irony. dejavu. odd coincidences. completely random anything.

when something random takes my mind off of whatever i was just thinking of and getting down about, i find that immensely humorous and then i laugh because something so random distracted me as so sensitive a time. its a complex process.

My friends. We're a very cheesy, corny crowd. Also, remembering a time I came upon a deer standing in the middle of the road late at night. Man, that was 10 years ago and it still makes me laugh.

i used to be very ironic when i was younger. i didn't understand why people were stessing out about their own opinon - one of many opinions - while i was still looking for a worthwhile opinion. then i became cynic, one opinion - the seach was over. now i'm open to different opinions again, but without frowning upon them, without irony. different personalities, different realities.

if you paid close attention you might see me smile thinking about certain things. i don't think those thoughts are random though. in my opinion you only pay attention to things that are important to you.

For me: Music but specifically songs that are upbeat like, "Lounge Act" by Nirvana or "Come Out and Play" by The Offspring (not upbeat in message but upbeat in instruments).

Usually it helps to 'lose' myself in the songs until I forget about the badness and then I can objectively think about what's gotten me down.

i've met a couple from "lappi land" this summer in a much warmer country and they had a story about a deer and a total loss car accident to tell... tell me your story, dear ;)

My ISTJ friend does this really good impression of Homer Simpson trying to say the word "trampoline" from a particular episode of the Simpsons and it ALWAYS, not matter what is wrong with me, makes me laugh.

Other than that, chocolate, beer, Terry Pratchet books, The Venture Bros, thinking about Jean Luc Piccard and talking to or hanging out with my friends.

I'm pretty easy to cheer up.

I was about 18 or 19, driving home at about 2 or 3am. Full moon, clear sky, deserted country highway in the US. Having finished Driver's Ed (ok, so I was 18 then) recently, I was still rather cautious. I also knew deer to frequent the area in which I was driving, so I was extra cautious.

Up ahead, I see two flashy little eyes. I slow down. It's a white-tailed deer just stand there in the road, staring at me. As taught, I slowed down, and beamed down to the low beams. He's still standing there. I'm getting closer now. I'm tired, it's late, I want the deer to move. More paranoid that he night somehow destroy my car (deer in Upstate NY -- where I was -- are notorious for this), I started thinking of ways to make him move while I slowed down. He wouldn't move, just staring. I flashed my lights a couple of times. Nothing.

Finally, I had to come to a complete stop. We were at an impasse. I tried creeping up, hoping this hulking piece of metal would encourage him to move. Nope. Staring. Staring. Stop staring you damn deer!

Racking my brain, I did what I thought the teacher would have suggested. I peeped the horn (I mean, just barely a tap). WOW!! :scared:

You'd think the deer had been electrocuted! He jumped up in the air, suddenly incredibly mobile. Of course, his hard hooves didn't have much traction on the asphalt. He fell down in a frenzy, right there. Fur was flying everywhere as though he was in the grips of a life or death fight with a wolf. He struggled to get up, slipped, and fell down several more times. Finally, he was able to gain enough traction to leap off the road and into the nearby field.

I laughed and laughed and laughed until I cried tears of laughter. I was *completely* astounded that the tiny peep from my car horn had had such an effect. I had to sit there, staring at the large pile of fur in the road for a minute, laughing, shocked, tired, and trying to recover. I felt sort of mean for scaring the deer to thoroughly, but the little bastard wouldn't move!

When I visit home, I can't drive past that spot without thinking of that deer. I bet he didn't try to stare down anymore cars after that night.

Driving like a maniac

Oh yeah that's a good one. I'd add to my list:
Engaging in mindless activities like shopping (especially for clothes, books or CDs)
Reading a good book or trashy magazine
Receiving an unexpected compliment or accolade

Beauty in nature (usually involving sunlight&/animals), acts of kindness... those are without fail.

Others include reading a good book that involves lots of thinking. I suspect it triggers my T to become more active and drive out irrational feelings.

Getting into very academic conversations. Again, activating the power of the TEE!

Sometimes writing a really long rant, trying to rationalize irrational feelings works too...

All i do is start to think. i know it sounds like the typical INTJ answer but it works. If i get lost in my head i forget circumstances. I dont handle stress well at all, i just collapse.
The other thing that works is a fiction book, preferebly by the greatest author know to man, Michael CHrichton ;)

I guess just doing things that stimulate the senses. New experiences (i.e.- trying out a cool new restaurant). Watch your favorite movie. Listen to invigorating music. Buy a new toy if you can. See what's new with other people. (Especially ones with kids... they usually have crazy stories to tell ...even if you have some of your own.)
Funny thought that NTs need sensory stimulation... maybe we starve ourselves of it sometimes & need to play catch up!

1. Talking to strangers. Sometimes I am in the shittiest mood, feeling that if I were God I'd toss the Earth into the Sun and start over. But then I think, nah, it would be much more fun to fuck with them first. Cure all the diseases. Erase starvation. Eliminate all evil. And once they all believe in my miracles... *then* toss them into the sun. But slowly, so they have time to realize that their God could save them if He felt like it ;-)

Anyway, when that happens, I go out to a cafe or bookstore or whatever and start talking to random strangers. It can be about anything. Doesn't matter. Just to feel the human connection. And usually after an hour I feel better, and stop thinking about destroying earth, and get back to planning its conquest.

2. Read some articles about astro-physics. Realizing that the universe is vast, the Earth is tiny, and humans are utterly insignificant -- if the earth fell into the sun it really wouldn't much matter -- has a very uplifting effect on me. (Armageddon as inspiration, sure sign of a misanthrope).

3. Writing jokes. I used to do stand-up comedy. The best jokes are written when you are in the worst mood. You just start ranting about something. Really hating on it. Preferably out loud. And then you twist it a little bit, and it becomes totally hilarious, and you are happy that you wrote it.

4. Go to the gym. The adrenaline is a natural boost. And I'm always uplifted by perky young tits in a leotard.

5. Get something done. I have got a lot of great work done when I was pissed off. It motivates me.

I need to divert my attention. I'll surf the net and go from site to site, sports, politics, gossip, whatever to stop replaying whatever got me upset.

I don't know if I really cheer-up from when I'm down, but I do my best to get to equilibrium.

Get up, get out and take in a good dose of E. The attitude. Possibly indeed sensory stuff...dancing, shopping etc.

Alternative: being around animals or immersing myself in literary theory.

Seeing where what makes me down is funny and laugh at it instead.
Problem is now I see myself a "silly boy" with silly problems.
Although time and diversions work very well.

Oh and when I'm happy I get more Extroverted and willing to be with friends/family, when I am sad I get more Introverted wanting to find out what's wrong. I'm not exactly a happy person, I'm more "oh well it could be worse".

Art. Sometimes the things that make me happy also put me down (e.g. music, museum exhibits), but those aside, working with my hands helps a lot. Getting lost in creating something makes time pass without me realizing. I can forget what had me down for a couple of hours by distracting myself with something else.

Laughter is really magic in its healing properties. If you can make somebody laugh, you can help them feel better no matter what's got them down. Even if they're still depressed, it can take the edge off. I love a good laugh, no matter my mood.

i agree. what makes you laugh though?

How ironic/typical/bitchy/wow didn't see that coming/tragic/mischievous the universe can be.

I guess it's a coping mechanism. If something bad happens to me, I normally just laugh out of sheer desperation. Once it's happened, it's happened, and there's nothing you can do (short of time travel) to change that. All that's left is to laugh and move on.

If I am really down, not much at all. I deal with depression, have had 6-7 episodes since about age 15, am now 59. Getting out in the sun, driving, playing with my dogs, cooking, putzing on a project -- any may, or may not, help.

Getting an instant case of the giggles just does not happen.
