Your favourite type of art is Impressionism.
In the personality profile you had a high intellectualism score, which suggests you like to think about abstract ideas and have a creative imagination.
People who are the same age and sex as you are most likely to prefer Impressionism
People who also score highly in your dominant personality trait are most likely to prefer Impressionism
Low extraversion
People with low extraversion scores tend to be happier with their own company. They may have a small number of close friends rather than a wide circle of acquaintances. Less keen on going to wild parties and meeting people, they are more able to make their own entertainment and don’t seek as much external stimulation.
Average agreeableness
People with average agreeableness scores tend not to be as keen to understand other people's feelings as people with high agreeableness scores. But they are also more likely to seek a compromise or avoid offending others than people with low agreeableness scores. They are somewhere in between. They can engage positively with others and put people at their ease, but they may be more likely to speak their mind, even at the risk of offending someone.
High conscientiousness
People with high conscientiousness scores like to do things properly. When they say they'll do something, they do it. They have a keen attention to detail and like things to be ordered and in their place. They like organisation and are prepared for every eventuality. They have a strong sense of responsibility.
High emotional stability
People with high emotional stability scores tend to have a fairly constant experience of life. Although they have ups and downs, they rarely suffer from an 'emotional rollercoaster' of rapid mood swings. They take life in their stride and are unflappable. They are more relaxed, slow to take offence and don't worry too much about little things.
High intellectualism
People with high intellectualism scores are interested the abstract. They like thinking about things they can't see and have creative imaginations, able to dream up whole new worlds. They like to feel they understand things and will probe deeply into a subject to get as good an insight as possible.
Average emotional intelligence
People with average emotional intelligence scores have a reasonably good emotional insight, but are only human. They believe they are relatively good at empathising with other people, though like anyone else they can occasionally get it wrong. Average scorers tend to see themselves as fairly well balanced, with some insight into their emotional make-up. They are pretty good at interacting with others and use their emotional insight to try to understand other people as well as they can.
Although I think the art itself was a bit skewed...as some paintings looked like they only revealed a portion, rather than the whole painting (which, IMHO, is bad form for an art quiz).

Impressionism also.
I hypothesize that N's are more likely to appreciate Impressionism than S's, due to the more abstract nature of our thought proccesses.

Yep. Seeing the pictures at the results, I definitely like Impressionism better than Abstract art.
-People who prefer abstract art tend to be more conservative, dogmatic, and are often sensation seekers.
-People who are open to new experiences are less likely to enjoy looking at realistic paintings. They seek something more atypical and challenging.
-People with low emotional stability tend to prefer abstract and pop-art paintings.
-People who score high in agreeableness like paintings and tend to dislike forms like pop-art.
-People who like representational paintings may also be more conscientious than average.
Ugh. I don't think I'm anything like this.

A decided preference for Impressionism, which is right. It didn't show up, but my second highest preference was for Renaissance art. I know that I loathe modern art of the squares and triangles variety, but I don't mind some of them providing they depict a dog or a person or some other recognizable image, albeit in a strange fashion. I love Van Gogh too.

I got Northern Renaissance--like Merle, I could have predicted that. Except for all of the eastern art and some of the abstract art, I could identify all of the paintings (or at least the artists) from the bits they showed during the quiz. So sometimes I was selecting for or against a particular work or a particular artist's body of work based on what I already knew and not the sample in front of me. I wonder if that skewed my results? Others of my age and sex and sharing my dominant personality trait (intellectualism) preferred, yup, Impressionism.
Of the styles of art we picked for the experiment, your answers suggest you like Impressionism.

Impressionist paintings often appear on mugs, calendars and posters. However, they weren't always so socially acceptable. Impressionist painters were initially criticized for attempting to capture the fleeting effects of light and colour found in nature.
Using daubs of pure colour, they painted landscapes, sunlight reflecting on water and flowers and rejected the traditional subjects and darker colours advocated by their teachers.
Claude Monet founded Impressionism in Paris during the 1870s and painted for more than 60 years. One of his works, 'Impression: Sunrise,' gave the style its name.
Monet once said: "For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment... It is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value."

ukiyo-e and high intellectualism..
(Art history student with prior experience/knowledge.)
I certainly don't prefer impressionism. My tastes are rather dynamic and currently focused on Japanese prints, mr. Malevich's super suprematist stuff (which is on display in Amsterdam now!), neoclassical stuff like David, Ingres and Poussin, 19th century realism like Courbet and the Prerafaelites and random crazy shit like Blake, Turner and El Greco. A lot of that does hover around the 19th century, so the test isn't not entirely off.

I'll have to protest that the impressionism pics they put in the test is not good enough. I saw one in Japan (a portrait, oil painting of a Japanese scientist) and I was simply awed and I lost all of my words. The pic in the test lack the contrast I found in abstract pics.

Abstract for me.
Abstract art often leaves people asking: "Is this art?" And that's precisely the reaction many artists want to provoke.
In its purest form, abstract art doesn't show recognisable objects or figures. The artist represents his inner thoughts and feelings with shapes, lines, colours and tones.
Abstract art originates in the 19th century. Some say it is a response to the invention of photography, which freed artists from their traditional role as portrayers of reality.
The rapid changes in society affected many artists in the early 1900s. The abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky once wrote: "When religion, science and morality are shaken ... then man's gaze turns away from the external towards himself."
Personality part :
Low extraversion
People with low extraversion scores tend to be happier with their own company. They may have a small number of close friends rather than a wide circle of acquaintances. Less keen on going to wild parties and meeting people, they are more able to make their own entertainment and don’t seek as much external stimulation.
Low agreeableness
People with low agreeableness scores are often fairly uncompromising. They refuse to be sentimental about other people and won't tolerate fools gladly. These people speak their mind and aren't afraid of offending people with their straight talking.
Average conscientiousness
People with average conscientiousness scores have a sense of responsibility and like to get the job done. However, they might concentrate more on the big picture and less on the details than people with high conscientiousness scores.
Low emotional stability
People with low emotional stability scores have a very varied emotional life. They often have a lot of nervous energy, which can motivate them to do things. They have a strong emotional response to events and can't always predict how they're going to react, but whatever the reaction their life has a powerful emotional intensity.

I think they picked some of the worst paintings for this experiment. I can think of slews of painting that would've been far better for their categories (with the exception of Islamic) in this test. As I found the majority of paintings to be rather dull and boring.
If you don't get Impressionism (for the takers obviously), I doubt you are of this personality.

I had some issues with the test too. Mainly, I just didn't like the art it was showing me, but I scored the artist high because I knew who they were and what their body of work was. Also, as someone else said we only got to see part of the work instead of the whole thing. To add to that we are looking at it on the computer instead of irl, which makes a difference.
Overall, it's an interesting idea, but I think they should work on their test method.

- I have to agree here that I find the test somewhat flawed. I know that the four paintings that I scored the highest for liking were evenly split between Northern Renaissance and Impressionism. My personal taste does not exclude the possibility of liking almost any kind of art. My actual preferences are for Pre-Raphaelite, Baroque, Surreal, Gothic, and Fantasy. In my opinion there could be a much better attempt at this study that included both better examples of the movements and more genres. It should probably also show a range of interest rather than suggesting a strict result.

I feel a lot like this lady at the moment.
1. Northern Renaissance
2. Japanese (and art nouveau)
3. Cubism / Islamic Art
4. Impressionism
5. Abstract (these particular pictures)
I'm fine with everything. Abstract art is exceedingly varied and may be appealing as well. Because of this, impressionism would be my least favourite style as a whole in this selection. I'm not certain what's so intellectual about it in comparison to everything else.
Average everything, high emotional intelligence and intellectualism.

If you don't get Impressionism (for the takers obviously), I doubt you are of this personality.
The impressionism pics in this tests aren't the good ones. You'd better take this into account before making this conclusion.

Your favourite type of art is Northern Renaissance.
Average extraversion
People with average extraversion scores tend not to crave the company of others quite as much as people with high extraversion scores. But they also don't necessarily feel happiest on their own like people with low extraversion scores. They are somewhere in between. Sometimes they enjoy the stimulation of events like parties, but they are also more able to make their own entertainment.
Average emotional stability
People with average emotional stability scores are more likely to have mood swings than people with high emotional stability scores. But they tend to have a less varied emotional life than people with low emotional stability scores. They are somewhere in between. They can be fairly relaxed and predictable, but may occasionally have strong emotional reactions to events.
High intellectualism
People with high intellectualism scores are interested the abstract. They like thinking about things they can't see and have creative imaginations, able to dream up whole new worlds. They like to feel they understand things and will probe deeply into a subject to get as good an insight as possible.
High emotional intelligence
People with high emotional intelligence scores see themselves as emotionally well balanced. They believe they are good at empathising with other people and have a good insight into their own emotional needs, drives and reactions. High scorers see themselves as well balanced and largely in control of their own emotions. They also tend to feel confident in interacting with people and believe they are able to connect with and influence others by using their emotional understanding.

Interesting. Overall, the painting that scored the highest in their experiment was one of my least favorites (although it's clear the artist who created it has technical skill). The painting which scored lowest was one of the more interesting imo. And I went to art school for 4 years. Proves how subjective art is...
