Yep. You know my feelings on Leonard Cohen. But he was well and truly surpassed here, by someone who could make a beautiful song even more beautiful than he could. (And the Cash version of Hurt ain't so bad, either.)

Reminds me of something off of Sarah Brightman's La Luna disc. The composition is very smooth and I'm fond of the slight Asian twist thrown into the mix. Origa doesn't seem well matched with the music, though. She sounds a bit uninspired.

Mine too; the guy's got talent.
I'm loving this thread; I'd never even heard of Ludovico Einaudi, but I've liked every tune I've listened to (and there's been a few), I'll have his latest album shortly :)
I think it's a matter of time before someone posts a really beautiful tune that I've been searching for over the years; I last heard it in a pub around 4 years ago, and when I asked the landlord what it was called, I think he told me it was by Mike Oldfield (and no it's definitely not tubular bells - although it may be from a film's soundtrack.) It's kind of twinkly, oriental (I always think of cherry blossoms falling), slightly melancholic, and totally gorgeous :)

That was the other candidate for my prior post!:) I agree about the tail end of the track. I'm really not fond of the drastic shift of the flow of the track with all of those acid-techno type sounds drowning out the more rhythmic components of the song.
Another Squarepusher track that I find striking is Ultravisitor (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). From about 3:37 on is some very stunning work.

There's a clip on youtube where he shows off all the equipment he uses in his home studio (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). Be sure to watch the Escaflowne film when you check it out, the television series ... not so much (though I think one of the songs might have been from it). If there's one Knife song that's epic and beautiful, it's the live version of Marble House : To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
(that Royksopp song is from their album btw, not Fever Ray's - and the best collaboration they did has to be What Else Is There - the Trentemoller remix (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) is amazing!)
Oh, and The Knife have just released their opera Tomorrow in a Year, which is about Darwin - it has this rather lovely piece as its lead single (if you can call it that?!): the Colouring of Pigeons (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. Even people who do not like classical will probably appreciate this. It is not background music though; it's something that needs to be truly listened to.
"...Having discharged so much energy and outcry in the first two movements, Beethoven is now ready for mediation and meditation, His Adagio molto e cantabile is not only among the greatest of slow movements ever written but it is a masterly evocation of musical design unlike anything ever attempted previously. The move...ment is in the key of F, the relative major of D minor, which fulfills the customary proprieties, but nothing else of it is customary. In a poised succession of unimaginably beautiful melodic statements, the premise eventually emerges as two balanced thoughts, of which one is altered and the other is varied..." (IRVING KOLODIN)

I don't know anything about computers (just youtube them), but I know good music.
* John Barry's theme for "Out of Africa". It's epic and gorgeous because of the restraint he showed in composing it. That one always sends me to another place when I listen to it. What an achievement for Barry. Thank God he won the Oscar for it.
* Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". 'Kick ass' is putting it mildly. Just listen to it with awe.
* "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss. Probably the last word in EPIC. I wish I wrote that song.
* Someone mentioned Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald". I second that. Also his "If You Could Read My Mind". That one always chokes me up. I just love him.
* Richard Wagner's "Die Walkure (The Ride of the Valkyries). Just slightly epic.
* Maurice Jarre's theme for "Lawrence of Arabia". That's a really legendary one.
* "The Old Ways" on Lorena McKennitt's first album "The Visit". I don't like the live in Paris version nearly as much. This recorded version is definitely epic and absolutely beautiful. It stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it.

Yeah, classical is really nice. :)
But metal is at the top of my list. Nothing beats the comforting, refined sound of double bass and the awesomeness of guitar/billions of other instruments combined into an intricate web of goodness singing into your soul.

Agalloch and Kalmah are great!
Well, I haven't really gotten into the black metal scene very much, but there are a couple bands I like.
Have you heard of Catamenia (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)? They're more melodic than usual black metal, but insanely awesome.
Another band who I recently found to be quite good is Antestor (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). Although, they're "ublack metal", which is basically replacing Satan with Jesus in the lyrics. Or Christian black metal. They're actually quite impressive. :)
And I have no clue when Time is coming out. Probably on December 21st, 2012, Jari will come out of his studio with the album in hand and say, "Hey, guys! Guess what, I finished--oh..."
I really wish he could at least give us some samples to listen to...or at least let us know he's still alive. xD

Thanks for the Catamenia link. That song was pretty good. Speaking of Jari, this was pretty funny, concerning his reasons for cancelling their upcoming tour:
"There has come again unexpected problems with technology, which will make finishing the "Time" album even more harder than it has been. Which will delay it even more. There´s also some personal problems concerning my apartment".
