View Full Version : Which is your dominant hand?
Just popped up in my head...
I'm ambidexterous, but I use mostly my right... unless I got bored that day, then I'll pick up the pen with my left.
I was told that I used to fill in colouring books with both hands at the same time. :o

my old school east european parents strongly encouraged using the right hand and strongly discouraged the left
superstitions die hard
My grandmother beat me for using my left hand and forced me to use my right. I'm naturally left-handed but have such a deep psychological aversion to using my left hand that I can't use it if my right hand isn't occupied. I don't write with it, but I write fairly well with it, considering absolutely no practice.

Yeah my school tried to make me stop using my left. *Maybe that's why I did, but my mother says it was my choice b/c she never tried to convince me either way.

It's easier to tell if you had your right handed writing too.
Actually I wonder how well you have to write with your other hand to be considered truely ambidexterous. I can do it fairly fast and it's pretty legible... because my right-handed writing sucks too so

wolf pretty good...no smudges
I have cross-dominant mixed-handedness. I use my right hand for some things (writing, drawing) and my left for others. It's pretty common.
I tried the writing thing, and it was so much more natural to write s backwards.
wolf pretty good...no smudges
That's just because I'm a pusher... I'll try it underhand.
Edit: Oh yes, I'm ambi with firearms, possibly slightly better with my left when using a rifle.

Here's the same thing written with my right hand:
Here's my stuff for comparison.

You clearly have a right-preference, but pretty good.
My underhand writing is terrible.
I was tyring to be neat.
The surrounding writing in pencil is my speedy note-taking writing *::)

Sometimes I do better at bowling left handed, but other than that I'm a righty. My feet are ambidextrous though, which was a good asset for soccer.

What the hell? Families beating children for using their left hand? Why????
I'm right-handed. When I write with my left hand it's legible, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't make me ambidextrous.

My grandmother was oldschool, from back when being left handed was like being evil or handicapped or something. All but one of her kids were naturally left-handed and she forced them through physical punishment to use their right hands exclusively, including my aunt, father, and two uncles. My aunt trained herself later in life and as a school teacher she would write across the chalkboard switching hands in the middle. Since they lived on the same street one house over and watched me often, she did the same thing with me that she did with her children. My siblings are all right-handed, though. I remember being smacked with rulers and spanked for using my left hand, and it was sufficient to lead to a psychological aversion to using my left hand. Notice how shaky I am when using it...

Clearly right handed. My writing with my left hand is very shaky.
Wholly...
that is really amazingly neat writing :suspicious:
I know this is very pop-psyc... but I wonder if there's a trend in handwriting in INTJ's

I'm naturally right-handed but in 6th grade I broke my right wrist during PE and was forced to write with my left had for 6 weeks. Ever since then I consider myself to be adequately ambidextrous but my right hand takes dominance over most daily tasks.

My handwriting isn't noticeably worse when I write with my left hand, but my handwriting is illegible anyway. ;D At least, my teachers can't read it once I write more than a line. I can only draw with my right hand though. If anyone wants to see my drawings for any odd reason go to celesul.deviantart.com. I'm not a comment addict... I swear... :shhh:
I don't need write with my left hand to know it's sloppy.
I wear my watch on my left, makes sense while you're writing, you don't need to stop writing to look at your right wrist for the time

One of my friends have argues the exact opposite.
He wears his watch on this right hand and says that way he doesn't have to pick up his other hand to read the watch. :suspicious:

He would still have to stop writing to look at it,.... unless the watch face is positioned under the right wrist so you can see it the whole time...going left is better for me.
When I wore it on my right, the strap annoyed my wrist while I was writing, when it's applicable, I can read time, and write at the same time, so why not!

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But come to think of it, he has a habit of taking his watch off and setting it on his desk before any testing/examinations. So I'm guess it was just a habit, and he just wouldn't admit it.
My sister also wears her watch on her right wrist. (she also 'borrowed' my watch without permission, and scratched it because she wears watches on her right wrist.) >:(
I can't understand how they do it. I usually hate wearing anything on my right hand, and on my left for that matter, but my right is worse. I can't even wear bracelets when I go 'shopping' because when I browse through clothes and such, I feel it dangling and getting caught on things. It's just a huge bother. :(

Pretty much completely left-handed. However in baseball I catch and throw left-handed and bat right handed.

So you need to remove the glove to throw the ball :o, or do you catch with your right hand?
I catch with my left and throw with my right,...What field position do you favor left or right?, I like left...Center field sucks, less action.

Guess I should have clarified that...I catch with the right and throw with the left.
I prefer right field when I play.

I'm a righty.
I have neat right-handed, sloppier that's an attempt at neat and is pretty legible- add a bit of cursive in there (ie connect a few letters), sloppier that's just less legible, even sloppier than that, neat cursive, and sloppy cursive haha. Oh, I can write upside down pretty well with my right hand. If that counts for anything haha.
My left handed is pretty bad. Actually I think my lefty upside down is better than my lefty right side up. However, not by too much.

I'm right-handed. It takes a great deal of concentration to make my left hand go where I want when writing.
My Nana is left-handed and like some other people here, her teacher tried to make her write with her right=hand. Apparently left-handedness is the mark of the devil or some other such stupidity. So, when my Mum was born left-handed too, she encouraged her to use her left hand for fear that teachers would pick on her too. My Mum is now pretty much right-handed, although she holds her knife and fork in the "wrong" hands. Even though I was born right-handed, I too hold my knife and fork in the "wrong" hands, but that's mostly because it makes more sense for me to have more maneuverability with the fork than the knife.
Anyway, here's a sample of my handwriting. I think it's funny that everyone has decided to write the same thing. On that note:

and yes, my right-handed handwriting is horrible. it can be neater, but that's my note-taking handwriting. which is considerably sloppier.

as for my handed ness I do certain things with the left, some with the right, and others with both alternating at different times.

Most left-handed as well. I think I do more intellectual/precise things with my left hand (writing, eating,...) and more physical things with my right hand (throwing a ball, bowling,...). I do try to keep my muscles pretty balanced none-the-less, so my right and left arms are pretty even and might actually be better (obviously...?) at some precise muscles than the other.

Write left-handed, throw a ball and do sporty things like box right handed.
I was equal dominate in both as a child but my kindergarten teacher told me I had to choose one and stick with it - Because everyone else was right handed I chose left.
Though I have much more dexterity in my left hand thanks to years of typing and playing violin.

I write lefty
I shoot rifles and pool lefty
I throw righty, shoot a pistol lefty, swordwork is righty as is fighting. I'm left eye dominant but my right arm is stronger.
I'm ambi, really, it's just that I prefer those hands. I used to switch up and it used to piss off my shooting and hand to hand instructors.

I do everything right-handed, but my left eye is dominant. My grandpa tried to teach me to shoot lefty to fix the inherent problems with left-eyed, right-handed shooting, but I couldn't. So i just strengthened my right eye.

Lefty. For everything.
My dominant hand is my left. I was born this way. However since all the people around me when I was growing up were right handed, I learned to use my right hand very well. So I sorta trained myself to be ambidextrous.

It's a Catholic thing. In strong Catholic societies, everything that has to do with the "left" is bad. You can see why if you translate "left" into Latin; than it becomes "Sinister". Also, anti-christian or pre-christian (European) philosophy's/religions are called "The Left-hand Path", while the the Christian philosophy is called "The Right-hand Path".
Also, when we look at the various meaning of the word "right" we can see that right-handed people were prefered in Europe. In many European languages "right" ("rechts" in Dutch and German, "Droit" in French) has multiple meanings, including many meaning which have to do with "justice". In English I can show you this by looking at the following sentence "I have the RIGHT to speak freely". In this sentence "right" means something "good".
All this is why some people, esspeccialy elderly people, discourage Left-handed writing....
I'm btw strongly left-handed.

Right-handed no question. My handwriting is pretty illegible, but that's only because I write fast, and that's only because I'm impatient and that I can't get my thoughts on the page as quick as I'd like. I much, much prefer typing (I'm not a perfect touch-typist but I do pretty well).
Oh, and I can wear my watch on either hand. :P

i am ambidextrous but primarily left handed. i can write with both hands, but the right requires a little more effort. i can also write upside down, backwards (mirror) or both, in print or cursive, at the same speed as regular writing. I can also mimic other people's handwriting styles. my own style changes depending on how I'm feeling at the time.

I'm almost 100% right handed.
There are situations in wich I prefer using my left hand, such as holding my sandwich, but I'm pretty sure that has got more to do with the fact that I want my right hand free for more important matters then that I might be ambidexterous.

So that's why Entombed named their first record that!
Anyway, I am so surprised that other people were told/forced to use their right hand if they were naturally lefty - my grandma did the same to me. I'm sure if I thought about it, I could think of something I do better left-handed, but here's a random example.
I was playing cards on Saturday night, and I deal with my left hand. It has never occurred to me that it's weird, but apparently a righty should deal righty.

I'm left-handed. However, like some others, I grew up around mainly righties. I found it much easier to adapt to right-handedness for certain activities than to have some fool right-hander trying to teach me left-handed (few are good at that). Therefore, I do the important things left-handed, but fight (martial artist) and play sports mostly right-handed (this is great when playing Ultimate Frisbee).

this may sound silly but since we are talking about emotions, behaviors, mental states ect.. is the side of the brain that we think from linked to our personality traits. i am an INTJ- atleast that is what a test told me that i was- so i guess what i am trying to get at is i am also left handed is this common for this personality trait.

Not particularly. Dominance can be trained over time, so it is not something intrinsically unchangeable by will alone unlike physical features nor related to thought in this limited sense.

Yeah, I was totally ambidextrous until mid-grade school when I had an encounter with a teacher, handwriting drill, and a straight ruler. Oh, and the gym teacher didn't help much either.
Since them I'm a righty, but I've found it very easy to play left hand on keyboards and so forth, whereas a lot of pianists have a tough time with that, especially in the first years of learning.

I'm right-handed. I want to be ambidextrous, but all my attempts with my left hand resulted in hardly legible and out-of-place writing. On the piano, I'm surprising better with my left hand.
