View Full Version : Is Copy & Paste Okay?

Sometimes people say really helpful things on their post that I'd like to meditate on further at a later time. Is it okay to copy & paste it (i.e.- in an email acct., etc)?

Copyright laws seem to vary a bit, so thought I would ask just to play it safe. As I said, it would just be for personal reading later, so I wouldn't have to browse through the whole forum to read it when I want.

(On the chance that I may want to share it though, is that okay, too?)

Perhaps just send a PM to the particular poster just asking to clarify. I'm sure most people won't care if you're only using it for personal use.

I think that since someone submits a post, then that means that he is okay knowing that others will read it, since this is the target of posting.
Well, however because you say you want to play safe anyway it would be good to follow HackerX's advice. I too agree though, most people would not mind if you just saved parts for later reading.
And about sharing, giving the link to the thread would be a good idea, that way you would give your friend the chance to get to know the forum and , who knows, they might even like it:rolleyes:

It's a murky grey area. Everything that people post here will by copyrighted to them (as much as possible under the relevant law) unless there is a clause somewhere on this site which says everything posted here becomes the property of the forum owner. But that means they become responsible for everything that gets put on the forum, which is difficult to control.

That doesn't stop you from using everything for fair use (saving it and viewing it later), since people have posted it freely giving you permission to view it, but you couldn't collect up a whole bunch of sayings say and sell them as your own.

(IANAL)In general, posts on forums become the property of the forum owner with the disclaimer that posts don't reflect the opinions of the owner. I know that's included in the vBulletin default TOS, but I don't remember if this forum has a custom TOS or not.

no, i just wanted to maybe send it to a few people when it's something insightful/funny,etc. (honestly, probably wouldn't be very many b/c not many people engage in these kinds of subjects/humor anyway .)

you are expressly forbidden from copying and pasting any of my highly valuable posts here.

The copyright holder would have to show that he is suffering financial loss from your actions which decides the sum he wants to claim from you. Since the poster has posted in a free public forum he suffers no loss. The best he could claim is that you should credit him with the original work. Since you are not passing the material on, only saving it for your own reading, even this claim is invalid.
