Following from the discussion (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) about what sort of music people here enjoy, I was wondering about more specific examples. My list is rearranged incessantly but, surely, all of this judging should lead to a resolute list of favorite albums? Pick ten, eh?

Oh look, another internet music thread where everyone tries to list really obscure bands. I hate these things.
fwiw, pretty much all Led Zeppelin albums are the best imo. Those guys are light years ahead of any other rock band. They basically ruined me for other music. Most other rock music (and any music for that matter) is utter crap.
I'll list some good albums anyway: Ten was really good, Throwing Copper, Weezer Blue album was good...there are others.

i didnt try to list a bunch of obscure albums (although a few of them are rather hard to come by). they're my top favorites. some of the best music you'll never hear isn't on the $9.99 rack at Best Buy, you know. BTW...i used to work for a band. I've probably seen over 500 shows... so :-P

Greatest band there ever was, and there never will be any greater, true perfection. I really wish I could have seen them in the 70s.
Obscurity of peoples favorites? I agree I haven't heard of nearly half of the bands mentioned, but I doubt this is a pissing match. Besides, there are a lot of younger people on this forum, so this is what I would expect.

Why do you automatically assume that these "obscure" bands don't have enough merit to be favorites? I know most of the bands listed in this thread and like quite a few of them. I didn't get into them because I wanted to be "cool" cause I listened to nonmainstream music, I sought it out because I enjoy music and didn't want to be limited by what I heard on the radio. It doesn't mean I don't like other stuff too.
Avoiding music only because it is obscure is just as bad as only listening to it to be different, in my opinion.

I didn't say they didn't have merit. And I don't avoid obscure bands. I just don't know many, I suppose.
It just seems like every time one of these threads is started on the internet it is about who knows more unheard-of bands. These threads are never started by people who are into Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Who....etc.
In fact, I could probably list 10 made-up bands, and nobody would even notice, so here goes:
1) Harper's Bazaar
2) Coltrane Stevens (his early work)
3) Tubesock Mania
4) Cloud 9
5) The poo-flinging monkeys
6) 12-string Tim Jackson (his mid-to-late work)
7) Britney's Spheres
8) Ringworm
9) Don't Tase Me, Bro!
10)Sascha's Kennel Club
These bands are so awesome but you have to know people who know people who know where to find dive bars and holes-in-the-wall in order to see them play! :P

to hurricane: if you are referring to Friday Night in San Francisco also featuring McLaughlin and De Lucia, I'm listening to it this very minute! :)
to Ares: i keep intending to buy Paradise Lost and then i put it back, because I've heard nothing from it. I like Symphony X, but I don't consider The Odyssey to be their best work, so where does the new one stand?
I was going to try and join in on the thread, but I tend to like bands over records, and it's hard to say X record sticks out more for me over Y. A few that were pretty earth-shattering:
Cryptopsy - None So Vile

Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns

Many of these bands are popular and well known in their respective genres. I'm guessing you just aren't familiar with metal and industrial, which accounts for most of the nonmainstream albums listed in this thread so far. I highly doubt those who listed those albums were attempting to list obscure bands, they're just fans of those genres. I like a lot of metal, so it didn't even occur to me that the albums in this thread were obscure.
For what it's worth, I do also like quite a bit of classic rock. I have all the major releases by Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, along with albums by other classic rock bands sprinkled throughout my collection.
And no, I'm not even going to attempt to narrow down a top 10 of my favorite albums. Making such a selection would be torturous for me. :stunned:

There is no way I'll be able to come up with a ranked list, but these are the top 10 I was able to produce, in alphabetical order: (band, album)
- Ayreon, The Human Equation
- Blackfield, Blackfield
- Dredg, El Cielo
- Nick Drake, Pink Moon
- Opeth, Still Life
- Pain of Salvation, Remedy Lane
- Porcupine Tree, In Absentia
- Riverside, Out of Myself
- Riverside, Second Life Syndrome
- Tool, Lateralus
Even that was hard! Partly because I grow tired of albums. And it's just hard comparing great past experiences, especially since the magic you once felt is growing increasingly faint.

There are quite some true masterpieces out there that didn't make the list either, such as Slayer - Reign in Blood, Psycroptic - The Scepter of the Ancients, Rush - Moving Pictures or Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, so take it for what it's worth.

That's interesting. The KMFDM fans I usually encounter have a preference for Nihil and express particular disappointment with Hau Ruck. I like Professional Killer, Mini Mini Mini, and Real Thing the best, but I love the album as a whole mostly. Maybe it's just because it's the first KMFDM album I ever owned and it stuck with me. Yeah . . . of the 10 I'd name, not one band has appeared in anyone else's 10 yet . . .
I don't think I listen to what I listen to because it's obscure . . . but because it's what I've found, what I can tell stories about, what is meaningful to me. It's not my desire that everything I listen to is obscure, and I'm very often disappointed that no one else seems to know about anything I care about.
My music-listening 'journey' appears to have taken me way off the "beaten path" . . . just the way the cards have fallen. I don't care to listen to radio . . . and I know of most "popular" music, but the snippets I hear in public are almost never compelling enough to make me hunt anything down myself.
That said, 10 albums I might say I "love" (in album : band format, organized by number of characters):
Get There - boa
Answer - SUPERCAR
Enter - Russian Circles
Blueshift - Splashdown
Legs to Make us Longer - Kaki King
Tribute to Tigers - By the End of Tonight
Live WMSE 8/06 - Kid, You'll Move Mountains
Hurtbreak Wonderland - World's End Girlfriend
saysomethingsaysomethingsaysomething - Via Audio
ANDROID like a house mannequin - Vola & the Oriental Machine
I promise: everything listed exists. Genre/style leans more toward edgy (away from easy listening--no elevator music here), but I'd be very surprised to meet someone who, after listening to everything, didn't find at least one thing to love.

thinking about it, i'd prolly try and shove K's Choice - "Cocoon Crash" in there somewhere. super mellow. love it. i'd probably bump the Monk for that.

i am extremely surprised by the variety of music in this thread, and the fact that there is an awful lot of metal and "non-intellectual" music right along with very mentally stressing music. i would have thought that if we were similar in any one thing, it would be taste in music. i was wrong!

hm. that idea never occurred to me. i think that what we enjoy musically has too much to do with our personal histories to have too much in common, though. my tastes have been heavily influenced by my family, my hometown, and my interests.
i'd definitely be interested to know how many of us had similar parents/authority figures growing up, though.

It's not even possible for me to do this overall... so I'll go with top 10 of 2007, and I really cannot even put them in order, though I suppose this is close:

No haha... funny story actually... well, no... but I'll tell it anyway...
I like to go to used CD stores and flop through every single CD... I remember reading about some great band with 'horse' in the title...
Low and behold, I found two... Band of Horses and Horse the Band
So I picked the one with the better cover art, and luckily, it was the correct band!
I'm going to go see Band of Horses toward the end of this month... I'm also seeing Editors next week! Hooray to good bands coming within a 3 mile radius of me! (Equally hooray for knowing people in those areas so we don't have to pay for a hotel!)

Good thread, and a tough question. Let's see...
My Top Ten Favorite Albums That I Can Think Of Right Now
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Some of the finest guitar pop to ever be recorded. It has that magic blend of virtuosity and pop hooks that most never seem to hit. That said, Ian Brown can't sing.
The Beatles - Revolver
Their finest work, even though most say Sgt. Pepper is better.
The Clash - London Calling
I'm never ever ever going to stop enjoying Rudie Can't Fail. Who doesn't like punk rockers who can play their instruments?
DJ Shadow - Entroducing...
It's like a big sound collage. He must have ripped thousands of old vinyls to make what he did. Everyone, regardless of what music he likes, should give this album a chance.
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
It pushes out "The Soft Bulletin" by a bit. A sort of modern take on a Pink Floyd soundscaped concept album.
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
I was trying to convince myself that I preferred something that wasn't so obvious, but no, I don't.
The Libertines - Up the Bracket
An absolutely fantastic record from start to finish. It combines punk energy, musicianship, and lyrics more on the bright side of Oscar Wilde than Morrissey will ever know exist.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
My favorite Floyd album. Though for some reason, I have a track record of falling asleep to it. It's odd.
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Freddie Mercury can sing. The songs are fun. It might not be that high caliber as far as musical art goes, but it's still good.
Radiohead - In Rainbows / OK Computer
I'm an indecisive jerk who can't decide which he prefers.

Some of my latest posts have been pretty "heavy", so I might as well post something a bit lighter. Not that I don't take this very, very seriously! I've anally thought about this many, many times, and my choices are still not chained down completely. I'm obviously a slightly punk/indie with a classic rock bent sort of guy. I'm also a bit older than most of the other posters here, so there isn't much here prior to 1990. This is in no particular order, except for #1, which I shall put in bold:
1. Big Star - Radio City
2. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
3. Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
4. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
5. Television - Marquee Moon
6. Graham Parker & the Rumour - Heat Treatment
7. The Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me
8. Mott the Hoople - Mott
9. The New York Dolls - s/t
10. The Clash - s/t
Subject to change, subject to change.... My favorite band of all time - the Kinks - wouldn't make it because they never made a perfect album.
Primus- Frizzle Fry
Frank Zappa- Sheik Yerbouti
Frank Zappa- Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar
Buckethead- Crime Slunk Scene
Skankin' Pickle- Skankin' Pickle Fever
Metallica- Master of Puppets
The Flaming Lips- Zaireeka
Aphex Twin- Richard D. James
Afroman- Because I Got High
The Individuals- Something to Smoke Too

Afroman- Because I Got High
Umm, are you joking? Didn't he just have that one novelty song? Great song, but....errrr.....not exactly expecting a great album from that guy.
Umm, are you joking? Didn't he just have that one novelty song? Great song, but....errrr.....not exactly expecting a great album from that guy.
Look it's not one of my all time favorites, but currently I find myself listening to the album often. I don't really care for the Because I Got High song. He sings about a variety of things such as beer, sex, marijuana, and finding Jesus. While I don't care for finding Jesus, he does it in a non offensive way.
To be far the Individuals which I listed below Afroman is a rap group from Chicago who rap about marijuana and being thugs. But mainly about smoking marijuana. I saw it at a head shop, bought it, and fell in love with it.
They might not be the greatest albums, but I do enjoy them a great deal.

Randy Travis - "Always & Forever"
I don't listen to 99.9% of country music, but I have to admit that really is a great CD. My father used to play it all the time when I was a kid. They just don't make country like that anymore.

I can't stop listening to Modeselektor Happy Birthday! album. I'm generally not a fan of album covers, but this cover I find adorable.

Unbelievable! There's also unique videos to accompany each track of the album. Definitely worth tracking down if you have the chance!
The miscellaneous info on the BT wiki page reminds me of an episode of Star Trek where math aliens are introduced to music for the first time and write music using converging mathematical formulae.

No Pixies or Frank Black? I didn't see them in a single post. I was certain they would be on a fair percentage of INTJ top bands of all time lists....maybe its a generational thing. I am not capable of making a top ten music list unless the category is more specific (ex. Top Ten albums to listen to on a road trip after your cat died (but you hated the cat)). Either way, the pixies would be on most of my top ten lists.

I going through a phase where I never like a song for more than a week. (I'm 15 by the way)
Currently I'm into Dolly Parton, Iz (What a Wonderful World, Somewhere over the Rainbow), the Corrs.
But at normal times, Guns N' Roses, Rammstein, Blur, some R.E.M, Foo Fighters, Santana, The Pixies (Me! Me! here's one), Metallica, Matchbox twenty, Three days grace are my favorite.
Muse, before I got sick of them.
Some bands you might accuse me of liking are Jimmy Eat World (anyone calling them sell outs?), Weezer. I even listen to 'heavily-scandalized' Simple Plan for a change.
I listen to everything-- bubblegum pop to oldies (real old ones) to death metal. I get sick of songs very very quickly.
Is this a trait of an INTJ? I think not?

Paul Simon - Graceland

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
The Cars - one of the greatest hits albums, forget which one
Def Leppard - Hysteria
NIN - Downward Spiral
Enya - Watermark
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
Metallica - Metallica
Alana Davis - Blame it on Me

This thread is a shock to me. I can't believe I, a wee ENFP can musically out-snob a roomful of INTJs.
I simply must chime in.
Here are ten of my current favorites.
Kurt Rosenwinkel - Deep Song
Elliott Smith - XO
Bill McHenry - Roses
Frank Carlberg- Land of Art. And everything else on the Fresh Sound label.
John Hollenbeck/Claudia Quintet - Semi-Formal
The Bad Plus - Give
Tin Hat Trio - Helium
Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at Village Vanguard
Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple
John Zorn - Filmworks XIII Invitiation to a Suicide
Robin Nolan Trio - Travels
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Mr. Bungle - California
I will try to control my shock and horror that not everyone Loves this music as much as I do...!

Am I the only one who has a hard time picking definite favorites for things? I recently picked my favorite band but that was a very difficult process.

nope, I don't think I can either. it's too transient. Favorite is an AWFULLY strong word. over the years I figure it's what remains in my playlist thru thick and thin and almost nothing ever does.

That's how I figured out my favorite band. I'm already especially picky in music because of my background in it so the way I choose what to listen to is odd.
In no order (and subject to change):
Trespassers William - Different Stars
Damien Rice - Either one of his albums will do.
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Snow Patrol - Final Straw
Stone Sour - Come What(ever) May
Simon and Garfunkel - Uhm.. Bookends
Joshua Radin - The one CD he has out..
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Beatles - The White Album
I know I'm missing something, but that's about as far as my brain will let me think.
