View Full Version : Favourite Films?
I just wondered what genre of films (If any) FM's like to watch. I go through stages of 'film binging' and then get to the stage were there is nothing new which is of interest of me, so don't bother for months.
My favourite genre (Or sub genre) is Psychological Thrillers. The last film that I enjoyed being The Butterfly Effect.
So are there any avid film buffs? What Genre do you like best? Do you prefer factual or fictional films? Do you rewatch films?

You think Christianity is deceptive? Wait till you understand how decieving Zeitgeist is. It's a fantastic look at how fear and emotion can suck you in. The creators of Zeitgeist are the masters of Propoganda catered to the (no offense) "pseudointellectual" demograph. Have you taken a look at the "sources" they have (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)? Looks pretty impressive, right? Too bad all of the information essentially comes from a single person. Acharya S a pen name of a better known as "conspiracy theorist" D.M. Murdoc.
The first time I saw this film, I thought it was pretty impressive. It's very well put together except for one problem. It's based upon logical fallacies and false information. I've research all of the claims fairly thoroughly and To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. d=109 presents an extremely good overview of the myth she is intent on pushing onto everyone. Why is it that no scholars take Acharya S seriously? According to Zeitgeist it's all part of the new world order massive conspiracy which has been going on for thousands of years in order to turn all of humanity into microchipped drones so the international world bankers can have what they want. :scared: Oh and only you with your infinite power of love can stop it.
The article I listed is from an apologist site however if you take a look at their references you can double check everything they say. It's put together quite well and is quite objective. It doesn't use emotion in order to convey it's point like Zeitgeist. Zeitgeist is simply another thinly veiled form of propoganda that yet another person is pushing on the "let's hate Catholicism" bandwagon.
Give me a break. Yes, Catholicism has done bad in the past. However, If you take a look at all the good they have done and how they are not engaging in the activities of the middle ages anymore (they too are human) than you would see that the church has actually benefited humanity. Mendel ("father of genetics") and Georges Lemaitre (creator of the big bang theory) were both devout Catholics. One was a monk and the other a priest.
Seems like Zeitgeist enjoys their prejudice and slander. Where's the love there?
These guys are complete charlatans and should be ashamed that they are trying to push their bullshit message of hate on the religions which is based upon a lie. Here's another overview (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts._scholarly_reception). Yes, it's wikipedia, but check the references if you doubt their information. From my research I've found it to be true.
If you want more sources on this. I can provide more. Just ask.
A Beautiful Mind
I just finished watching that for the first time tonight. Very insightful film.
the Shawshank Redemption
Inside Man
There's more... but the list is way too long... maybe I'll list more later.

I tend to prefer sci-fi or slightly weird/off-kilter films.
Some favourites are:
Brazil
Shaun of the Dead
28 Days Later
Although I've recently being getting into foreign films:
Pan's Labyrinth
Oldboy
Belleville Rendez-vous
One film that really took my breath away when I watched it recently was The Hours. I guess it was the whole introvertedness and feeling of alienation that did it.

Oh, and I'm new so um, hi!
I enjoy horror and comedy movies. I used to watch movies multiple times when I was younger, but recently I rarely watch a movie multiple times. It's just boring since I know what's going to happen. My favorite horror movie is Evil Dead 2. It's the perfect combination of slap stick comedy and horror.

I love most psychological thrillers and movies that make you really think and I could properly list quite a few. Instead though I will say, a movie that has really stood out for me in the past 2 years is Blood Diamond.
The simple fact that leo is in it put me off watching for ages but I finally rented it and loved it completely. TIA :)
While I'm here I'll through in training day as well.

If I had to pick right now.
Rushmore.
But, yeah, it changes with mood.
Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, The Muppet Movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Pleasantville, Kill Bills, High Fidelity, Being John Malkovich, Almost Famous, Dead Poet's Society, and Bonnie and Clyde could just as easily have been chosen.

I hate horror as a genre of film. I like lots of other genres.
Star Wars, The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Monty Python, Stand By Me, Airplane...
Shawshank Redemption is definitely number 1. Its one of very few movies that actually put tears in my eyes :-X.
Monty Python's "Search for the holy grail" is also one of my all time favorites.
What I further like :
- Scifi (pretty much everything)
- Comedy
- Some asian flicks (Oldboy, Kung fu Hustle)
And dislike:
- Horror
- And everything else that is predictable

10-14-2007, 01:06 PM
ah yes Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail is great. and yeah - Raiders of the Lost Ark, too.
I liked Pan's Labyrinth but I found it...odd...
other favorites:
Seabiscuit (the book is of course better)
Lord of the Rings
Shrek
Tomb Raider (I was so into the video games - went all the way through 6... then I saved when she was dying once and stopped playing video games for awhile...)
I'm not too picky on the *particular* movie.
some genres I like:
Comedy, action, thriller, stories like seabiscuit (i.e. horse movies haha), some sci-fi.
genres I don't like:
horror.
I don't really care for chick flicks. I'll tolerate them, but 99.99% are predictable (at least that I've watched and I'm not sure if there has been one that hasn't been predictable that I've watched). I'll go out to them with my really girly girl cousin who wants a "girls night out" every once in awhile... (her room's BRIGHT pink! Aaaah! I couldn't do that!)

I liked Thank You For Smoking, The Usual Suspects, and Life of Brian. Thank You For Smoking had an excellent protagonist, and didn't fall into the trap of sudden, utter redemption at the end of the tale like most other movies would. I dislike blatant predicatability in movies, so I don't tend to go for romantic comedies directed towards either sex. Most inspirational movies leave me similarly cold.

I like documentaries, action movies, psychological thrillers, anything Tarantino (pulp fiction is my least favorite, though) war movies, and dark, depressing dramas. I don't care much for most hollywoodish comedies. I abhor cheesy romantic comedies and horror movies. Among my favorites:
Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2
Trainspotting
The Sweet Hereafter
Breaking the Waves
Reservoir Dogs
Mysterious Skin
Sling Blade
Good Will Hunting
Movies that make me want to slit my throat: What the Bleep Do We Know? and The Secret

STRANGELOVE, CITIZEN KANE, MEMENTO, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, AMERICAN BEAUTY, TAXI DRIVER, APOCALYPSE NOW!, LABYRINTH, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, CLERKS, BLOOD DIAMOND, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, LIFE OF BRIAN, GARDEN STATE, DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, RESERVOIR DOGS, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, FORREST GUMP, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, AMADEUS, FARGO, COOL HAND LUKE, CHILDREN OF MEN, OLDBOY, ICHI THE KILLER, THE GREEN MILE, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, THE DEER HUNTER, GLADIATOR, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, DIE HARD, GROUNDHOG DAY, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, TRAINSPOTTING, TWELVE MONKEYS, SNATCH, TERMINATOR 2, BIG FISH, 300, SCARFACE, LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, 28 DAYS LATER, 28 WEEKS LATER, ENDLESS SUMMER, BRAZIL, STRANGER THAN FICTION, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, AMERICAN PSYCHO, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, POINT BREAK, SIN CITY, FANTASIA, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JESUS CHRIST: SUPERSTAR, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, THE BLUES BROTHERS, ALADDIN, VANILLA SKY, CASINO, THE LIFE AQUATIC, ZOOLANDER, OFFICE SPACE, AMERICAN SPLENDOR, SCIENCE OF SLEEP

Any movie that will make me think!!! Documentaries, sometimes the occasional "Thinker's" thriller (I don't know what genre that is, or how to explain it, but if I saw one, I'd point it out.) When I need a break from thinking all day I'll pop in the occasional action movie, even though the whole time I'll be thinking about why the movie makes no sense. If I'm watching comedy, the movie had better be sharp and witty. If its garbage comedy, I'll get turned off quick. If I have to turn my brain OFF to watch a movie, I will instantly hate it.

I completely concur with this post. I love comedy if it isn't garbage, as snoogit said. So, sadly, I don't watch much comedy. A film must engage my thinking or I'm distracted by other thoughts or whatever.

Yes I love that movie and that scene is fantastic *
(For others- in the scene, Jack Nicholson tries to escape from a mental institution by lifting a marble water fountain and smashing it through a window. * In front of several fellow inmates, he failed to lift it.)
:) I think the scene sums up a lot in life- so many people are bystanders, just watching others and their own lives go by. * Only a few actually try and do something, and if they fail, those are the words you feel like shouting at the onlookers.
In fact, the whole movie is like an INTJ trying to break out of a nut house that is the world!

Mmm...
Disturbing Behavior w/Nick Stahl: I love the idea behind it (students get programmed to be perfect achievers in school and go insane when overstimulated sexually...)
The Crow w/Brandon Lee: Revenge seeking while being led by a crow and being immortal? Count me in. And he quoted Poe :P
Batman Returns w/Michelle Pfeiffer: Pfeiffer + Self Created Leather Costume + Christmas = Yummy.
The Fifth Element w/Bruce Willis: All about Milla Jovavich in this one and some fun scenes with Bruce Willis.
American History X w/Edward Norton: Great film. Unfortunately Fairuza Balk's role is somewhat limited but Norton is Godly in this.
The Craft w/Fairuza Balk: Balk + Schoolgirl Look + Witchcraft = Sold.
Reservoir Dogs w/Steve Buscemi: Great characters but I LOVED Tim Roth as Mr. Orange. I'm still pissed I had to "settle" for Mr. Pink's DVD cover of the 10th anniversary edition rather than Mr. Orange's.

Transformers is one of those few movies that I can keep watching over and over again, quite honestly.
Other favorites of mine are: A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, TRON, and others...
I've seen quite a lot of movies, but there are very few that I can keep watching over and over. Right now, I can only think of Forrest Gump and Life is Beautiful. I could mention some of the movies I like merely for aesthetic reasons, but they don't have the same appeal.

Its too bad, I was thinking this was "best movies of all time" but its just "favorite movies"...
Best movies of all time (in no particular order):
Man on Fire
A Clockwork Orange
Hannibal (just got/re-watched this and perhaps I'm biased, but it was so well done...one of those rare sequels that is better than the original)
Fight Club
Beautiful Mind (saw this one show up a lot in this list)
As Good As It Gets
Bill Cosby Himself
Pursuit of Happyness
The Green Mile
Office Space
Godfather Series (well Godfather 3 is pushing best category)
Star Was EP 1 - 6 (yeah yeah Jar Binks blah blah blah)
LOTR SE - this could have finished better...perhaps like the books...would have been nice.
TV Series/Mini-series/MFTM:
Battlestar Galactica, the new series on SciFi.
Band of Brothers
Scrubs (dam roommate hooked me on this dam series).
The Simpsons, all 18 seasons.
Movies I enjoyed just because I'm me (not necessarily Best, no particular order):
The Thirteenth Floor
12 Monkeys
A Good Year
Pi
The Game
Hitch (now some of our secrets are out gents ;O)
Butterfly Effect
Blackhawk Down
The Manchurian Candidate
Catch Me If You Can
8 Mile :o)
Identity
Shawshank Redemption
The Assassination of Richard Nixon ... this was one of those movies that made you feel the protagonist's problems. It was eerily poignant. This may be a best based on that fact, but I only rented it once.
TV Series/Mini-series/MFTM:
Firefly, the series
Pick Up Artist, for all you lonely, unsuccessful nerds out there (ie not me :o).
I am surprised people put 2001: A Space Odyssey. I watched this on AMC recently, and it was so... waste of time. The ending made no friggin sense. Break out the crack pipes, we're watchin 2001: ASO!
DISCLAIMER: This is just a short list. I've seen waay too many movies, and I'm sure there's some out there that should be in this list, but its been so long since I watched (and cared) that they've slipped my mind. By no means is this a complete list of best/favorites. In fact, you can bet on it :o)

This is a great thread... sometimes I don't know what to buy/rent next. Seeing the commonality of movies is cool, too. I actually own a majority of these and see some listed that I definitely want to try.
Sundance films are often a great place to look (they're labeled on the cover by awards). The only other movies I could think of that I didn't see on here are The Astronaut Farmer & The Abyss.

I am partial to very old films so here's my list of favorites:
1. Dodsworth-(1930's) about a woman having a midlife crisis.
2. Baby Face-(1930's) Barbara Stanwyck working her way to the top. ;)
3. I'm No Angel-(1930's) Mae West as a lion/man tamer.
4. Now Voyager-(1940's) My favorite Bette Davis movie.
5. Nothing Sacred-(1930's) I'm a big Carole Lombard fan.
6. Hands Across The Table-(1930's) Another great Carole Lombard film.
7. Possessed-(1930's) Joan Crawford actually made 2 movies with this title. This is the first one.
8. Red-Headed Woman-(1930's) Jean Harlow as an unrepentant homewrecker.
9. The Public Enemy-(1930's) James Cagney is wonderful in this.
10. The Barretts of Wimpole Street-(1930's) Norma Shearer's best film in my opinion.
11. Holiday-(1930's) Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant in a story that's still relevant today. Cary has to decide to live his life for himself or to conform to society's conventions.
That's just a few of the movies I like. Can you tell that I like strong female characters? :)

I thought the effects in Hulkwere not that great. The Hulk looked pretty fake (though I think that had more to do with the too-perfect design than with the quality of the CGI).
RotK and The Curse of the Black Pearl definitely deserved nominations over Hulk. But what was the third nominee?

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World.
Well, I guess Hulk deserved the nomination over Master and Commander (which was a great movie, but the special effects were not that challenging).
The Hulk was an amazing achievement in the day, and I thought he looked great -- this new CG Hulk in the movie coming out this summer, quite honestly, does not look very good at all.
I think that 2003 Hulk could've been done better. He did not look nearly as real as other characters like Gollum. I think this is actually due to his design, though. He was perfectly smooth and uniformly colored all over, with that very bright green...ugh. It made him look way too "perfect" to be real.
I like the new Hulk design a lot better. It looks more like a real Hulk would, with much more detail, like the veins and smaller muscles. I also think his hair adds to the effect, since it is longer and allowed to move naturally, instead of sticking to his head like a helmet. The color is better too, being a slightly darker and more natural-looking green, not fluorescent.
I wonder what the new design will look like when finished. I hope they add a bit more localized color variation, but besides that I cannot think of any improvements. (None of the frames of the Hulk or Abomination in the trailer was completed.)

I guess, but it still made it look unrealistic. It didn't look like some alien metal that reflected light in a unique way; it looked like CGI.

They might have made is too shiny when there was not enough light. It would look wrong if it's glinting but not in strong sunlight. The angles might have been slightly off, too.
I was very impressed with how seamless it all was, but maybe there were some very subtle things that I missed due to all the action going on.

Just watched Donnie Darko. Wow, what a flick. Creative, yet perfectly executed. Skips beats so you actually have to think for yourself. Excellent performances by most of the actors, and I think Patrick Swayze may have played his most authentic role yet. And the Smurf scene - oh my god that's one of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life!
The tone of that movie is pretty much identical to how I feel 90% of the time.

It's difficult for me to just pick out a few, but I'd probably go with
Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetle Juice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Princess Bride, Pan's Labyrinth, The Silence of the Lambs, High Noon, The Maltese Falcon, The Legend of Drunken Master, just about every Disney movie that was (re)released during the late 80s and thru the 90s (nostalgia is pretty powerful - I really got a kick out of those movies as a child. I still like many of them especially The Lion King).
Oh and just about every Pixar movie. I still love them.

A new one for me that I've only seen once is There Will Be Blood. I seem to think about that movie once a day. Other than that, movies just do it for me anymore. For most there's just not enough time for character development, or they'd rather focus on how the CG looks .07% better than it did a year ago. Having said that, I still like the superhero movies, especially the last Batman, and can't wait for The Dark Knight (5 more days).

My all time favourite movie is Spinal Tap, it's so funny, taking what it's like to be part of a rock band to extremes (although I do think there is probably a lot of truth in it).
I'm a huge David Lynch fan, so movies like Bluevelvet, Mulholland Drive.
Other movies I enjoy are 2001 Space Odessey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Clockwork Orange.
Of the recent batch of movies out, I enjoyed Lars and the Real Girl so much I went back to see it a second time - a rare thing for me.

I think I saw one Kurosawa film mentioned but they are all amazing. Toshiro Mifune is the man.
So far my favoites of his are:
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Sanjubo
The Bad Sleep Well
I don't think I saw Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels mentioned yet either, both similar and both amazing.
Frequency is another sweet movie that most people I know haven't seen either.

American Beauty. Lord of the Rings series. Mygirl (1&2), Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Never Been Kissed, Say Anything, Better off Dead, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Emporers Club, speed racer---just kidding! haha, and so many more. those are just a few.
i also liked little miss sunshine, and i want to see charlie bartlett really bad! what about bob haha. nice. oldschool

- Barry Lyndon

- No Country For Old Men
- Okay pretty much everything from Kubrick, Scorsese and the Cohens.
- Star Wars (all of 'em, terrible acting included. Revolutionize the industry

- Planet Earth (BBC Documentary)
- Match Point
- Hurly Burly
- Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Life of Brian, Quest for the Holy Grail
- Beowulf (not that great of a movie but goddamn the action was sweet, I'm
not made of stone here, people)
- Final Fantasy Advent Children (sweet action trumps hyper metro-sexuality)
- Howl's Moving Castle (all the films by that Japanese guy shitting on Disney)
- Harsh Times (Cali residents can relate to the authenticity)
- Almost Famous
- The Godfather Trilogy
- Scarface
- Vanilla Sky
- Waking Life
- Tombstone (Kurt Russell's last serious Oscar contending role. Lol. Val Kilmer's the man)
- There Will Be Blood (very instructive)
- Tideland (a whimsical feel good tale, I suggest you watch it)
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Where the Buffalo Roam
That's all I care to remember for now. And my favorite chick flicks are none of your business.

You have nearly the same taste as me when I was say 16/17. If you like depth of character and real dialogue check out Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's films. Did you like There Will be Blood? Sounds like your favorite movie to me.
I'll look the other way for V for Vendetta hehe. Hard to find high quality revolution type movies. We should work on that. Fight Club is still pretty fantastic though I think.

There's some great stuff listed here. Good taste guys. Noting all these down so I can watch them eventually...
I've recently been watching a slew of films, and haven't watched many films more than once, but those that I do I usually feel I can watch numerous times without getting bored of it. Recently, some of those films would include:
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
The Seventh Seal
In Bruges
Jesus Camp
just off the top of my head, of course. I just got done reading Fear and Loathing (the original novel), and I was pleasantly surprised to see the movie stay quite true the entire way through. Unlike Fight Club which I had read immediately previous; the book and movie were so different from each other that it ended up ruining both for me. :\

I LOVE good movies and I'm not going to repeat all the superb movies all of you already have mentioned. However, there are at least two directors I haven't seen on the list.... Sofia Coppola and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
I like all movies Sofia Coppola has done so far and you can easily see that she thinks in the same way as her father. What I especially like with her is her ability to tell a story with a very limited amount of dialogue. Look at Lost in Translation, which is a masterpiece in my eyes. A very introverted movie, not very much of a dialogue, but you still get the point in a very nice way.
The French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is the hottest name here in Europe now if you ask me. I don't know if he is a well-known name in US or not but definitely a director to look up if you haven't heard of him. Delicatessen, A very long engagement, City of lost children are all good movies but the ONE to see for all us INTJ is Amelie. The character Amelie is an INFJ girl, true, but the way she thinks is so similar to how I see the world on a daily basis. How anyone can catch a character so well on the screen is amazing!
Pan's labyrinth is also a very decent one!
Enjoy!

For some reason most of my favourite "comfort" movies are romantic "costume" dramas. What does that say??
Persuasion (the Ciaran Hinds one)
Jane Eyre (also with Ciaran Hinds)
Rebecca (Charles Dance)
Pride and Prejudice (the 1985 BCC one)
Maurice
Daniel Deronda
Crossing Delancey
Lost in Translation
G.I. Jane
That last one is not a typo. I like a girl who kicks butt. ;D

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Best line- "But I tried, didn't I? Goddamn it. At least I did that."
Oh no, the best line is "Mmm, Juicy Fruit.":-)
I've recently enjoyed for example Im Juli, Elementarteilchen (yeah, wanted to improve my German a bit:-)), Juno or Persepolis. Oh, and Dr. Horrible:-).
And from the well-known I like Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction, One flew...Or Big fish and Interstate 60. Or Hair.
I hate romatic comedies:yuck:. I even hated Pretty Woman and Love Actually so much even though they're well-recognized movies enjoyed by most (I think). I guess the only movie labeled both "romance" and "comedy" is In July, I love that movie.
I also hate horrors or scary thrillers. With my vivid imagination and fearful nature I really don't need any other stimulation in that area. I'm pretty well off with my own scary fantasies. Watching one horror movie gives me nightmares for a few years and some "nice moments" stay forever, improving my own creepy thoughts. Watching Jack the Ripper at the age of about 12 - not a good idea. Watching a movie with an evil Japanese woman, scary nursery rhyme and a cooling fan - not a good idea. Putting pieces of mirror in dead people's eyes - yeah. But I like Twin Peaks, though some of its moments scare me to death.

Ooooh. I've seen it. Good stuff. Very interesting & thought provoking. Tried to get my friends to watch it (I live in the bible belt & all my friends are religious). Of course they won't. If it is in any way blasphemous to their god, they will have no part in it. I talked one friend into going to see Religulous with me & he got up & walked out. It's so hard to be friends with close-minded people...
dalidaisy added to this post, 3 minutes and 10 seconds later...
Just ask.
It's entertainment. It makes you think. You don't have to believe it. Just like I don't believe that silly story from Titanic. But, I'll watch the movie & enjoy it...

Terminator trilogy (I liked 3 so :P) and I cannot wait for the new one to come out!
I didn't hate the third one, but I didn't love it either. The problem is that I read the book that the movie is based on and, of course, the book was much better. I only saw a very brief preview for the fourth movie in the Terminator series, but it looked really cool. Very rarely do I see a movie in the theater but for this one I might splurge for a couple IMAX tickets.

I am a film buff. When watching a film I'm aware of much more of the construction than most people. Films with an unusual construction attract me, could be any genre. I watch films I like multiple times so I can analyze them more deeply.
Ten standout films in style and content:
2001: A Space Odyssey [I recognized the expressive power of cinema through this film]
Raging Bull
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Annie Hall

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Psycho
