While looking at the ACS (American Chemical Society) Molecule of the week I had inspiration...

List your favorite molecules, tell why they're your favorite.

If you want, if you find an interesting molecule, tell that too :)

I'll post my favorites soon enough (there are so many to choose from!) and/or interesting molecules :)

I think I have enough people interested in chemistry around this neck of the woods to make this a decent thread...I think...

I'm going to say water - so simple, yet weird and very useful at the same time :)

Very common solvent if not the most common.

It's weird.

what other molecule is less dense in its solid phase? There are more ways it's weird too. Hm. actually here's a website on why water is weird I'm too lazy to sum it up. (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

It's also incredibly useful in making the food we eat and beverages we drink - and the alcohol ones aren't 100% EtOH because they have some percentage water.

You have can tons of fun with water. It's an amazing force in itself. Just watch water at very high pressures, waves, etc...

thegnat, I read some cheesy atom jokes in the paper today that I think you might enjoy (if you haven't heard them already lol) *;)

What does an atom call when its car breaks down?
A quantum mechanic.

Two atoms are walking down the street. The first atom says, "I think I lost an electron." The other atom says, "are you sure?" The first atom replies, "yes, I'm positive."

How do scientists count molecules?
They atom up.

What do atoms do on their day off?
Go fission.

These jokes were brought to you by Atom Sandler.

Nice jokes ;D

I think this website deserves some attention here

SiO2, though Ca3Al2Si3O12 is pretty cool too. :D SiO2 is the most common mineral on earth, and comes in many cool varieties.

Ferrocyanide has really cool crystals.

I think all these crystals are cool.

(I had a crystal growing kit way back when...)

!

So did I! :o I should grow crystals again at some point. What got to me when I was a little kid was those Smithsonian kits that said "Grow Emeralds" or "Grow Rubies" on them. I was always annoyed because I knew that those crystals weren't the right shape or hardness to be emeralds or rubies, and felt cheated. Even as a kid I overthought things.

Yeah! the Smitsonian ones! I had one that grew "amethyst" type crystals (because they were purple). Yeah I was the same way. But I thought making them was really cool and just having that product was awesome. Though I was a rock collector. And liked some geology. Heck I might take it as an elective. Or maybe I should talk to one of our profs here who grows crystals for nanotech. We used potassium ferrocyanide crystals in lab the other day. I thought they were purty.

Now this makes me want to grow crystals. Hmm... damn now I'm thinking like nanotech/inorganic/mat. sci. So many areas to choose from and/or combine!
