Great Comic, or the Best Comic?

Seriously. I have some of it in front of me even now.

The best comic without a doubt.

Calvin: "I'm a genius, but I'm a misunderstood genius."
Hobbes: "What's misunderstood about you?"
Calvin: "Nobody thinks I'm a genius."

Possibly the best, coming up close would be baby blues. Now, if one would to classify Calvin, would he be an intj?

I will settle for "Great Comic" because I only have a superficial knowledge of comics. To say that it was the best comic carries a connotation that I am familiar with other comics. This is not the case. The only other comic I ever read consistently was The Far Side, which I read when I was a teen.

I've seen him classified as such elsewhere. The most I can say is that I can't think of another type that fits better.

I would guess ENTP. Crazy plans and all. But imaginary friend does sound INFP-ish.

Crazy plans you say? I'd say intj because calvin's forever into the whole world domination stuff :P

The best! I found an unofficial blog and subscribed to it just so I can get my daily dose of Calvin at work. Even though I already have all books in Portuguese and in the process of collecting them in English now.

I used to draw him on my letters whenever I wrote to my friends and family...:cheesy:

I bought a huge C&H book for my girlfriend last year. It's not The Best -I don't know what is-, but the writing is wonderful and the drawing.. well, shit. That easily puts any comic artist to shame.

I've found The Far Side to be my favorite, but that may be because I was introduced to Calvin at a much, much later date by a former love interest. He collected C&H books and he was only missing one (Scientific Progress Goes "Boink"), which I gave to him signed by Bill Watterson on his 17th birthday. So C&H holds a special place in my heart as related to the best gift I've currently given.

It's the best comic, without a doubt. ;D I quote it constantly, and it's one of my life's greatest ambitions to build some snowmen like Calvin's. (I wanted to this winter, but there was never enough snow).

"Ms. Wormwood, I'm a fierce advocate of the separation of church and state. Nevertheless, I feel the need for spiritual guidance as I face the day's trials. Therefore, I was wondering if I could strip down, smear myself with paste, and set fire to this little effigy of you in a non-denominational sort of way." - Calvin

You've just got to love any six-year-old kid who would ask that.

But imaginary friend does sound INFP-ish.

Well, I had an imaginary friend, so that doesn't prove anything. I could buy INFP, though. The main point against it is that he is extraordinarily egocentric. That is, understanding the position of others does not seem to occur to him at all.

Well, he's also a child, if I recall my education in child mental development from years, and years, and years ago, it's around Calvin's age when kids start learning to understand other people's needs. Most young children are pretty egocentric, regardless of type.

Calvin & Hobbes is a truly great comic which belongs in the proverbial Hall of Comics Book Fame. Whether or not its the best is up to the eye of the beholder. I personally could not say if either C&H or The Far Side was better.

Calvin is an INFP. Even typelogic uses him as an example:

INFPs never seem to lose their sense of wonder. One might say they see life through rose-colored glasses. It's as though they live at the edge of a looking-glass world where mundane objects come to life, where flora and fauna take on near-human qualities.

INFP children often exhibit this in a 'Calvin and Hobbes' fashion, switching from reality to fantasy and back again. With few exceptions, it is the NF child who readily develops imaginary playmates (as with Anne of Green Gables's "bookcase girlfriend"--her own reflection) and whose stuffed animals come to life like the Velveteen Rabbit and the Skin Horse:.

I always thought he was an infp

Hrm... would an INFP be motivated to construct a transmogrifier? Not saying that's impossible... but I just think of Calvin as an NT. He likes to conquer, challenge, and space out.

All my stuffed animals were alive when I was a kid. My school building was a large submersible with underwater walkways. I still have a pretty intense imaginary life... and a 75% T by Humanmetrics standards.

For whatever that's worth. Considering the fact that we're discussing a cartoon character, and that, IMO, it's largely moot to try to firmly type kids, they're often still so labile.

I agree with this.

I think a strong case could be made for either type, but the fact that he is a fictional child makes it doubly impossible to nail it down absolutely.

I saw that, but typelogic is not an authoritative reference we have to defer to.

The Far Side makes me laugh out loud, Calvin and Hobbes only makes me chuckle so I voted great, not the best. Peanuts is a sentimental favorite of mine and C&H reminds me of it.

The transmogrifier was a cardboard box. He wasn't motivated to construct it, he was happy to let his imagination do all the work for him.

He likes to conquer, challenge, and space out.

He likes to do all this in imagination land, not the real world.

Based on that description then I am an INFP, so I'd hardly use at as definitive classification of Calvin. I live(d) in a completely imaginary world, phasing back to reality only when it demanded attention. I still keep my promises to inanimate objects.

I loved Calvin and Hobbes and reading it in the Saturday comics growing up was one of the highlights of my childhood. While I was not as troublesome as Calvin, I did envy him his Hobbes. Far Side was a close tie, but even though I loved insects, tigers win hands down.

*sigh*

Well, he's what, seven? Calvin's parents know better than to let him have a soldering iron.

Are you arguing against him being an NT, or for? My dad used to put large appliance boxes in the garage for me to play in. Kept me entertained for hours. :)

Maybe... and pardon me if I'm being too limiting... an NF would be more likely to make the box into a character, or a home, instead of a vehicle or device..?

He likes to do all this in imagination land, not the real world.

I've always done muuuch better stuff in my mind than in reality. Especially when it comes to things along the lines of constructing transmogrifiers and spaceships.

This is the SPITTING IMAGE of my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Blackburn. Who [coincidentally???] retired the next year. My mother has always said I was the one who officially pushed her past burnout. I am an INTJ. QED!

and that sounds very infp to me. I never had imaginary playmates. I never played with dolls or stuffed animals. I don't doubt you are a T but maybe you also have a healthy infp inner child. I don't see why an infp would have a problem imagining themselves with a transmogrifier... I mean, they say most writers are infp right, there's plenty of science fiction written by the infp. NF's are just as capable of having an edge as anyone else.

Safe bet that my F is like an arm that I do still have, but haven't used in years, to the point where it's atrophied. I'm sure when I was a kid, I had all kinds of potential strengths swirling around in me - through nature/nurture I came to use the ones that suited me best and disregard the others when it came to growing up & dealing with catalysts. I seem to be slowly forming a goal now of regaining at least some knowledge of my lesser-used tools, if not skill. T/F is my least flexible point.

Anyway, this goes back to my earlier thing about trying to firmly type people during childhood.

Really not! Hobbes often say What your mom will think of that!? What the santa claus will think of this!? And he like it when the girl kiss it and so on..

I really like this comic book I have some myself and still read it even today. Best comic book for me :D

I have to go with the Far Side as my all time favorite.
But Calvin and Hobbes come in a close second...

Calvin is only second to Bucky for his sarcasm... although I find Bucky a little too abrasive at times. For all the antisocial quirks of his, I still find Calvin very endearing. Their counterparts Satchel and Hobbes are INFP and INTJ respectively, I think.

Best in my opinion. Watterson took being funny a lot more seriously than most other cartoonists (before or since in my opinion). Not that I've studied it out that much, but I have read some of his discussions on things related to the comic strip world. Pretty consistently funny, in contrast with my second favorite, Garfield....which really isn't that funny.

The Far Side was unsurpassed for sheer comic brilliance.
Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes come in a close second.
Dilbert, for anyone who has worked in a large dysfunctional company, is absolutely required reading.

The other day I saw an episode of Family Guy where Stewie said "Oooo, I've gotta tell my friend about this." Then it shows that his friend is Calvin lol.
