View Full Version : Pet Peeves, things that cause distress

I was wondering what everyone else's pet peeves were and what causes you to just go crazy with frustration.
For me, usually sounds bother me. This may be because I am slightly ADD, but having someone in the background typing extremely loudly on their keyboard (like im dealing with right now) drives me to a point of frustration. It seriously sounds like someone is pounding away, it drives me nuts all the time, forcing me to blow my eardrums out with music. It also bothers me to hear other people eat or chew gum. Any form of popping the gum or even seeing it roll around in the mouth just drives me up the wall, and i have to do something to drown it out or cover it up or else I cant focus on anything else. This is something ive dealt with for awhile now, and I was thinking about going to a therapist about it, because I cant seem to fix it myself. Does anyone else have this problem?

people chewing in general doesn't bother me, unless it's pretty loud *shudder*

Yes. The sound of a potatoe chip bag rattling (crunch, crackle). The sound of people eating a crunchy sandwich also drives me crazy. I have found that my ipod works well with coping with the noise thing. For me I found that the loss of control in indentifying what type of sound drove me more crazy .

The sound of squealing tires and a "boom" bother me, whether I am in the car or not. People who open candy in cellophane in movie theaters irritate me. People who are late drive me crazy. Long lines in airports distress me. Rude people who can't say "Excuse me" or "I'm sorry" make me nuts.

I can't follow that thread for some reason, so I'll post here. I hate to hear car honking, phone ringing, and REALLY hate being startled by the doorbell! Interrupts my flow. I also hate when people mispronounce words like "especially" and when people misuse words like "and, etc." and when people use words that are far beyond their general-use diction, sounding like they have a vocabulary building word-a-day calendar.

Yes, this drives me crazy too, it hurts my ears. The ear doc said it was called "recruitment." (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) Sometimes if I clear my ears my holding my nose closed and blowing gently it helps.
I also use earplugs when I am needing to concentrate. My favorite type is "EZ Reader" by Howard Leight. I have to sleep in these most nights because sounds irritate me as I am trying to fall asleep and we live in apartment.

Sounds don't bother me, but I have random Pet Peeves such as people calling a three ring binder a notebook. It doesn't necessarily distress me, but ticks me off.

I have to agree. Grate on me as well...
Cell phone have given people new avenues to be exceptionally annoying as well...like taking the phone into the restroom....

For me it would have to be people who play with their gum. They sit there and take it out of their mouth and wrap it around their finger. It's disgusting. They should just get rid of the middle man and spit right on their hands. Then again I am a germaphobe.....

Aaah....what drives me nuts..... (Wife says it's a short drive, mostly tongue in cheek)
Stupidity, ignorance, people that do a fake laugh every sentence....ha ha ha ha. Public speakers that UH every other word. Traffic that is so much less efficient than it could or should be. People that stand two abreast and block the moving sidewalk at the airport. Large gatherings in general. The only way I get through an airport is in uniform with my facist hat on and repeated loud EXCUSE ME!'s which tend to move people quite efficiently. COMMERCIALS on television and radio.... People that bother everyone with their personal problems instead of just getting over it and on with the program (I know, that could prove unpopular around here) Mindless yacking and yacking flight attendants on the crew bus on the way to the hotel. And there's more......
One thing I've learned though. The one who loses is me, it is MY Ooohm that suffers. So over the years I have learned to anticipate the situations where I suffer and to either avoid them, or put myself in a position to deal with it.
I've given up on traffic. Gas prices make that easy. Road runs at three digit speeds are a thing of the past. Now I'm the slow guy in the right lane maxxing his mpg, listening to his XM radio. Oooohm.
I avoid crowds as much as possible.
At work, again the hat and on the crew bus my tunes on noise attenuating headset. I am so grateful for my tunes and headset.....
Bottom line is that I make a systematic and concerted effort to be in my happy place and not let the morons get me down. Fuck 'em.

I just started a new job. My boss is a type 3 with a 2 wing. He is not an NT, I think he's an NF or an SJ because he clearly has no problem with doing things in the same way because that's how they've been done in the past.
We moved from a small office into a big one. The furniture and desks were crowded together because we had no room. now we have more room. what does he do??? arrange the furniture in the EXACT same way as it was. the only difference is now we have a big open space in the middle of the room and long walls with only one bookcase on them because that's how it was in the old office. UGH!
He says, soon we will get you this and that, like a new chair and a new desk and nicer office furniture. He's been saying that every day for the past month. he thinks that really matters to me. I just want to do my work and be left alone. It matters to him because its SUPER important for him to impress people. he likes to flatter people whenever possible. whatever.
He likes to hear himself talk. I think that irritates me more than anything.

hmmm, a couple.
Loud Eating. I don't like the slapping noise, it drives me INSANE.
Gum Chewing- don't like the sound.
Cracking Knuckles- I will put you in a nelson damnit! GAH that is annoying. Crack your neck and I will probably faint.
Precise Pronunciations- Hit that T or C "kuh" sound too hard and it makes you sound snobby, imo.
Baby Talk. This will drive me out of the house or out of the room. It is that bad. Whining just as bad.
Sucking Fingers. No not the baby kind, when one is eating food and sucks fingers or licks icing off of fingers, this drives me up the wall.
Oddly enough I overcame the nails against the chalkboard thing.

haha. isn't it funny to think, sometimes how we feel about SJ's, I think moreso you guess, haha, they feel the same about us. I was reading a post and it is funny. we all have weakness in different areas and abilities to see the weaknesses in the areas which we are strong. it's funny because I don't want to be on the end of the wrath from an INTJ to an SJ but I've been on the receiving end being an NFP from an STJ. it isn't pretty. no it's not. lol. what I mean, is we will say, they are so un-progressive and annoying how they stick to traditions and fail to see higher intellect/possibilities, and an STJ may say, oh it's so annoying how messy they are, or how bad they are at getting things done on time. i cant think of a ton of examples cuz im not an STJ but i just think its funny how we exasperate one another.

Loud breathing. - It's not that hard to breathe. Put down the cigarettes, please.
Loud cell phone talkers. - It's like they're right beside you. Don't scream at them like monkeys.
Texting/Phone call while driving. - I'm just worried about myself here. I don't want to die just so you can type: "LolomgZ So tru!!11" to your best friend.
Any noise while I'm sleeping. - It gets amplified for some reason and it makes me mad, especially with bad music.
Religious people. - No explanation necessary. If you don't see why by now, don't ask.
Just a few I thought that I'd share.

Mispronunciations - it's a "library," not a "libary."
Loud speakers - No explanation needed.
Technology abusers - You know the guy who strums way, way too hard in Guitar Hero or doesn't know how to use a stylus properly?

Definitely both of these. I hear 'ask' pronounced as 'ax' so many times and it confuses me when people say that they're going to ax their friend. Technologically impaired people have no excuse, I think.

People who use the same expressions over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, especially if they are the wrong expression for the situation and still get it wrong even after correction over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
People who achieve extordinary things at a really young age. It makes me feel like I wasted my life. example: When the news shows that kid that finished college at 14 and I had to waste another 8 years to do the same thing even rushing through my Bachelors in 3 years, or the junior in high school that gets an offer from a professional sports team, I'll waste a lifetime trying to make that much money and all they did was play a silly game.
People who follow professional sports they aren't involved in in some way. I can't stand all the people talking about the Celtics, since I live near Boston. They even shut down the city for another freaking parade. A whole city is shut down because some tall guy put more balls though a hoop than the other tall guys from LA, who cares? Now the Red Sox game is playing over my regularly scheduled policitcal talk shows on the radio. They all just go around talking about nothing that really matters all the time and so much time and energy is wasted on this. Now, if some of the people I talked to were in an amature league or something I could understand but they are all just spectators in no way involved and they all act like it is so important.

- Chewing loudly.
- 'Talking' to babies. Why is it that all the mature, middle-aged and elderly people I am surrounded with suddenly lose all knowledge of language and sanity when in the presence of a baby? I do not appreciate having to put up with: "ATo view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. isn't he so cute! *cue unintelligible, unintelligent, slurring sounds complete with childish facial expression*"
It drives me insane.

People make those sounds around infants for a reason. Even monkeys do it with their young. So I wouldn't necessarily say they've lost their sanity, but are perhaps just doing what is natural.

Don't confuse colloquialisms with mispronunciations, though.
1)People reading over my shoulder while I am trying to work.
2)People standing right on top of me.
3)Loud whispering (if you’re trying to keep it a secret actually WHISPER).
4)Having the nerve to sit behind me and constantly hiss back and forth to each other during an interesting lecture. At least have enough respect to pass a note instead of opening your gobs.
5)Dr. Phil, telemarketers, and Ted Haggard (all self-explained).

To add a few of my own:
1.gossip
2.people who can't stop talking, especially if they just keep repeating themslves
3.having someone stand over my shoulder
4.people who assume that since I'm quiet and generally nice that I must not be intelligent
5.people who talk over me or ignore me on the occaional time I try to join a conversation
6.being told to smile
7.looking down on others for whatever reason
8. the very strange assumption that people have that I love Winny the Pooh. I don't know where the idea came from, but I grow very weary of getting gifts with him all over them.

*People invading my privacy repeatedly
*Fake people or being made to act fake
*People who keep talking and talking
*Repetitive tasks or tasks that require no thought.
*People who don't have the guts to tell you something to your face, but will gossip about you, when they know you're not around..in other words..cowards!
*Being told to smile or show emotion when I have no reason to do so.
*smiles at ScurvyRose* Twenty-eight pet peeves? That's all that you could come up at the spur of the moment? I'd hate to see how many you could put if you carried a notepad around all day :P.
I'll expand on your number sixteen, "Due dates on library books." I find it highly annoying I am waiting for a book to be returned so that I can check it out and the person returns it two weeks overdue. Zeus forbid that someone be waiting in line to *gasp* read a book.
LOL however, I find due dates annoying when I'm bogged down and trying to read an enjoyable book at the same time. Thank heavens for renewals.

Yes. Sound most definitely bothers me. I live in an apt complex that's fond of doing mass amounts of landscaping or maintenance of it. The machine noise hurts my ears. Also, crying babies are the most horrible of all time.
I also dislike price sticker residue, but not to a point of frustration.

I've got a few myself. These are in descending order from outright frightening to merely bothersome.
People who stop at the foot or the top of a moving escalator. (I'm a commuter and this happens all the time in the subway).
Anyone who eats while talking on the phone with me. Drinking something is tolerable as long as I don't have to hear the slurping.
Emotional inconsistency.
People who talk loudly on a cell phone whilst utilizing public transportation. Speaking softly is only barely more tolerable.
Poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. From others of course, but even moreso when I screw it up.
Tardiness by others for an engagement where I've busted my butt to get there on time.
The color Pink.

More on cell phones:
If a person is incapable of the wondrous skill multitasking, that person has no business on a cell phone doing anything other than standing still and speaking in a normal or lower volume of voice. I don't care to hear one side of a conversation I cannot participate in, don't want to participate in, by people I don't know or care to know.

I get SO ANGRY when people get very close to the back of my car with theirs. My car has problems, and I don't want to get into an accident by slowing down while some guy is trying to get me to go faster - in the slow lane. Sometimes people here even turn on their brights behind me to try to get me going faster! NOT HAPPENING. I turn on the hazards if anyone's that much of a moron. I've got out-of-state plates - why don't you just go around!? GRR!

People using words with the wrong meaning. Even more so when they use it almost correctly. Some words have very precise meanings, what I usually think of as degrees of meaning. Two words that would, by a dictionary, be defined as synonyms because no other words capture the difference so you can't defined, but are actually slightly different, specific meanings. It drives me absolutely crazy. These words have these precise degrees of meaning for a reason, and people need to know them or we'll lose them, and make English even more difficult to express a precise thought than it already is, and I already have to fight the language to say what I want. It's part of the reason I want to learn other languages: to help me communicate ideas with greater precision.

Cell phones when used ANYWHERE I can either see or hear the person using it
The stupid rings that people put on their cell phones
Inconsiderate people who have their nose in the air and are oblivious to the fact that the world does not revolve around them and that they are only a part of the environment and not rulers of it
People who drive while reading, putting on make-up, shaving, eating, or using technology
Jackasses with lifted trucks that are so impractical as to be useless for any other reason than to display their insecurities
Anyone who feels the need to rev an engine for absolutely no reason
People who cannot look at themselves objectively
Homeowners associations and the self-righteous pricks that run them
People who generally think that rules and guidelines do not apply to them
These are some of the more-irritating ones I can think of.
Someone mentioned George Carlin earlier having psychotic fucking hatreds. Mine are: while trying to help a patient in the emergency room where I work, they can't get off the fucking phone (land or cell)--obviously these pieces of shit aren't really having an emergency if they can't get off the phone long enough to have the doctor examine them*, and people who do not listen to what you are telling them, cannot read the enormous signs giving them precise instructions, or question every thing we tell them about their medical condition and care as though their two years of sub-standard high school education somehow equates to more knowledge than the eight-plus years of college a physician must have. Someone else mentioned baby talk and I agree 110%--speak to the child intelligently, he'll thank you for it later.
*The next time you are in an emergency room waiting to see a doctor, be sure to thank these inconsiderate assholes on phones because many doctors will simply walk out and not return for 15-20 minutes and keep doing so until the idiot gets off the phone. Meanwhile, the person is tying up a bed that could be utilized by other waiting patients.
