In your opinion, is there a difference between rap and hip-hop? If so, what is the difference? If not, why?

Rap is a form of music. Hip Hop is more encompassing and includes lifestyle, culture and fashion.

Rap can be a noun or verb. Hip Hop is always a noun.

To help clarify meanlittlechimp's point, breakdancing is hip-hop, but it's not rap.

Blondie's song "Rapture" is rap, but it's not really hip-hop. (It's also not any good (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), hehe.)

What? Of course there is! You'd only ask this question if you didn't listen to either. It's like asking is there a difference between North and South America. Sure, the line gets blurry sometimes, but they're are different things.

Rap is more lyrical heavy. See Snoop Dog, Kanye, Eminem. Hip-hop is more dancy. See Missy, Timbaland, Kanye again... Songs can have elements of both rap and hip-hop, but they're two distinct things.

You can have a tight rap if you remove the beat to a song, but if you remove the words, it's nothing. You can still have a hot hip-hop track if you remove the words, but once you remove the beat, it's nothing.

I am an avid listener of both. I agree with you to a certain extent: if you reversed the definitions I would agree 100%. Personally, I like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Black Thought, Asheru, to list a few. And of course a few main stream, Jay Z and Kanye West come to mind. I asked just to see what everyone else's opinion might be.
