I remember in junior high, my biology teacher wanted to put into perspective how much one million looked like. She printed single sheets of paper with X's on them (around 2500 on each sheet) and it took roughly 400 sheets to print them all. She then taped each sheet, one on top of the other, and rolled it out in the halls of the school. As I remember, it was just shy of 400 feet and wrapped around several halls and down a flight of stairs... it really put things into perspective.
And to complicate matters, we [students] weren't aware that it was 1 million X's initially. We had to gather in teams and first count how many X's were on each sheet, count the number of sheets, and then give a rough estimate of how many we thought there were. I recall some deviations being around a quarter of a million off.

Wow, nice perspective. This does great wonders for the human mind, as I have read (and experienced it firsthand) that humans are terrible at comprehending huge numbers like that. Thanks for the article.
