I am absolutely fascinated by subcultures, any and all. From ravers to Aristasians to Trekies to burning man regulars. Pagans, bikers - you name it, I'm interested. If anyone would like to submit a brief summary of a subculture of interest it would be most and i will try to submit some myself. I know this is nothing to do with intjs but I am hoping that like minded people will be interested in learning a thing or two about the world around us.

dunno if you've ever been to jersey. the towns around long branch (where i lived for awhile) are very narrow n/s and long e/w. all have a little beachfront. each town is a 'subculture' unto itself. the natives all told me i was crazy to wander around at night there.

Hah, just a few minutes after I wrote it too, Synamon!

I'm active in the skateboarding subculture, but more specifically, longboarding. A subculture within a subculture, if you will. Basically, the culture is very laid back. Sure you can show off and be crazy, but ultimately it's how cool you are that really matters. There's an intense distrust of any authority figure, primarily because we catch a lot of flak from most authority figures (primarily police, but occasionally other people). Hell, sometimes random people have stopped me and told me to knock it off or they'd call the cops. First I stopped, asked them their profession. Usually something unimportant. Then I dared them to call the cops -- aggressively dared them. Most people chicken out at that point. I know the laws (and the loopholes!) a lot better than most cops I've met, and a random civilian knows even less. I've seen many of my more experienced skateboarder friends chew out a cop because they had better legal knowledge regarding skateboarding.

Steampunk anyone?

Yeah, steampunk is quite fascinating, especially the people who build modern-day electronics in steampunk style, such as computers. Great exploration of the scientific culture in the 1800s, more specifically the Julean era (if that's even a time period, :p).

Darkness,

I love when people steampunk their computers. I've been fiddling around with jewelry steampunk jewelry ideas, and recently started gathering miscellaneous things to try my hand at steampunking a keyboard and see how it goes. I still haven't found just the right old typewriter to steal pieces from, but am hopeful I will find it soon.
I love the ethos and the draw the whole concept steampunk encompasses.

I am attracted to the lifestyle and ethos of traveling gypsy-jazz bands, such as those who wind up squatting in New Orleans. Bicycle-riding, train-hitching, punkish, with old style instruments, beautiful outfits, and sense of timelessness that I am deeply envious of.

For example,
Loose Marbles (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
_ Orkestra (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

Any threads for those with an almost physical repulsion to the convenient segregation we call culture?

I haven't abandoned the thread I just got a little distracted. If you like steampunk try To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. it doesn't get much traffic, which seems a shame so if anyone wants to give it a boost that'd be great. As for the travelling gypsy jazz band, what more can i say other than awesome - I love these sorts of things. I tried the Loose Marbles link and they look/sound brilliant - i will try orkestra in a bit.
