Interesting that they include Clavicula Nox on the first part.

Motorhead helped punk become what it eventually was. Discharge, The Exploited, the Amebix... these guys all heard Motorhead and wanted to be Motorhead.

1968 was Iggy and the Stooges, 1974 was the Ramones, and then 1976 was Motorhead.

I disagree that "thrash metal" exists. Thrash (DRI, COC, MDC) isn't metal.

I'd say that Motorhead helped punk further split into subgenres. Within the UK, the bands with heavier sounds turned into crust, UK82, d-beat, those subgenres which you can certainly hear the influence of Motorhead. I don't know if I'm disagreeing with you or not, I just felt like "helped punk become what it eventually was" is too much of an all-inclusive statement.

As for thrash metal, I thought bands like Anthrax and Megadeth and early Metallica were thrash metal? DRI and COC are what many would call crossover thrash, bridging the gap between hardcore and thrash.

Anyways, I was wondering if I could get some music recommendations. I've been getting into both Dethklok and Amon Amarth. I've done some searching but I really haven't found other bands with the same type of sound. Suggestions?

Interesting that they include Clavicula Nox on the first part.

I thought it was a bit strange too. It's a weird song to have as the opener for an album.
The album is the last tribute to the old line-up with the Niemann brothers.

Last week I found out Faith No More are coming to Australia next year for Soundwave festival...and I jizzed in my pants! Also looking forward to seeing Meshuggah, Clutch, Isis and Maximum The Hormone. Some decent bands I think. Also some good non-metal bands in Gallows, Eagles Of Death Metal, Anti-Flag and others.

Anyone listen to Amorphis? I never liked what I heard of them until today. Some of my Viking buddies showed me the new Skyforger album and I f*cking fell in love with it. Sky is Mine is one of the catchiest bloody tunes I've heard in a long time.

Anyone listen to Amorphis?

Inbeeb. I like their old stuff (The Karelian Isthmus up to Elegy) better than what they do now, but their current stuff is still pretty grorious.

Hey guys, add me to the list of fellow metal heads.

Some bands I've been digging lately:

Lunar Aurora
Immolation
My Dying Bride
Mithras
The Chasm
Abramelin
Sigh
Destroyer 666
Kadenzza
Transcending Bizarre?
Dismember
Absu
Gojira
Demilich
The Ruins of Beverast
Aborym

Oh, and a side note I randomnly guessed correctly about Shorgenfunkel profile pic being a Thergothon CD, which is awesome I might add.

The Metal thread had fallen to page 3! What a disgrace!

So who likes Portal (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)? They are an Aussie death metal band. Seeing them play in November. I think they are touring the U.S. next year, including the Maryland Death Fest.

I'm pretty excited for the second half of this year. Unusually good touring here. Over the next 6 months we are getting:
Megadeth/Slayer
Poison The Well
Arch Enemy
Static-X
Obituary
Amon Amarth
Lamb Of God/Shadows Fall/Devildriver
Chimaira
Kreator

EarthBound

add hardcore/metalcore to that list :)

But... that's just to keep this thread limited to (from my point of view) the specific metal genre. Don't let that stop you starting another thread for other genres you might be interested in.

I would very much consider the Waking the Fallen album by A7X to be "real metal," despite their metalcore label. Though I would very much consider everything before and after it a waste of cochlear vibration.

Amon Amarth

Amon Amarth are a whole lot of fun live. I saw them last time they were over here. Not sure if I'll see them this time simply because I'm trying to save cash. But who knows, I might change my mind.

Speaking of buying tickets, I bought a ticket to Sonata Arctica early next year. I haven't really been in to their new stuff, so hopefully they play some classics to keep me entertained.

Mayhem

Marduk

Watain

Burzum

Emperor

Dimmu

Nile

Behemoth

Can't forget Judas Preist

Rob Zombie/White Zombie

Nosvrolok

Nile

Megadeth

Cannibal Corpse

Abazagorath

Gorgoroth (pre split)

Darkthrone

Sumeria & Sothis (although that's due to gross personal bias as my best friends husband sings/sang/vocalizes{d} for both, but there it is)

And even though they may not be technically pure metal in the finest senses of the term depending on how you define the genre, you've gotta give credit where credit is due to:

Guns N Roses

Led Zeppelin

The Cult

and the classical music genre in it's entirety since, I believe anyway, that they're related as far as tallent and whatnot are concerned, and having a sense of harmony among controlled chaos is greatly appreciated in both.

I'm sure I missed a bunch, but I'm going off the top of my head here :)

Some serious heavyweights going on that list.
It took me a number of years of listening to some of the bands you've also listed before there was a time I wanted to find out how the ancestors were and where some of the modern bands drew their inspiration from.

I'm sure I missed a bunch, but I'm going off the top of my head here :)

I had to go through a number of metal subgenres before classical music started to sound interesting, meaningful and loaded with depth which was not found in metal for the most part. Everything is a cycle after all, some are able to get inspired and transform it into something fresh which may not be entirely obvious. The other more common alternative is stagnating and falling into the same repetitive formula over and over.

There are those days where blasting Krisiun or Vader's production from the 1990s are bliss while other days they bore you stiff and cause fatigue and sleepiness after a track or two.

I've been into some metal for a long time. White Zombie, Fear Factory, Sepultura, Cradle of Filth, Acid Bath and the like are old standbys for me.

Recently (in the last year or so) I've gotten into black metal and I wish I'd had the opportunity to do so years ago. Thank god for the internet.

Right now I'm all about:

Behemoth (Just saw them live at the mayhem fest and it was fucking awesome)
Satyricon
Lord Belial
Dimmu Borgir
Burzum
Carpathian Forest
Agalloch (thanks Hacker)
Arch Enemy
Shining
Negura Bunget (courtesy of stasis)
Summoning
Immortal

Can anyone make suggestions based on that list? I'm always happy to find new music. ;D

P.S- Props to your list of the old school stuff. In grade 6 (early 90's) I declared Rob Zombie as my hero for my little "Who is your hero?" project. My parents got a concerned call from the principal. My folks still try to convince me to mail it to Mr. Zombie.

I've never really labeled the music (at least till recently) I listen to as anything but "rock" because I don't listen to the radio and I don't know anyone who listens to the same music as I do. If I hear a song that I like, I plug it into Pandora and then Pandora plays similar music for me. This is pretty much how I have found 90%+ of the music I like in the last 5 years. I have since learned that what I like (a lot from Finland for some reason) is usually referred to as "metal." So here is a list of some of my favorite bands. I think they're metal, so forgive me if I have classified any incorrectly.

Nightwish
Tarja
Angtoria
Dio
Blind Guardian
Within Temptation
Kamelot
Edenbridge
Dark Moor
Sonata Arctica
Excalion
Freedom Call
Masterplan
DragonForce
Edguy

I can make some (of my usual) bm suggestions, though I'm not sure exactly how much they'll line up with your list, I prefer my bm atmospheric, not your standard, in your face, bm.

Thanks! I really like Darkspace and Ruins. Those are two albums I'm definitely buying. Behind them is Urfaust, which I like for a lot of the same reasons I like Burzum. Slightly more ambient.

Half of these bands I can't find outside of Youtube. Raventale is fucking awesome. Ulver and Wolves In the Throne Room are also definitely winners. Many thanks!

Raventale is fucking awesome (especially considering that album is a one man band, home recording job)

If you like Raventale, you'll definitely like Drudkh. Youtube "Furrows of Gods" and "Ukrainian Insurgent Army" from Blood In Our Wells.

As for getting this stuff, assuming you can't find it cheaper anywhere else, you'll definitely find it at The End Records: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I think the best doom works are from Katatonia. First two albums "Dance of December Souls" and "Brave Murder Day" are unique. It is a MUST! And if you liked it don't forget to check October Tide's works.

Talking about Mayhem... The only worth of attention album is "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". As Varg Vikernes said "why listen to anything else, when there's such a black metal piece?". I fully agree.

that's a big list you've got there.

Drunken walrus? :). Back in the day (1992–1993) Atilla was just a normal guy, who wanted to do vocals differently than his departed colleagues did. Later on from 2004 he started to grind shit with his stupid outfits, his vocals wasn't and remain not the same.
But in "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" I think it's something you get used to. Personally, I love it.

Vocals can completely ruin an otherwise awesome band for me. I really like Shining, but don't always dig on the Fozzy Bear vocals. Likewise, though it's not metal, Jello Biafra's vocals do nothing for me and I've never bought a DK album as a result.

The vocals are fucking terrible. Unlike his undead pals, Cashar opts to deal with the dread chill of the north by packing on some pounds and rumbling in an excess of throaty blubber. His performance on De Mysteriis is a visage of lard. Whenever I hear it, I find two yellowish tusks arcing down either side of the microphone.

There's some interesting stuff in this thread and you've convinced me to branch out in my metal listening.

Most of the stuff I listen to now falls somewhere under the umbrella of 'prog' - Obscura, Spiral Architect, Atheist, Blotted Science, Behold...the Arctopus, Cynic, Watchtower, Spastic Ink, etc. Opeth, Strapping Young Lad and Isis are great too.

But after reading this thread I've got a whole bunch of new bands to check out.

Mayhem was born with the addition of Dead and Hellhammer and died when Dead plastered the walls with his brains. I watched recently a live version of freezing moon on youtube with Maniac and the best I could think of was... at least it isn't Attila and those vocals.. The whole performance was uninspired crud.
