Piercings: Got them, love them, hate them? Any you find particularly attractive or unattractive? How do you respond to people with body or facial piercings?

Yeah, I'm dreading leaving college, because I think I might be expected to take some of them out (I have 9) for interviews.
Hopefully, though, after interviews I can sneak them back in. I have clear plastic retainers for some, and maybe those will be subtle enough.

I've never had a particular urge to get one, although a friend of mine who has far too much influence on me has at least got me considering sometimes. Oddly enough, I find them rather attractive on girls - not overdone, a couple facial piercings along with others elsewhere.

I pierced my tongue and lip before.. myself. Twas fun until I got bored with them and took them out. I'd probably have some still, except for the fact that they aren't very business-like (what deicruxified said).

I just realized that my posts could've been misinterpreted; I was saying that I do not like the piercings themselves, not the people who get piercings (though the fact that they disgust me repels me).

I've had a piercing in the past, but at night it fell out and the next morning my skin had already grown over it. Never got it back in. Too bad.
Piercings on other people.. well, some people look good with them and others don't. I don't like them in exterme places (genitalia..yuck >_<) other than that, sure, fine.

I think, in general, the purpose of genital piercings is sexual pleasure. I don't know how often those are done for aesthetic purposes.
I have 9 piercings. Obviously, I like them. Suprisingly, the only person who's said it looked like too many was my mother.

In my opinion, piercings only look good as long as you have the clothing styles to match, otherwise they just look stupid. I have a friend who has piercings all over her ear, but she dresses in conservative styles and doesn't do anything with her hair/face, so it just looks like it doesn't fit.
I have a couple of ear holes, but I don't use them often. My curls have an annoying habit of finding ways to get tangled in any earrings I bother wearing.

Do not have.
Do not want.
I am generally fond of piercings on other people. Tongue, lip, ears, nose, eyebrow (bar), and whatever else. The belly-button piercings tend to strike me as being a bit tacky, but that's only because I associate them with irritating teenage girls. I would say that the only piercings I'll go so far as to dislike are loops in the eyebrow. I don't dislike them strongly though.

Have 'em, like them on other people as it suits them (ie, some people just don't look right with them, but I couldn't say why). I have three in each ear lobe and one cartilage on one ear (it was the late 90s, what can I say). I had my belly button done, but took that out years ago. I had my tongue done, and that's my favorite. Regardless of what anyone wants to think, I got that one done for myself, because I'm a damn fidget and chewing gum all the time is neither possible, nor practical. I'd have done my eyebrow, but I'm a redhead, and my eyebrows are so light you can't really see them, so it would just look stupid. I don't want something up my nose. And now I do martial arts, so I don't even wear anything in my ears anymore (got tired of taking them out).

I have a nose piercing and that's what I did for my interviews as well. A bit more manageable than hiding 9, but it worked well and no one said anything after I got the jobs. In my current field it's not an issue, which I love. It's hilarious when the kindergarten students notice it and ask me what it is. I tell them that it's just like an earring but in my nose and they go, "eTo view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. gross!" I just smile and let it be. I'm sure their parents prefer that they think it's gross for now.

I just reread this and thought some people might misinterpret it. Highly unlikely, but still....
I find all of these things combined to be unattractive. I don't think these piercings by themselves are unattractive.
I also agree that the piercings should fit the person's personal style.
Edit to add: The only reason why I would like a nose piercing is simply because I think it would look interesting on me. It's also something that I want to do but wouldn't normally do.

I don't really see what you see in piercings. I guess it's all cultural. Are you guys attracted to the symbolism attached to them? Attracted to how they give the message you are somewhat special, is somewhat of a rebel, or whatever... I guess placement has a lot to say.

It's certainly cultural. I think having my nose pierced (it's the only one besides my ear piercings that shows) says something about me. In some sense, it's a rejection of mainstream beauty standards; of course, rejecting the mainstream in this sense only means hopping into another stream. But I like this stream better.
To me, a guy who has a piercing is quite attractive. Maybe it's a "rebel" thing, or maybe I'm just attracted to shiny things. But it's different. Generally, I like different and I don't go for stereotypically attractive men (I prefer Jakob Dylan to Brad Pitt).

It would be very, very hard to reject all that is unrational in life. Eating when you're not hungry is unrational (and maybe even irrational, since overdoing can lead to health problems), and I think many people do that. Arguably, if piercings make a person happy, they serve a purpose. If they attract (or repel) a certain type of person, they serve a purpose. My nose piercing makes me quite happy, so I wouldn't call it unrational, since it serves a purpose to me.
As for enhancing beauty, I think it does. Having something silver in the face area definitely makes one's eyes stand out. And, to toss out an old cliche, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I don't like an overwhelming number... but a single facial or ear piercing on a man is very attractive to me. I think it's beautiful.

This really becomes more of a question of where society ends and the individual begins. I think we all have different individual tendencies and that the outward expression of these tendencies is influenced by the culture in which we live (conforming or nonconforming behavior are both based on a social norm). Piercings come in a variety of sizes, colors and placements and are a part of a variety of traditions and rituals that attribute different meanings. Yes, having a piercing conveys a message, but it's intention is not necessarily an all encompassing "Look at me, I'm special. I'm just like every other rebel out there." For me, it's important to look at everything on a case by case basis no matter which pond the trend is from. If I can find meaning in it for myself, then that's good enough for me.

I don't have any right now..may get some in the future. I'm pretty indifferent to them, I guess. They can look quite nice on people of both genders if they know how to wear them. I think it's gross though when people have acne and facial piercings- just makes their faces even more cluttered and displeasing to look at.

Yes. I got my nose pierced the night before a funeral; my boyfriend of 4 years was killed this summer in a wreck with a drunk driver. His best friends and I went to a piercing place, and they got tattoos and I got my nose pierced. I had wanted to get it done anyway, but to get it done at that time in my life gave it significant meaning. It's a beautiful (to me) reminder of what we had. I want to remember how much that relationship shaped who I've become.
Even though I mentioned in an earlier post that I liked what my nose ring conveyed to other about me, that was incidental to the real reason I got it, which was as a sparkly little reminder to myself of our relationship and everything that it meant to me.

I pierced my nose while studying abroad in France. I had been thinking about getting it done for a while, and I have my aesthetic/message reasons too, but it also is a reminder of the many invaluable lessons and experiences from my year abroad.

I wasn't aware that nonverbal communication was useless. I find that dressing myself, such that people may come to understand some general things about me more quickly to be much more efficient than trying to explain everything to everyone all the time. I find anything that makes things easier on me to be entirely useful.
Plus what is with the repeated comparisons to something huge?

Plus what is with the repeated comparisons to something huge?We humans does non-verbal communication all the time wheter we like it or not. We can't really control what the outcome will be on the perceived side. Therefor why try surf the waves prejudice instead of just be.
I took the example a step further just to show my view on it, since I thought it didn't get through the right way. Just like the street racers trick out their "rides" to belong to something and to be indentified as a certain type by that. As I mentioned earlier I don't like any chains, rings and other such things. Because they're annoying and does not serve a purpose for me. Plus they may just get stuck somewhere and leave me hanging there. I won't trick out my vehicle either except with engine heater, auxiliary head lights, trailer hook and things like that. A spoiler kit will just stuck somewhere and fall off.
I don't care really what their appearce may be it's what they are that's interesting.

I used to have a tongue piercing. I miss it. So does my boyfriend. Why do I not still have it might ask...Well, my tongue heals extremely fast. One time the top ball unscrewed itself and I swallowed it. I took the piercing out to finish eating lunch, then went to the mall to get a replacement...and I couldn't get it back through. In less than an hour the damn thing had closed up. Later that week I got it re-pierced. Then shortly after that I had to have surgery and for whatever reason you can't have metal piercings in when going under anasthesia (sp). At that point I decided it wasn't worth it to get it re-pierced again, but I'm starting to change my mind.

I don't wear piercings to be edgy. I wear jewelry in them as I'd wear any other sort of accessory. Most jewelry is commonplace, and all accessories. However, that doesn't stop me from liking them. I like what *I* like, because *I* like it. If everyone else likes it too, fine, it's easier to find. If not, fine, I'll learn where to find what I want anyway. I don't care if I fit in or don't really. I'm a redhead with glasses and freckles....fitting in has never really been very possible. If I wanted to stick out, piercings would be unnecessary.

I have to say that piercings used to be abhorrent to me. Over the last few years, and with much influence from my somewhat-rebellious best friends, my tone has changed.
My 'interest', we shall say, has her ears pierced--lobes and cartilage--and is going to get her navel pierced when she turns 18 in March. She's also planning on getting a self-designed tattoo on her wrist around the same time. In the same way as piercings, I've come to terms with the tattoo because I believe she wants that.
Personally, I've found the thought of an earring or other piercing a little appealing. I don't like innumerable piercings or overdone piercings, but a few simple piercings are sexually appealing to my person.

Seems odd to dismiss one trend (BECAUSE it is a trend) in acceptance of another. "Naturally attractive" is a trend in and of itself; it's just not as widely popular. Maybe in ten years that, too, will be tired and commonplace and you will have to choose a different standard.
Yes, but it serves only a purpose for you and eventually those whom may like it too. It's not like food which you can spice to make it more enjoyable. Comparing piercings to tricking out a car is extreme. Tricking out a car costs thousands of dollars and generally requires maintenance; piercings cost less than a hundred and, after the initial healing period, require no maintenance.
Food may be fuel, yes, but my point still stands that eating when you don't need to is unrational. If you overate during the holidays just because food is tasty and you like it, you're being unrational.
And unless you're willing to actually claim that there's nothing in your life that you own or consume or do that is purposeless (since, here, you have indicated that a thing providing happiness for its owner is not a legitimate purpose), it's hypocrisy to dismiss piercings for that reason. If you don't like them, that's fine, it's your opinion. But it can't be for the reason that they are purposeless, unless you apply that standard to all areas of your life and do nothing simply for fun or enjoyment.

Believe it or not, there are people out there who do things because they like to do them and they really don't care what you or anyone else thinks about it.
I will never have piercings.
The only 'feelings' I've had toward piercings were that 'oh well' kind of manifestation in my head when an attractive girl announced that she was getting a lip piercing. I liked her, but that course of actions doesn't really do that much, no progress. Hurray, you have metal jutting out of your mouth... now what?.

Why don't you think it's possible to compare a human body with a car or a piercing with a big spoiler? And it don't have to cost more than a piercing. You can probably buy a fake exhaust pipe in chromed plastics for a dollar. Which you can glue on to your car's rear bumper. Because it looks nice, but what does it actually do? Can't that be compared to a chunk of metal in someones eyebrow? Everything is unrational in some way. Your TV set are if you don't currently watching it. You could continue like this for ever.
I might have things you consider useless but has a function for me. As I mentioned earlier I don't like decorations and ornaments either. They have no other use than just stand there doing nothing. A plant is a decoration but it's also a part of the photosynthesis. A plastic flower is not, therefor they're useless and unrational.
I just try and have tried to explain why I didn't like piercing or had any myself.
What other people do is up to them. Even though I don't understand why some like hurt themselves or eating poo. I'll guess that even you think so too.

wow! hit a nerve on this one. naturally attractive is not a trend it is natural, unmodified, and i like it best. social acceptance of pierceings and tatoo's have created a new subculture of "the emperor has no clothes" everybody saying its good doesnt necessarily make it so. when will you know that you might have gone too far? does that plate in your lip really bring out your features? show off your smile? make you a better kisser? a lot of people will be saying to themselves 20 years from now "what was i thinking". just because i dont like peirceings and tatoos it doesnt mean that i am down on the people that have them. i am down on the lack of forethought that should go along with any decision as big and as permanent as these. your peirceings and tatoos become an integral part of you and who you are as a person, are you sure that they are saying the right things? think before you ink. in response to slut poacher.. I agree with you. Small, simple piercings go away with ease, but my reason for never getting a tattoo is the sneaking feeling that nothing I like now will be as exciting 50 years from now.

I spent months and months designing my tattoos. Then, I had a consultation with my artist before we put anything on. I love my ink, and it's exactly what I want. It's not done yet, and I'm excited to get to that point (because it's going to be gorgeous).

(same goes for poking holes)I don't disagree with what you've said here, just the assumption that people do these things without thought. When you say it's trendy, you're basically saying that people with tattoos and piercings are just looking for attention however they can. If tattoos and piercings can be considered a trend, then natural beauty can be too. Afterall, those natural girls could easily be jumping on the natural bandwagon. How do you know if that's what they really want to present? Maybe they wanted to be tatted up and dye their hair purple and they just aren't because certain groups of people find it unattractive?
As far as piercings go, most of the time you can just take the jewelry out and everything will close up with basically no sign that you've been pierced. Piercings done with a piercing needle close because there is barely any damage done to the skin. Piercing guns obliterate the tissue and cause a lot of scarring and that's why those piercings don't close. And while I'm talking about it, nobody should ever use a piercing gun. Aside from the scarring and unnecessary pain and aftercare, piercing guns are not autoclave sterilized.
As far as my tattoos are concerned, I love them all (and I have quite a few since I'm sleeving both arms). I will always treasure because they represent not just what is physically drawn on my skin, but my life at the time that I got the work done. I have wonderful memories attached to all my tattoos and I don't regret a single one and don't anticipate regretting them even when my interest in the particular designs diminishes. Tattoos are more than just body art for me. They are an experience. They are a map of my life.

as an intj you have obviously put some thought into whatever work you have had done. the rest of the world are not intj's, and as such the percentages of them that have lept headlong into their modifications with no forethought whatsoever is pretty high. ask people what their modifications represent and you will find a lot of "i dunno's" among them. following the example of others without having first formed your own opinions is the perfect example of a "trendie". your tatoos are an experience and a map of your life. they say things about who you are, where have been, and what you represent. my scars say the same things of me, and they all have a story to tell. my kudos to anyone who has a story, thing or experience worthy of a tatoo. those who dont, i see as following fashion. but unlike new fashions your skin is the apparel and you are going to have wear it beyond next season. as for natural appearance being a trend. "WHAT?" nature and evolution are one in the same, and for something that has been going on since forever to be considered trendy seems a little off base to me.

Piercings: Got them, love them, hate them? Any you find particularly attractive or unattractive? How do you respond to people with body or facial piercings?
I just skimmed through the thread, saw some stuff I don't really care for... so I'll just reply to the original topic. :p
I don't care what people do or whatever, really. Some can be 'attractive', some not, I don't have a rule on that. I respond to people as they are, if I think they're being a poser, I might not like that aspect of them, but I'm not going to hold that one thing against them for all time.
Anyway.
I had a piercing once, pierced my eyebrow with a safety pin. It was interesting, I wanted to experience it, see what the fuss was about. I found it a bit annoying to have metal stuck in my face though, so I took it out after a while.

The tattoos themselves are the experience they represent. Tattoos for me aren't just art. It's about committing something to my flesh. It's about the whole ordeal of getting the tattoo done and it's a snapshot of what was going on in the time of my life that I got the work done. When I look at my tattoos, I don't just see tattoos. It brings to mind where I was working at the time, who my friends were, what I was interested in, etc. It's like looking through a photo album. Not all of my tattoos were well thought out and not all of them are quality work, but I love them all because they represent where I've been.
those who dont, i see as following fashion. but unlike new fashions your skin is the apparel and you are going to have wear it beyond next season. as for natural appearance being a trend. "WHAT?" nature and evolution are one in the same, and for something that has been going on since forever to be considered trendy seems a little off base to me.I really don't know how else to explain it to you. The "in" thing for a lot of people right now is to look natural. Plenty of people who were wearing piercings and dying their hair last year have cleaned up their look to appeal to folks who find their last look too outrageous. If you don't believe that natural can be a trend, flip through some beauty magazines. They come right out and confirm it. If someone makes a decision to go with a natural look because it's what is popular, that is following a trend.
It really sounds to me like you dislike the people I dislike. You just weren't careful enough about your wording for people to know that you differentiate between serious fans of body modification and losers who will do anything for attention. If you just call people trendy, you are really stepping on some toes. Those who are seriously into body mod (and you should be able to tell looking at them) do put thought into what they do.

The problem I have with this is the assumption that piercings necessarily have anything at all to do with being edgy or trendy. Believe it or not, there are people out there who do things because they like to do them and they really don't care what you or anyone else thinks about it.

For one thing, piercings and tattoos have been around since the beginning of time in many different forms and serving any different purposes. People do it now for many, many reasons that vary with the individual.
Your assumption that most people don't think about what they do to their body before they do it is somewhat offensive. It causes me to wonder if you actually know anyone with piercings or tattoos. Granted, there are people who do stupid things for the wrong reasons, maybe those are the only ones you've encountered.
With regard to your "emperor's new clothes" point, who are you to say what is good or bad for others to do with their bodies. Maybe you don't like tattoos or piercings. That's ok. I'll make a deal with you, if you don't like tattoos or piercings I won't make you get any.
How far is too far is really an individual thing. The idea that what you consider too far should be what everyone else considers too far is silly.

Skin is beautiful. To me, tattoos just cover it up and distract me, thus screwing it up. The way they distract me is hard to explain, I've written and re-written several sentences and can't quite clearly explain my thoughts. They simply are not something I find desirable. I don't mean to offend. That’s just what I think about tattoos. If tattoos are your thing, that’s fine with me. I just don’t like the looks of them.

Not making you get any was a way of saying that, even if you don't like them other people may find them to be valid and that's fine for them.
Chill out. I disagree with you, but you're taking my post way more personally than it was intended. I apologize for any perceived personal attack and I certainly wasn't trying to mock you.
With regard to your posts though, it seemed that you were saying that most, if not all, people with tattoos or piercings didn't put enough thought into making that decision and that you were basing this mostly on your own aesthetic preferences. The implication it seemed you were making was that if people took the time to think about it before getting tattoos or piercings they would have the same opinion about them that you do. I have an issue with that, not with your personal opinions of tattoos or piercings.

And you are right also.
Me, personally, find some tats and peircings to look awful (to me), and some look 'totally hot' (please forgive the term).
I've seen some women who were fairly covered in tattoos/piercings, which were nice looking themselves, and they also enhanced the beauty of the skin, at the same time.
Edit:
Though at the same time, there is something to be said for flawless, 'untouched' skin.

I dunno... I'm not sure what you mean by posers in the context of tattoos, etc.
If you mean people who don't freaking think about it before they get a tattoo, etc. then I'd have to say that I don't really think they suck... I think that they made a really bad decision that they'll probably regret. I've known some people who got some pretty fucking stupid tattoos (oh the stories I could tell you ), but the fact that they did something stupid to their body isn't really my problem. More than anything else, I'd say I just feel sorry for those people.
Although, it is possible to get tattoos removed and it's not as expensive or painful as it was even 5 years ago... so I guess even those people aren't without hope.
However, I do agree with you that people should think about it before they do something permanent (or even mostly permanent) to their bodies.

I had 2 eyebrow piercings, both ears pierced, centre of my lip pierced. Had to take them ALL out apart from the earrings (but they said I had to wear small gold studs, which is pointless as I wear either diamond or small gold hoops). This seriously pissed me off as it cost me a fair amount of money at that age.

I hate every type of piercing, although I'll tolerate piercing on the ear's of girls. They are unattractive, and when I see them anywhere other than the ears I am usually repulsed by them. The nose is kind of tolerable though, although I still don't like it. I try to avoid looking at people with excessive piercings too. I hate tattoos and nail polish too.

I have, in order of acquisition: lip, tongue, earlobes, and left cartilage. My lip and tongue ring were to satisfy my oral fixation, as i've seen somebody else say earlier in the thread. I used to always have a sore in my mouth where i was biting my lip or something. Since the piercings, that has not been an issue. Ladies also love the tongue piercing, and i must say having functionality with my decorations is nice ;D
My earlobes i got pierced at 8 gauge, and are now at a loose 4, but i don't plan on going any bigger. My cartilage, lip, and tongue are all 12, although a 10 will fit in my lip. I would wear one but i like to keep a ring with a smaller diameter in, and it's harder to find small diameter hoops the larger your gauge.
I also have a white (glows in black light) tattoo, because i figured it's something no job would ever notice or be able to disqualify me for.

That was probably me. I fidget with my tongue ring all the time, although I try to do it in an unobtrusive way when in certain places.
My face is too pale to really look decent with facial piercings. Plus, there's the whole martial arts thing, which would probably lead to great pain and injury for me. I don't even wear anything in my ear piercings anymore, I got tired of taking them out. I have considered another ear piercing though.

Yeah sometimes i just kinda silently press the bar between my teeth. In a comfortable setting, it's usually me clicking the bead rapidly against my teeth. The latter usually gets one of two reactions. People either yell at me, because they find the repetitive noise annoying, or they kick me and tell me to stop being a tease, haha.
