I usually play computer games, but recently found a friend that really enjoys board games. We have been playing Settlers of Catan which is fun.

What board games do INTJs generally excel at or enjoy? My friend is a INFJ and really seems to enjoy strategy games that involve numbers (Like Settlers of Catan).

This list can include any game that can be played at a table.

I have never really gotten into Chess and have considered picking that up to learn together. I feel like Risk might be boring between two people, unless anyone has a rule set designed for two.

Any and all ideas are very much appreciated!!

I like Settlers of Catan too.

I've also gone through periods where I've been perilously close to Strat-O-Matic Baseball and Scrabble addictions. Both of those can be played on the computer, but I prefer the pace of the tabletop versions.

I LOVE board games. I enjoy almost anything made by Days of Wonder.

Mystery of the Abby, a more complicated Clue game, is a lot of fun.

Battlestar Galatica and Twilight Imperium are my favorites.

I'm a big fan of something like Monopoly or chess. Clue isn't that interesting to me, especially when people have no idea how to win nor play the game, so I usually win and that's boring. I like games with a higher skill-to-luck ratio. I would rather lose to a better player than one that simply got lucky, so I am drawn to chess for those reasons, as in chess one can never win for no rational reason; there is always something that they have that let them win over you.

Also, I love Scrabble, but it is contaminated by people who complain about their inability to create words out of seemingly non-connected tiles. It is fun, though, don't get me wrong.

And Risk does have a two-player rule set, but it's much more entertaining to play with more than 2. It reminds me of Starcraft in that regard: you can play both games 2-player, but it's more entertaining to load the games with the maximum number of players. I have played with 6 people, it becomes quite competitive and enjoyable. Literally, it's a case of "The more, the merrier."

I enjoy some boardgames: scrabble, risk, axis and allies, trivial pursuit, ubi.

I also really enjoy card games: texas hold-em, gin, rummy

I like monopoly, scrabble and risk. I find it hard to play the first two without annoying people because I actually care to consult the rule book. Also get accused of being too competitive when playing monopoly.:sulk:

Meh. Monopoly games all run the same. Players spend several turns circling the board, buying whatever they can. Most of the time, nobody will be able to get a monopoly. Money piles up until people get bored and trade properties and then whoever made the best trade usually wins, the best properties being the violet properties, since they are landed on the most, then followed by yellow and green.

Risk is more dependent on diplomacy and convincing other players to beat on another. It's a pain in the ass to dig someone out who's entrenched in Australia, and Europe and Asia are too spacious to defend.

Normally, I like Scrabble, until I play against cutthroat Scrabble players who build three letter words next to longer words to get a 3 X 2 scoring configuration, which doesn't build the board with vocabulary as much as twink the system. Worse, the official Scrabble dictionary is full of cheap, unused 'English' words and slang.

Also, its waaaaay too easy to beat Germany in Axis and Allies. The games stacked against it. All you have to do is help Russia hold out.

As for card games, I really enjoy Hearts.

Well, Australia is the "choke point" of the game. With only one connection to Siam, any opposing army can effectively be held off in Indonesia.

This is where the initial rules really make a difference. If you've limited the max armament in any territory to 12, then it's going to be a take a few rounds to get in. If this is ignored, then it becomes a bloodbath. Also how you trade in cards matters: 5 extra per trade in set? 5, 10, 15, etc per trade in set? the original rules which seem to have almost exponential increases with each trade in?

I personally tend to go with an Americas strategy and just attempt to hold the entry points.

Battlestar Galatica and Twilight Imperium are my favorites.

There is a BSG Board GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
Now to convince the girlfriend that despite the name, BSG is in fact more awesome than everything.

Twilight Imperium looks amazing as well. I wonder if that would be fun with 2 people. BSG sounds like you need 2+ because of the cylon/resource angle.

Hmm. I would think more INTJs would be into Chess. I guess my idea for a Chess discussion section wouldn't be good then?

I can rattle off a few that I enjoy. Now, I do like the popular games like Monopoly, Sorry!, Life, etc., but there were also a few more obscure ones I remember playing as a kid like Pay Day and Mystery Mansion. They were fairly entertaining too.

One of my favorites for two players is Shogi (Japanese Chess). It's more dynamic than standard Chess in that captured pieces return to the board for the capturing side.

I really enjoy playing Stratego. My friends and I used to bbq and drink while playing tournaments, the game gets really interesting once people lose their 'safe' modes. I also enjoy Axis & Allies, and Shogun.
