Anyone here know how to program in perl? If so, and you'd like to volunteer to help out the forum, please let me know. You may either respond to this thread or PM me.
I have a few small changes I would like to make to some of the forum programming but I'm getting stuck (I'm not a programmer). I would still like to do it myself so I'm not asking for someone to program anything for me. I would just like someone who can answer my questions or point me to a relevant source. I'm guessing that the things I need to do would be fairly simple, but I'm having trouble searching for good information since I don't know the proper names of things.
I know Perl, but this might not be the best gig for me. It's hard to teach long-distance over the internet, especially when I'm so busy in totally different languages at work...
In any case, you should probably provide the source and the baseline schema (plus any modifications) for whoever helps you out with it (I guess I might be able to, but if I do, it won't be the quickest turnaround).

Like I said, just small simple changes that shouldn't require in depth tutoring. And if it turns out to be more complex than I think it will be, I'm willing to do the reading myself once I'm pointed in the right direction. I just don't want to learn from the bottom up if it's only a couple of lines I need to change for a one time thing. Plus, I partially just want to know if what I want to do is feasible in the first place. I'd hate to waste my time learning all this only to find out what I wanted to do was unrealistic.
I'm being nagged at to get off the computer right now, but I'll write back to you later with a more clear explanation of what I want to do.
Even if you can't help me specifically with what I want to do and don't get back to me immediately, I still really appreciate the offer. :)

No problems Jezebel :)
No promises of course, but I have used perl, and have plenty of (non perl) programming experience, maybe it will be enough.
If anything, it will at least be interesting for me :)

Perl Cookbook is a great reference. Also, Programming Perl, Larry Wall (I think)
But, I always wonder if it is a good idea to make little tweaks. It's fun, but then they come out with the next release, and you can't easily upgrade. This happened to me on Bugzilla (also Perl).
On the other hand, my Bugzilla was better. And it was fun. So, good luck!!

This is something I considered. However, part of the fun of having a forum is being able to alter and customize it. It's one of the reasons I went with this particular forum software. The source is really easy to work with for a newb like me.
Both fortunately and unfortunately, this forum is growing a lot faster than I expected. I haven't even had time to get started on tweaking the programming. I figure I'll need a decent chunk of time to sit down and learn it, but all of the time I have for the forum gets poured into other maintenance and management activities. I plan on coming back to this after I get more people helping out with running the forum.
Thanks for the recommendations. I should probably pick up extra references anyway.
