I started my first career... oh... 6 months ago at a large corporation. The project sounded pretty awesome and I was also under the impression that since it was a new project, I'd get some development work.

Well... now the whole thing is going down the crap shoot.

I was moved to a new business area in November. I had finally received an awesome project assignment, then bam... no funding.

So on this new project, I got to work on some new/interesting systems. Right before Christmas I got two great assignments. I was all excited about going to work and doing this...

Well.... guess what? The new year rolls in and this project doesn't have as much money as they thought... so I get cut off again.

The way I see it is... I'm not really a human at this corporation. I'm getting thrown around from project to project with no real goals in developing me as a member of the team. Doing minimal, easy work that other people just don't have 'time to do.'

I am currently still a member of the 'original project' and just out on loan with this others project... however... the situation just keeps getting worse and worse. Since I'm so low on the totempole of employees, I feel like once I've been here a year, they're just going to send me off on the streets.

I'm currently trying to decide what I want to do... my friend thinks he can get me a position where he works (which is across the country....). It's a big move for me, but I see it as most beneficial.

I think what I really want to know is if anyone has been in a similar situation... can you talk me out of making a brash decision I may regret... or is this a good idea?

I'm really confused and concerned about my future.

If you see it as beneficial, I would give that alot of weight. You know your whole story much better than we do, trust your intuition. (more below)

I have been in a job that has been uncertain for years. I have stayed with the job because I am married and have 2 kids. I would love nothing more than to move on to another job - I've felt that way for years. I know myself also, and I am sure that given time, I could become unhappy in any job. My deciding factor is that my wife has some medical issues. Health care and benefits are a necessity. For me, the uncertainty of another job is a risk that I don't think would be a wise decision for me at this point, I just can't see walking away from something that I currently have and that I desperately need. It sure is hard on me to stay where I am but my day will come. So my advice to you is that only you know your full situation, do your best to think it through. Don't lose hope, don't lose your self confidence either - you got to where you are currently because of - You and your mind. I let myself forget that for a while. Hope that helps.

Sounds like my experience with the whole "corporate culture" thing. Started off well but as soon as things changed in the company I found I was just a tool. Shifted from task to task, building to building. My manager was nothing more than a go between and he was spineless. I also found the majority of upper management had their head so far up their ass it was incredible. I'm not sure how anyone could stand it. Sure I could get away with pretty much anything but it did nothing for me.

I then moved to a company of ten people and similar sort of industry. The experience and environment is much better but due to the loss of a manager (I thought being without a manager would be fun, well it was for about six months but I need direction it seems) and countless other factors I decided to move on just recently. Talking to a face on a PC once a week (the boss) is well... alienating.

I'm just recently taking a huge dive into a start-up business with some well versed people I am very confident in as well as myself. Well its been going for about a year but I've just been a bit slow to jump on. Hopefully this will be what I like because I can do pretty much anything and want to do it give everything a go. Plus the amount of work around is staggering, personally I can't wait.

I would just give it a chance. I usually give it 2 - 3 years before I get itchy feet. My best experience so far was with a medium sized business but that was in the beginning. It was just a starting place.

If you know what environment you like best then congrats but otherwise I guess its just a case of working it out by trail and error. Plus switching jobs to spite a manager doesn't usually work. There are crap managers in every company.
