Given the presence of the WoW thread, and given the sorts and number of people that frequent this forum, I thought a few people might play or have played EVE. Myself, I haven't played since about March 2009 or so. I had played off and on with a myriad of trial accounts and several active accounts since August 2006 up until then. My most recent account played from about May 2008 to July 2008, then about October 2008 to March 2009.

A good part of why I quit is because my corp got to be more serious than I was really prepared to deal with; in particular, a week long operation was planned in advance which would have required me to obtain about 250 million ISK in about a month. Entirely feasible (as I recall at the time running L4s made me about 4 mil/hr if I remember correctly, maybe more), but tedious nonetheless. (Note that, in my corp's defense, I wasn't booted for not doing it or anything; it was just strongly encouraged, since it would be necessary to participate in corp ops spanning about an entire week). In addition, during and shortly after this time (as it happened, the operation got canceled due to some problems arising), I was just plain unable to get anyone to go out and PvP, which is where the actual fun of the game is. That was annoying for obvious reasons. I mostly continue to not play it because it's less flexible about playtime than other things that I can play, like Starcraft or single player RPGs; compared to those games it is considerably harder to hop on EVE for a couple hours and expect to have some fun. My RL schedule pretty much requires that kind of flexibility, and will for a few years to come.

Anyhow, I'm actually still a huge fan of the game, at least conceptually, despite not playing it myself; personally I think it achieved more than any other MMO has, to date. Does anyone else play this game, or has anyone else played it?

I've tried to play EVE a few times. I think I've downloaded it and gone through the trial period about 3 or 4 times.

My problem is that it's not "easy" to meet other people to group with. The few acquaintances that I have who play were so far into the game that I couldn't really "do anything" with them.

And maybe it's just me, but EVE in some ways crosses the line from being detailed enough to be interesting into being just too overwhelming. I've experienced that with other games (Caesar series, for example) where I enjoy the concept and the game, but then you get even more stuff to keep track of, and at some point it just becomes "too much" for my simple mind.

I love the idea of EVE, but I've just never been able to get hooked into the game play of it.

Played it for 8 months or so and quit playing it a year ago. I found that I had little incentive to play to improve my character and that playing was simply grinding money and reputation. I never got into the epic fleet battles and spent very little time in 0 sec. You could say I really missed the point of playing it. The group I was playing with slowly lost interest as what tends to happen with us. We are currently losing interest in playing Planetside.

In EVE, one of the downsides is the money required to participate in PvP and the skills required to be competitive take a minimum amount of time to achieve. Of course, you could run with cheap frigates masses like Goonswarm (primarily as a distraction). That wasn't the kind of experience I was looking for.

I almost made this post the other day... I LOVE EVE. The idea of it, from both developmental/conceptual aspect and the story line. The openness. The vastness. It took a while to grow on me. I played for about 4 months last year during the semester before I graduated, then lost interest. I started getting back into it about 8 months later and now after playing fairly consistently for 8 more months, no other game can hold my attention. Yes, it is a bitch to learn, and after about 20 months playing I am still just now learning how much of the game I have left untouched. It just keeps drawing me in more and more. And the whole skills over time makes it so it takes a while to get to the meat of the game, and constantly fearing that you could lose EVERYTHING you've worked to fit is hard, until you get to a place where you understand the game mechanics enough that you could replace anything T1 without much trouble... But that just makes you feel more of a connection to what you have in game and value it. Then you can get into PvP, wormhole exploration, manufacturing, running POS, exploiting the market, probing and complexes, or just plain griefing =D

Ugh...Mjolnir's post makes it hard for me to keep away, heh. My character still isn't deleted despite my account being suspended since May (I made a 3 month payment in February), so I could play...hmm. I might play, but I'll probably wait at least until the fall semester starts so I don't get too sucked in to be able to keep up once it does. At least the fact that I'm booted from my corp should make it a bit easier to play more flexibly (though it'll be harder to find fleets).

I'll definitely shoot you guys evemails if I restart; my character's name is Skotia.
