Hi,

I'm in the market for a portable gps. I know the major brands are Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom, but was wondering if anybody here had a strong opinion to share about which brand/model they liked best and why. Mostly, I'm just looking for best value. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Garmin have the best reputation over here in Australia. That's about all I know though.

TomTom 720G is your best GPS SatNav system you can buy for its price and features. I believe it has free traffic updates for life, but Garmin have the best technical support team in the business.

I used to work for a competitor of TomTom, but now use TomTom to get around. I guess it says it all :-)

Their UI is superior to anything I've seen out there. The system just works.

I still use an early Garmin, the iQue. I'm still amazed by it. Hubby purchased a
lower-end TomTom for me this past Christmas; it was like the stone ages compared
to the Garmin and I returned it. Perhaps the higher-end TomTom's have more functionality
than the one I was given. But when the iQue(s) die (we have 3 between 2 people), I'll
look at the Garmins again.

The manager at Radio Shack says he likes the Tom Tom the best.

I like the fact that you can edit the information in it yourself. The others don't offer that.

Also, I think it was on Amazon, there was a lady who used a TomTom while her family members in another vehicle used another brand. They went on a long trip to Texas. As she compared the two, she concluded that the TomTom was better.

I found her review

There are lots of other reviews on Amazon, too.

NoahAddle, this is a review of the entry-level GPSs by Garmin and TomTom that very
accurately describes my frustration with the TomTom, especially in being able to find a store by name.

In an afternoon side-by-side test, I would input, say, Hancock's. The Garmin found all nearby Hancock's stores; the TomTom found zero stores, nada, zilch.... very frustrating. That was my experience across the board.

Well, yeah, if you know the address of a place the TomTom will take you to it, but what if you don't know it?

Also, the Garmin displays the phone number of the sites -- TomTom, no -- as described in the review.

It's over $500.

So! I can watch movies! and run off the road because I am not paying attention! And a standard GPS is about 300 around here anyways. So pay a bit more to have it play music too, that's my thought. I hate clutter fucks of wiring and gizmo's, I'll pay more just to get more.
