Are you comfortable willingly putting yourself in a vulnerable state in public?
Ok, sometimes I have time to kill in between classes so I go to the Student Lounge and curl up in a chair and take a nice nap. I think the deciding factor for me would be the amount of people traffic going in and out of the room. I used to think that I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping in public, but it wasn't so hard afterall. I don't really count all the times I've nodded off in class, because that was all unintentional lol

Oh hell no. I won't even sleep over at friends' houses.

Correct. It's crazy to do otherwise. I've stayed up for more than one night in a row at other people's places. Them, after popping into the kitchen for a midnight snack and finding me perched on something. "Ack! It's some demonic hour of the evening! What are you doing up?" Myself, sounding drunk, "You shut up! I'll sleep when home I'm. Ah, breakfast now? No? You go to sleep." ::) I won't sleep during long trips. That's what books are for. I am the best at talking to keep some driver awake through long trips. I am not afraid that they'll steal my stuff or anything. I am mostly afraid that they'll mess with me. That's my bubble, yo. Don't be straying inside of it.

Where? Oh, those that would stray inside someone else's bubble? I agree. Wouldn't it be uncomfortable? You should be used to your own bubble.

I had a nice pair of sunglasses and my knife stolen from me while I was asleep after a party at a friends place. If I have to sleep in public, I'll do it in my car with the doors locked and a weapon close by.

I have fallen asleep but the reason was mainly due to extreme tiredness, I try to force myself awake and even though I hate microsleeps I'll bare with them until I get home (not driving just on public transport).
Like TruorTupnm I used to end up in the front of the car during family trips at the end of the day because everyone else would sleep. I guess this is paranoia or letting go of the reins and trusting someone who you don't know.

Sleep in public?! I can barely think in public. That said, extreme exhaustion has driven me to doze in the car before. I consider the car to be my lockable extended bubble.

As a rule I won't sleep in public - primarily because there are few public places quiet enough (I am a very light sleeper, a slight breeze will wake me up), or comfortable wnough for me to fall asleep. As others have said, it's only extreme fatigue that will get me sleep in public.
I will, however, sleep in my car and have done so on numerous occasions. Like chocky says, it's my extended "private space" so I feel secure there.

When I was a kid I used to have this strange paranoia about sleeping while other people were awake (and would even end up waking up pretty early at sleepovers, after being the last to fall asleep). I think a lot of it was that I didn't like the idea of other people being able to do stuff to me and watch me while I'm unconscious, and then after I might never even know.
I still don't think I could sleep in public though, as I don't like to be watched or seen sleeping (and besides, who knows who's going to come accross you in public or what they might do). Even when I sleep in my room, if my roommate's still awake I have to be facing the wall or completely under the sheet.

Earlier this year, I fell asleep while my dentist was working on my teeth.

Hilarious
I can sleep in public pretty easily but I'm a very light sleeper (almost as alert as I am awake, just with my eyes closed) so I'm constantly trying to figure out if anybody's near me when I sleep in public. Most of the time I'll force myself to stay awake if I can though... the thought of somebody pulling a prank on me while I sleep (I've seen too many movies) makes me suspicious and paranoid.
I do tend to fall a sleep when traveling by train or bus, but its really just a very light sleep.
Once I visited a demo-party (some kind of LAN-party) and the music was extremely loud. Well at the end of the day I also was extremely tired and fell asleep. I slept for almost 12 hours before one of my buddies woke me up. At first I thought they had finally turned down the music but then my hearing abilities returned and I realized the music was still extremely loud. I guess my brain had just internally turned off the volume or something...

as long as i feel reasonably safe, yes. nothing bad has ever happened to me sleeping in airports, dormitories, or (non-urban) parks. i won't just lie down in the middle of the road, though.

I kind of had the same sort of paranoia, except it involved closing my eyes around people. I never wanted to close my eyes around others for more than the time required for blinking at some point. Maybe it was a trust issue. *shrug*
Nowadays I'm pretty good with sleeping on trains or planes.

I can sleep almost anywhere in public. I will sleep sitting in the airport waiting for my flight. I've slept in my college library on the floor between stacks. (nice and dark and quiet back there!). I'll routinely fall asleep in the chair at bookstores, etc.
In fact, I was sleeping at Barnes and Noble one day with about 7 people nearby in chairs and I awoke because SOME DUMB "E" B*TCH was talking loudly about how she "could never just sleep like that in public!..." I woke up and just glared at her then left. What a rude b*tch. I mean how dumb can you be?

Yes. Soundly and comfortably like an infant. ;)
Vulnerable? While I'm asleep? Don't think so. If anyone bothers me during my shut eye time, I'd snap. :)

Sleep anywhere, no problem, I combat nap. I once slept through a nine hour mortar shelling of our UN base in Eritrea. It was my 20th birthday, and my buddy just let me sleep through my watches and covered them for me. Get close enough with ill intent, and I wake up, stumble over me by accident and I sleep right through it. I love my threat filters. One the most useful and valued little talents I have.

Ah. Mine is not as refined. While at home and sleeping my room, little but a planned alarm will wake me up. There have been tests. Hm. Which might account for why I am not a large fan of sleeping while others are awake. ::) Any unfamiliar spot, anything will wake me up, no matter how tired I've gotten. "Ack! I don't know how many booby traps are in the wall I've leaned up against!" Sure, booby traps are unlikely but still plenty possible.
I used to believe that I had a trust issue with people I didn't know (or people I didn't know WELL), but my recent trip to Austin disproved me. I sleep like I'm dead, I don't snore, I don't move, I breathe quietly and shallowly. I was with some other students in Austin Studios, along with my art mentor, doing a short student film. We were meant to stay up all night editing the film. Someone started watching a movie, so I went over and laid down. next thing I knew I was waking up 2 hours later. Then again, sometime at around 5 AM, I laid down to rest, and 3 hours later my mentor was kicking in the legs to wake me up. He said he had been kicking and yelling at me for ten minutes before I woke up... ;D

I usually can't sleep for crap in cars, buses, etc unless I'm absolutely dead tired. But my sense of awareness is very heightened as opposed to normal sleeping. Like I'll be much more aware of people and I won't fall asleep quickly at all.

Nope, no way, no how. A previous poster put it best "hell no" :). For me to sleep even I have to have complete darkness and no silence, otherwise I can't sleep (My record is 6 days of no sleep because of my roommate and I eventually kicked him out). But yeah, no way I would sleep in public, too many weirdos :P

I went furniture shopping with my mom today and fell asleep on a recliner while she was talking with the salesperson.

Yes, I slept in that situation, too, but so were many others. Very peaceful feeling somehow, after the first class or two, mid-morning. Watching the trail of other students nearby while a dozen or so of us dozed.
I inadvertantly did the same thing alone recently in a public library; high school and college-aged kids thought it was funny when they saw me. When I was their age, I probably would have thought so, too. :D

Nope, not on purpose. I like knowing whats going on around me. If I'm around people I know or in a car or something to hide myself yes but never out on a table or bench. I don't even like sleeping over other peoples houses. I have one friend now who I kind of feel bad about because I refuse to stay. Its not that I don't like their company just that I use that time to recharge myself from people. It takes me 30 minutes to an hour to fall asleep anyways, if I slept over it would be an hour or two.

In most situations I am..
If there is someone in particular that I dislike that is around at the time though...then, no..I prefer to stay on my guard.

I am very much not. Sleep is vulnerable time. I like to sleep with my door locked if possible. The funny thing is I had no problem sleeping when ever where ever in the middle east. I guess I felt more secure in a combat zone than here,

Depends on how you define sleeping, I can sort of sleep, but I'm so conscious of everything going on around me that I start getting paranoid at the slightest sound. It's worst in public like at a library on campus because I don't know who's around me and I'm really paranoid about people stealing things or doing things to me. My campus isn't dangerous at all, I just have that paranoia that I picked up in highschool and never really shed...

I can sleep if I'm on exposed, or feel like I'm on unsafe grounds. I slept in my car for a week straight when I was working fireworks. Either it was from 11-6 or from 6-10, depending on my shift.

I really don't like sleeping anywhere at all and if my mind & body didn't require it I wouldn't sleep at all..........someday we are all going to be sleeping for one very long time - Life is for Living........

Curiously, the thread made me realize that my two male INTP friends (one's an engineering major, one's a physics major) can fall asleep anytime, anywhere (and often sitting up, which amazes me).
I can only sleep in a public place if I'm sheltered and it's relatively private, and I know I'm safe, and my stuff is looped around my limbs so no one can steal it.

No. People might take advantage of that. I do, however, feign sleep in order to avoid others. *shrugs* Works every time!

My favorite is the "headphones in ears, but not listening to music" escape that my INTJ male friend taught me. Works like a charm b/c no one bothers you and you can Ni till the cows come home.

Oh, I do that as well! I love Niing, specially when I'm looking out the window of a moving vehicle.

specially when I'm looking out the window of a moving vehicle.

If by "public" place, you include church, then yes - I am more than willing to fall asleep in public.
Vulnerability is a mixed bag. It isn't as if I'm truly any less susceptible to injury (probably moreso) while awake, then when asleep.
