View Full Version : Extreme creativity before sleep

Last night, I had the weirdest thing happen to me. I was still half-awake but also half dreaming. I dreamt that I was a pianist and this really nice song started playing in my head with violin accompanying it. I was controlling the melody while it played. It sounded so nice, it was almost like a masterpiece. The worse part is that I have no training in music so I have no idea what the notes are or how to reproduce it. Then after that I was having a nightmare about an integral which I couldn't solve (I found out after I woke up that it was not integrable...).
Does anyone else here subconsciously compose or play music before they sleep? Do you get any weird creative experiences right before sleep? I wonder if this is how artists and other highly creative people form their ideas...

Yes, all the time. I'm mostly a guitar player, but I always have these insanely beautiful melodies running through my mind, and if only I knew exactly which notes they were, it'd be amazing. Usually I just hum them for fun.

I often reach this half-sleep, half-waking state. Especially when I nap during the day. It's one of my favorite experiences. I really just love the random interconnections that are made. It feels like a lot of it is out of your control, although I can typically control the general direction my mind takes.
I've often had epiphanies, or ideas come out of this state, but nothing musical.

I get a lot of ideas when I'm trying to sleep, and that can be a really big problem at times, since my mind wont relax. But some ideas are really creative. I guess it comes when you have no external stimuli to focus on at all, even for an INTJ that means a lot of extra introversion. So the mind starts spinning on every thread available.

I get a huge amount of ideas in that half-awake/half-asleep zone. Gone by morning, though.

Dreaming about music often indicates a realization that you are having that you are finding difficult to define......the fact that you are playing the music means that you are expressing your essential self.

I love the half awake- half asleep state. I like to powernap in the afternoon and if I hit that state 5 minutes feels like an hour. I'll jump out of bed thinking I'm late for work or w/e and see I have a few minutes until the alarm goes off. Happened to me less than an hour ago.
OTOH getting to sleep is difficult at times as my mind will just run no matter what. I didn't have this problem much recently but I've recently realized that I just didn't feel like me, and now its back again. Oh well back to meditating, etc to fall asleep.

One night, for a strange reason, I contemplated how a ship floated, and in that time period, I understood how and why a ship floats and how it balances on the water.
I asked my brother about this, who was in the navy, and he confirmed it, though he looked at me like i was an idiot for not knowing it :)
Another time I contemplated a specific system, can not remember what it was, but i described it to a friend of mine and he named the system i was describing and i was very accurate with it. Though i never read nor heard about the said system prior to it.

The state that you are describing is called alpha wave or alpha rhythm. Happens in the transition from awake to sleep states and vice versa. I have read that it is considered meditative state. and it is very creative. Have seen pictures, but never music. Will try tonight. Thanks

I'm sure most people are prone to weird dreams. As for me I have no musical skill at all too, and sometimes there can be random music in my head that won't get out.
haha integral
was it e^(x^2 )?

Uggghh! This has happened to me, too, only once in a dream. Really a loss not to be able to reproduce that.

It's just before going to sleep and just before I wake up properly that I come up with my best writing ideas and so have made a point to write down whatever I think of (which is a pain when I'm in bed wanting to go to sleep!) Sometimes these ideas are for new stories or sometimes I solve plot problems I had been stuck on for the entire day before. Sometimes, however, I discover that I have written down complete nonsense!

I have some crazy thoughts before going to sleep ("I must get the bananas ready for the queen!") but none of them are really what I would call creative.

Have you ever wondered, if there is a way to regain, these flashes of insights, long after they have faded?

It was some crazy line integral that evolved trig functions and e's...It was just my brain's way of reminding me that I didn't do my homework.

I don't understand what you mean... I get those dreams every week or so. They occur more frequently when I'm in a happier, relaxed state.

There is something occuring to you while you are awake in your wider awareness that you can't quite articulate and it has something to do with your self expression. I can't tell more than this without more details. The following unsolvable nightmare indicates anxiety about something you are trying to solve, but feel is not solvable.

I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but I can only play very simple melodies that I've taught myself over the summer. I also wanted to do photography but also don't have time for that. I also have a lot of things I can't articulate, like love, friendship, art, and my true self. Yes, I haven't been myself lately; I'm still searching for myself. Thank you, vaguely dissatisfied. You got me to think and reflect about myself.

Always. We are born with a great capacity for music, but rarely do we develop it. I think many people experience what you did the other night.
That happened to me a lot in high school, but I listened to music more often then. I had orchestras playing and symphanies... All kinds of stuff in my lucid dreams or in my half-awake modes. I didn't listen to much classical music as I'm not patient enough for it, but my brain seemed to like generating it.
I think this is the brain's way of entertaining itself and the soul's way of uplifting itself. The songs continue, but the memory of them may be fleeting. I can not tell if a note played incorrectly is flat or sharp. I sing off-key. I am not musically inclined, and yet, I have those Mozart dreams.
Also, I hate when I am trying to sleep, but my mind is restless. I keep on diong whatever I was doing for an unusually large amount of time during the day. If I was looking at floor plans, then I see blueprints in my sleep. If I was looking at gowns, I design fashion in my sleep. If I was doing calculus, I get a headache from doing it in my sleep. If I put off doing an assignment until the morning (a few hours before it's due), I dream about it until I have made my final decisions (because, you see, I am a P, and we hate making final decisions).
