I usually don't like online tests, but this one is pretty interesting.

"Most people are surprisingly bad at spotting fake smiles. One possible explanation for this is that it may be easier for people to get along if they don't always know what others are really feeling."

I got 12 out of 20. So I guess this means that the higher the score the harder it is to get along with people (i.e., A high score means you're more likely to be a misanthrope)?

I got 14 out of 20, but as I went further along, I didn't realize that hitting the "previous" button would also allow me to replay the video again. So, it could have been 16 or higher for me if I had elected to hit the previous button back to the beginning.

I really don't know what it says about me. Naturally, many of us here can be classified as somewhat harder to get along with. BUT, I did really well with that other test that asked us to pick what the subject's eyes were demonstrating. I don't know how I'd excel at these things when I have trouble with eye contact to begin with, and, like everyone else, when my social interactions haven't been big on conversing.

For this test, though, it seemed that I just had to follow a discernible pattern. That is, if I observed enough usage in the muscles around the eyes, I could choose correctly. If those muscles were static, it was fake. If they seemed more visibly contracted, then it was genuine.

The ones that fooled me had super huge smiles which utilized more muscles in the face.

Hmm. Interesting.
I got 14 of 20, the six I missed are an even split, three fakes that were genuine, three genuine that were fake. I also think I got psyched out by the assumption that some of them WILL be fake, or genuine, which causes second guessing (at least with me) I went by whether the smile seemed more voluntary or not.

It might have been really interesting if they were secretly all genuine or all fake, and you didn't know it until the end.

14 out of 20.

I always look to the eyes to see whether or not they mean it when they're smiling, but some of their faces in this exercise didn't move enough to tell me.

Very interesting.

after awhile though, I got to thinking, if I were standing in front of a camera, doing the silly experiment and someone said 'smile' the whole scenario would be so ludicrous that any smile I would come up with would be genuine...

RoqueBear

18/20.. I looked at the eyes almost exclusively. There were more than a few cuties who were easy on my eyes... I messed up on two of the older faces. When your that old, I'm sure you've had a lot more experience perfecting that fake smile. Reviewing, the ones I got wrong, they were genuine but I erred on the side of assuming it was a fake smile.

So this mean I'm a misanthrope, I really do hate people some times. However, its not my fault I'm observant. I consider myself to be a pretty good judge of character usually.

Yeah exactly, which led me to think about the whole 'they're TRYING to be fake' thing. If it's determined whether they are real or fake, then one or the other is intentionally displayed... which messes with my mind.

I would probably have scored higher, too, if it wasn't for the "play" button I kept clicking on it while I wasn't paying attention. It's probably no coincidence that most of us INTJs scored pretty high. Most of us are probably skeptical people who question things.

13 out of 20. Pretty interesting test, but not sure it means much. If I'm standing in front of someone, there lots of indicators letting me know if someone is genuinely smiling. My husband who made his living reading people and their reactions, only got 10 out of 20.

I imagine that they presented some stimulus to make them laugh or smile and cut the video to that exact moment. A lot of the ones that I identified as genuine shook slightly as if they were laughing.

18 out of 20. I got the last two the wrong way round.

I agree a lot of the genuine ones included some shoulder-action or head-wiggling, so not that hard to spot. The fake ones did go back to dead-pan too quickly as well.

I got 18/20...I missed #6 and #17. But coming into the test I'd already heard that the corners of eyes crinkle up during a genuine smile, so I knew what to look for.

IRL, I do believe that I'm pretty good at spotting fake smiles. I hate them, too. Sometimes I just want to say "Get that fake-ass smile off your face." lol. But then I'd get comments like "OMG, that guy is crazy!"

Eyes...I looked for people who's eyes didn't crinkle when they smiled. Also I looked for how much teeth showed and if shoulders shook. Usually if someone's shoulders are shaking it indicates genuine laughter. When you laugh your whole body gets into it. ;D

15 is higher then expected, but still I have some complaints! I am an INTJ, I overanalyze. Caused me to be very confused.

In the beginning, I just pressed fake or genuine. But then I started thinking.
If it's a genuine smile, then how can they record it with a white background? Did they tell really good jokes or something?
Aren't ALL smiles fake? I don't get it..

Fun test. I scored 16/20, more than I expected. I got two wrong out of the first three, so perhaps I need to warm up. I equally mistook fake for genuine and vice versa (2 of each). Major clues were changes in and near the eyes and body movement. Apparently you can tell a fake smile if the non-favoured side of their lips doesn't move much compared to the other. But first you need to know the favoured side. One can infer based on handedness, but this can be problematic. Some people (such as myself) favour their right hand, but are right-brained and, in most other respects, favour the left side of their body. Thus, you really need to know whether the person is left or right brained, or observe enough of their fake smiles to discern their favoured side.

Like some others, I questioned the reliability of getting real smiles on camera in what appears to be an artificial setting. The test makers could have been screening a comedy, telling jokes, etc. Then there are strange people like me who can bring on a genuine smile at the least provocation. Sometimes I smile just because I think of smiling, or smile because I'm trying not to smile. So, I'm confident that the test makers could've captured some real smiles if they were resourceful.

"You got 15 out of 20 correct "

I focused on the eyes as well, but for a long string of them, I just said - 1.FALSE 2.FALSE 3.FALSE 4.FALSE... (you get the idea). The people did look kinda creepy to me...

I would noticed that they'd squint quite a bit, laugh, and sorta jump around in a way. I found that odd, because I've actually just gotten out of my seat, stood in front of a mirror and fake smiled. Strangely, my eyes squint (and all that stuff they said a genuine smile had) nevertheless, even though I was fake smiling.

That's because you are good at it. INTJ's probably tend to be. Most people, when faking a smile, will exaggerate it as much as possible to seem more genuine. That results in little eye crinkling and a lot of painful-looking stretching of the mouth.

I got 20/20, but it wasn't really fair. I ordered Eckman's CDs a few years ago, and I got something like 94% accuracy guessing on high speed, which is much harder (because you have to guess out of 7 emotions - fear, sadness, disgust etc) and many of the expressions are only shown for a fraction of a second.

After I did the training, I got up to 100%. My guess is that ENTPs, ESTPs, and ENFPs would tend to be the best, since they're known for reading people well.

The eyes are the most important, but it's also the corners of the mouth. For a millisecond, they'll turn downward, when it's fake.

Fascinating article in the New Yorker, which led me to get the CDs.

11/20 I'd say my poor score is due the fact that I realized I didn't care if their smile was fake or not. Besides, I really wanted to say everyone's smile was fake, because they are part of a study with a camera in their face. What if the stimulus wasn't that amusing, then the smile would be diminished by it. Or if the person smiled at everything and laughed at everything, then smiling is seen as being something extremely basic and therefore not that much energy was put into it.

Eh...

What is "surprisingly bad" according to the BBC? Below 75%? I did decently; I missed four, which is at least a B grade. I misread both fake and real smiles.

How can anyone return to normal serious face after a genuine smile`?

That's the tell for me, or part of it anyway. "Look at the eyes" has been sincerity-gauging advice for enough years for it to have filtered into everyone's fake-smile repertoire. It looked like only one or two people in the test didn't try it, so unless everyone else here knows something I don't know about it, I'm not sure how they passed the test using that standard.

I don't usually bother trying to figure out if other people are faking, though, unless it's to see how they do it or for a game like this. If they're going to fake a smile, I'll react to the smile. Cuts down on a lot of social annoyances, most importantly:

What's up?
Nothing.
No, really--I can tell something's wrong.
I don't want to talk about it--well, no, I do, and let me tell you at length....

The following 4 things work for me:

- In case of shoulder shaking, the smile is genuine. However, non shoulder shaking does not make the smile fake.
- A genuine smile will fade slowly. A fake starts big, and then disappears very suddenly
- As we all know already, eye crinkling indicates a genuine smile.
- In case of doubt, I'll label them as fake.

As far as I know, that's all I analyze. And God, yes, they were ugly.

I didn't expect to do well. I thought this would be more suited to F types, who understand the social rituals better. But perhaps the INTJ should do well, now I think of it. More social types use these fake social rituals to get along with each other better, so it's in their interest to not know. Whereas we see right through them. Naturally, all the four I got wrong were genuines that I thought were fake. I see most people as fake deep in their hearts so I probably projected that fakeness into their eyes.

17. There were several clues as to wether they were fake or not.
1 - no movement of shoulders/head indicated fake
2 - no eye lid movement (creasing) indicated fake
3 - really big over the top smiles are genuine more often than you think
4 - excess eye movement (twitchy) indicated fake

I got 16/20. I never hit the back button. Sometimes when I'm talking to someone I can read their body language (I've studied many books on body language) and sometimes if I see a negative motion (biting their lip, crossing their arms) I try to diffuse the situation or go away. It's almost like I can read their minds sometimes, it's really a benefit. I can feel a situation this way. Sometimes I'm wrong though, and I'll misinterpret what the body language of a particular person is. It takes practice.

inactiveoffense added to this post, 3 minutes and 5 seconds later...

I always looked for the eyes and whether they crinkled. I never knew the ends of the eyebrows would turn down and the folds of the eyelids would lower in a genuine smile. This is very interesting. I'm sick of people's BS and learning this stuff will help me filter through that.

I got 17/20, which I thought was really good, until I saw that everybody else also got high scores too. Now I feel like crap. I actually judged the smile off of how it was formed - most real smiles look kinda ugly if you freeze frame them. Plus the eyes. Most eyes don't just stay alone.

Wow I got 17/20

I said that it was all in their eyes.
Also, some were so genuine in their smile that it looked like they were laughing.
Also, when someone arched their eyebrow it totally gives them away. Like they are telling us that they feel ridiculous or they're saying "give me a break"

I looked at the eyes; the eyes are a dead giveaway.

Snowdragon added to this post, 6 minutes and 41 seconds later...

I've taken this twice, I think I got 20 the first time and 19 the second, though it could be switched around. All you do is look at the eyes and eyebrows. Once you get it down, it's fun to watch politicians on TV without sound :)

I'll admit that I'm horrible at interpreting other facial expressions. My recognition is limited to smiles.

Yes, smiles are pretty easy to read. Many muscles controlled by feeling are around the eyes. Those are very revealing.

Except that in this test, everybody's face returned to a neutral state. I got 19/20 because I momentarily zonked out while looking at one.

Did anybody see the "disgust" test? Gah! I wouldn't have expected mouth care to get so bad... (The test claims those are maggots)

I don't know, but the people who are bad at detecting true smiles (assuming they're untrained) are autistics. Do any of the MBTI types tend to be autistics? I don't think that there are, but I've not delved too deeply in those statistics.

I think I have the lowest score. Could have done better with blind guessing.

I might have to work on this. I guess I have never paid much attention to whether someone is genuine in a smile or not. Some people really love my smile in pictures, but it is 100% fabricated. I think that supports the notion that most people get it wrong. I am no exception.

13 out of 20. When I took the test I looked for how fast the mouth went back to normal.

I got 18/20...I missed #6 and #17. But coming into the test I'd already heard that the corners of eyes crinkle up during a genuine smile, so I knew what to look for.

Funny, because when I fake smile, that's the one thing I make sure I do: smile so hard the corner of my eyes crinkle up. I guess i'm just counter intuitive or something like that and most people aren't...

18/20. In addition to the eyes, it is somewhat easy to spot who is smiling and who isn't, because I know that forcing a smile on purpose seems like it takes a lot of effort. Also, some of those who are actually smiling have little added movements afterward that convey "ok it's time to get serious," vs. "I have to waste as little movement as possible in my transition from a fake smile to a straight face."

I also think I got psyched out by the assumption that some of them WILL be fake, or genuine, which causes second guessing (at least with me) I went by whether the smile seemed more voluntary or not.

That was a problem for me as well. I got 10/20, which seems to be rather low for the people on this thread. How many were each, again? I can't recall right off, which is irksome.

The time before and after the smiles also threw me off quite a bit. I though near all of them were fake, an observation that likely deserves its own strain of testing, lol.

However i did read a book called The Definitive Guide to Body Language which has helped a lot.

Funny, I have a thing for Asian girls too. But I thought that girl could have tried harder, that was the most obvious fake one for me.

15 out of 20. The genuine ones seemed less forced, like they actually laughed.

19 of 20. The one I missed was genuine, but I suspected falseness from the limited facial movement.

Looked for:
Wrinkling around the eyes
Facial muscles remaining slightly tensed before and after smile
Unconscious movements of head, shoulders, etc.
Fluidity of the smile's formation and dissipating, itself (genuine ones are very smooth in forming, rather jerky in leaving - fake are the opposite)
Movement of the eyes/eyelids (did they obviously squint to try and fake the natural crinkles? One woman did. Also, where did they look?)

Course, they could all be fake or genuine, taking the researchers' or subjects' word for it isn't really more than subjective proof. But I've always taken an interest in trying to appraise peoples' honesty in emotional displays (I refuse to fake smiles, myself, because I always thought they seemed so terribly obvious. Never mind ridiculous to perform.)

Hrm. I got 16 of 20 correct.
I did the same thing basically, looked to see if the smile reached the eyes mostly.

17 out of 20. I went by gut, and thought I was bombing the test.

(In retrospect, I protest the three that I got wrong. The smiles may have been "genuine" in that they were unrequested,
but that doesn't mean they weren't uncomfortable, up to something.)

18/20. I just looked at how big the smile was and how quickly the faces moved.

You got 16 out of 20 correct.

It was surprising that I got so many correct. I've never considered myself very good at such things. It was interesting to note that the four I got wrong were all fakes which I incorrectly identified as being genuine.

12/20 woo I suck

Man, those were some goofy looking people

I don't mean to sound mean...

...But I agree.
15/20.

I typed most as fake. Not because because the smiles looked fake, but some of the people looked pretty artificial, too.

Definitely shows more in the eyes than anywhere else. The ones I got wrong were where it was right in the middle.

18/20! Yay...
It's pretty easy to tell, from the eyes, but essentially the genuine ones were.. laughing. Sort of. You could either see how only their faces moved or the whole body, and most often the genuine ones were easy to spot because they made me smile! :D
Muhahah. I should pay more attention to metacommunication in reality. After I read a book on it, I suddenly got better at it.

Pretty high yeah. Average is 12. But apparently Ns tend to score high or something.

"You got 17 out of 20 correct"

Looks like INTJ's are quite good at this.

Personally, at first I was using eyes, but later i've noticed that those who fake smile, quit smiling in a shorter amount of time, while those who were really smiling took some time to stop it.
