for the site from time to time, mainly picture galleries, sometime just odd and ends to keep the site running.
For the un-initiated - England (the current world champions since 2003) have just knocked Australia out of the world cup... again. there really is nothing better than beating the Aussies ;D (big cheesy grin)

I'm more interested in using the oldschool weapons though...
Nothing like a crossbow to send a specially designed arrow through a zombie head, and rip it's brains out. ;D
*I think it's time to start another thread*
NCAA basketball is the most interesting to me.
Football is the least interesting.
Don't have the patience to sit through most sporting events though.

The only sport I make an effort to watch is gymnastics. I like the combination of athleticism and artistry. It's also one of the few sports I understand, being a former gymnast myself. I also played on the volleyball team in junior high but my impression of the sport was spoiled by a nasty coach.
I'd love to try rowing and snowboarding. Archery and fencing also intrigue me, but my lack of upper body strength and poor eyesight would probably not make me very successful.
I can't watch basketball, car racing or North American football; painfully dull, all three.

i love watching the olympics
as well as motogp (motorcycle racing for those that didn't read rwyatt365's post)

I've gone to hockey games (Flyers) and had a good time..mostly because my best friend is a huge fan. Other than that the Olympics get me off. But not Marion Jones...not anymore anyway. j/k.

I used to to do so much sport when I was a kid: Rugby League (watch and play), Football erm I mean Soccer (damn Americans confusing things ;)), Basketball, Athletics, Ju-Jitsu...I think that's it.
I have very little hand-eye co-ordination though, so tennis was pretty much out of the question (I tried though. Oh how I tried.) Wasn't too bad at cricket and rounders though.
Now I do nothing. I don't have the time or the will to bother. That and I'm so unfit now that I can't do a single press-up. :-[

tennis, tennis, and more tennis....I watch it and play it on my university's varsity team. I really do enjoy it though it does take up a lot of time. I've been playing since I was 4ish and competitively since I was 13ish and seriously since 9ish?
I am also into equestrian sports - ride English (hunter/jumper) whenever I can which is - rarely anymore. because of tennis. And my heavy load of work from school (chemistry major, doesn't make life easy with tennis - kind of makes me wonder if I'm sane haha). I love to watch shows too and just be around horses. I showed one summer.

I play Men's adult hockey and baseball.
I've also coached my adult baseball team for 2 seasons. In baseball I pitched, and played 2nd and 3rd base and in hockey I typically play RW/LW but can also play D if needed.
Both are a lot of fun, and give the NT in me a chance to distract my brain from the fantastical thoughts that run through my head "all the live-long day" at a million miles an hour. That isn't to say I don't use my brain during these sports but it is for more practical and fundamental thoughts. It just feels like auto-pilot and a break from the norm. And exercise is always nice. :)

I'm craving to get back into riding. I never got good enough to show sadly. But being around horses is just fun. I volunteer at the large animal ward at my school and "watch" foals in ICU. It's sad when we lose them, but great watching and helping others get better. I sometimes walk by the barn just for a whiff of the horse and tack smell.

Eyesight and upper body strength definitely required in archery, but not so much fencing.
NA football is actually not too bad to watch. The strategy involved is actually pretty interesting.

Some car racing is incredibly boring – you have to be a "hard core" fan and know the story-behind-the-story in order to appreciate what goes on at the track (NASCAR, most F1 races, IndyCar/IRL, etc…). But some forms of motor racing are inherently interesting and can even be beautiful.
World Rally racing, for instance. Take your average compact to mid-size sedan, double or triple the power, throw in some exotic suspension bits and then turn them loose one at a time on a public road with no speed limits. Oh, by the way, those roads can be asphalt (or "tarmac" in rally-speak), dirt, gravel or show covered and they can (and often do) contain some wicked hairpin turns, gut-wrenching jumps and wheel-removing obstacles (boulders, trees, pot-holes). That's World Rally! The team with the lowest cumulative time wins. To see what these guys do with a car is poetry in motion. Be still my beating heart! *:lovestruck:
My avatar is a picture of what happens when a WRC car hits one of those immovable objects at full speed.
OOops! *:-/ :-[

I was big into playing basketball growing up (even won the Most Coachable Award at the Red Auerbach Basketball Camp) and same with little league baseball (I was bad... that's all I'm saying). I still love shooting hoops to relax and wind down a bit.
I'm very athletic given my frame (5'7", 120 lbs.) and willing to try/play anything. I'm especially good at short distance running (very fast) but my asthma derailed me from trying out for any of the track teams in high school and college.
I also play golf sometimes (My grandmother(!) taught me) and I play tennis with my Dad at local courts often.

I love love love rallying... I don't really keep up with it much, but when I get a chance I watch it. I love to see them going at it full blast, even when their cars have been torn to shreds, or for instance, still going full speed even though the hood has flown up in their face, and they have just a tiny field of vision :D
The only sport I really follow is MMA (mixed martial arts). I've been following it for like 4-5 years now.

As for sports I play, I wrestled a couple years, and I played a couple years of football in highschool. I don't like watching football, but it was fun hitting people (I was a lineman) but I didn't like the whole team aspect of it.. Then my football coach got me into throwing for track and field. That was a lot of fun, and I learned to love a lot of power and olympic weight lifting.
Now the only sport I actively participate in is brazilian jiu jitsu. It's by far the most enjoyable sport I've participated in. It's a lot more fun to choke somebody or armbar them than to just look for a pin like when I wrestled ;D My avatar is of Marcelo Garcia, one of the best BJJ guys in the world.
Still lift weights and do cardio too.

played badminton for 3+ years. Stopped in senior high school after winning third place in my city (1++ mil people) for mixed doubles. We only lost to the first two(barely) because my partner had a physical problem with her leg and couldn't move very quickly. I got really pissed off and stopped playing after that long series of matches. We only got third because I managed to hit the opposite team's girl very very hard with the birdie right smack in the forehead. She fell down on the ground and later had a huge bump on her forehead, so for the rest of the match she wasn't feeling too well and was scared every time I did a smash, which basically made them lose. I am still very proud of that shot. Won us the game and it was perfectly legal, although a lot of people (their supporters mostly) were giving me dirty looks for the rest of the match...

LOVE:
-hockey
-lacrosse
-soccer
-swimming
-water skiing
-tennis
-biking
The hockey, lacrosse, and soccer are awesome because they are fast paced, require a LOT of skill, and relly on tactics much like chess. Tennis could be included with this. My take on biking and swimming is more from a recreational perspective. I kind of like basketball now and again. I love to water ski, but I'm not sure I'd really call it a sport.
HATE:
-baseball
-football
-nascar
-golf
Baseball is way too slow paced. Football has too many interuptions to play (and too many commercial breaks). Driving in circles around a track bores the piss out of me and is environmentally unconscionable! Golf...why would I pay someone to walk across their land and wack a ball - I've played it (quite a bit with my step-dad years ago) and I was pretty damn good at it, but again, it bored the piss out of me.

The only sport I actually played on a regular basis was Tennis, and that was during high school (they needed players to get a full team. So I thought, why not?)
I've actually started watching Baseball a lot more often though. Picking a Baseball team? SF Giants. I sometimes watch basketball, but not always. Football... I just don't like.
I've thought of other sports like martial arts and something like fencing and kendo. As for right now, I can't exactly afford to do them as a hobby just yet. But I would love to when I can.

In high school I played every sport possible, I was asked to join all of the teams( soccer, badminton, volley ball, floor hockey, wrestling, all of them) but I never did, I was more of a P than a J then; and I figured I had better things to do, and I was more focused on my grades anyways...
I really regret it. I wish I took the chance to do all those stuff I didn't want then.
I still try to at least play some soccer with some friends when I get the chance. Rarely do I, but when the guys are playing, I join them : D
I love watching Hockey and Soccer.

I don't really follow sports but I enjoy playing them. I primarly play/coach footie (soccer) both indoors and outdoors. I do martial arts (when I find a school that I like nearby and have the time). I will play just about any sport but I always warm them of my skill level before I start, that way they can't really complain about how bad I suck :p
Watch:
- Football. I'm a total fantasy football addict. It's such a rush. And the sport is a major tease since it's only on one day per week. Crazy addictive.
- Hockey. I grew up in Upper Michigan, where hockey is all that's played. Became an avid Red Wings fan, but always watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs regardless of who is playing whom. Being a hockey fan in the south isn't as much fun as the north (or Canada!!)
- Some NCAA basketball at tourney time if I've got a bracket going
Play:
- Started golf lessons last year. Crazy hard. Still working on my game in a major way. I need to get back to the range.
- Started learning how to waterski last year. Fun!! I should be on the slalom ski this year before too long. Itching for the weather to get back in the 80's so I can get on the lake.
- Kickboxing. More for exercise but it's hella fun.
- Volleyball pickup games.
I would like to pick up a couple more sports for my arsenal. I genuinely enjoy them a lot but didn't really get into them as a kid.

Enjoy Watching
-Tennis. Consistently my favorite sport to watch. The men and the women.
-American football. I got tired of the NFL for about a decade but have recently been following it pretty closely. I’ve always kept up with college football.
-Baseball. I don’t watch nearly as much as I used to and have gotten pretty disgusted with the steroids stuff and the lack of a salary cap (which encourages teams to buy championships). When I bother to watch, though, I can still get engrossed in the game itself. I love baseball statistics and reading about baseball.
-Golf. Mostly the Masters and the British Open. I like windy, wide open Scottish-style golf courses and difficult courses of other types. I enjoy golf less when the winner ends up 19 strokes under par.
-Olympics. Most events, both winter and summer.
-Boxing. This would probably be my favorite sport to watch if it weren’t for the corruption and the negative consequences of being repeatedly tagged in the head. Visually, tactically, and strategically, I think boxing is beautiful, but I almost can’t watch it anymore.
Enjoy Playing
-Tennis. I’m not good, but I am enthusiastic.
-Swimming. Sidestroker.
-The elliptical machine. I know this isn’t generally considered a sport, but it’s a lot of fun because cardio makes me feel like a god.
-Boxing. “Backyard” boxing, mostly in high school with my friends. Exhausting. Sometimes painful. Joyous.
-Hiking/Walking.
-Golf. I rarely play anymore, but I always enjoyed it. I wish it were cheaper and a more convenient.
-Basketball. Pickup games. H-O-R-S-E. I’ll play 21 but would rather play one-on-one, three-on-three, pretty much anything other than 21.

-my parents put me in dance when I was really young, but that didn't last too long
-intramural volleyball when I was younger

-love hiking and generally being outdoors, but more strenuous physical activity is difficult because of the injury. It still acts up sometimes (it's been almost a year), and I may have to look into getting surgery at one point. *sigh*
-just started picking up golf, and am really enjoying it..and love yoga! :nice:
Oh, and as for watching sports, it's always more enjoyable with others, so I'm not much of a follower during regular season, but definitely finals/championships! And second on the Olympics!

I hate watching sports, but playing can be fun. I love water volleyball, and tend to kick ass at it, even when I'm in the deep end and end up submerged in water after jumping up to hit the ball. They always put me where I can't stand, and I still beat them.

I watch Formula 1 regularly, and I love Rally, but the coverage in the US is terrible. Football (real football, not American football) is also good on occasion. I watch various horse riding competitions both live and on television.
As for sports, I ride and train horses, and I also like running. Sadly, I am woefully inept at most sports, so I try to avoid them when possible.

I do kickboxing training. MMA is the only sport that I actively follow. I don't follow rally racing but whenever I see it on TV, I am mesmerised by it.
