I've seen some threads here related to INTJ and the general arts, but I want to direct a topic specifically to the INTJs who take up an interest in film production (or even general multimedia production). I studied film and multimedia production for about 5 years, and rarely have I come across any NT in the field with similar interests. And even then, most of those folks were on the equipment engineering/maintenance end of things, rather than the creative end of the business.

But I know there are some of you out there. ;)

If you are out there, what are your particular interests in the production field (i.e. directing, producing, acting, editing, camerawork, sound production, etc.)? What do you find are some of your advantages or disadvantages as an INTJ filmmaker?

I really wanted to go to UT for their film school, but I haven't had the opportunity to work with film before, so I was too nervous to throw myself into a classroom of people who already knew what they were doing.

I started writing scripts in junior high when I was doing a project for an English class. When it was presented to the class, everyone was crying from laughing so hard, and the same goes for what I've presented since. I really enjoy character development, and I think I would adore cinematography and working as a director and screenwriter. I get very nervous when I act, and I'm not naturally an expressive person, so it feels a bit off.

As far as the disadvantages I've experienced, I'm not as good at writing in expressions one should portray.. I can write out a situation and lines, but the person portraying the character has to fill it out more than I think he/she ought.
Furthermore, I hate to seem incompetent and failure is never an option for me, so actually getting into the field might not happen for me unless I accept that I really, really need to get more experience and probably make a lot of horrendous mistakes.

It's not my career but...

In uni I took a media course just for fun... (well to challenge myself in acting because I sucked so much). Our little film we produced ended up getting us all As or A+s.....

My input was as follows:
I mostly was responsible for generating the challenging idea to the topic (how to take it on, and turn it on its head... I made it more surreal). I helped write the script as well.
I acted a little, but I sucked and had a rather an extra type or role in it.

It was great fun, but I still suck at acting! :)

I'm currently studying media, but I'm starting film class later on this year in the next semister. It's my major.

i have study cinema, did some short movies, and also have done a tv show.. I like most of the jobs behind cinema and i have done directing, producing, acting, editing, camerawork. I like to do most of the work myself cause the people i work with dont really understand my ideas. The reason is that im very creative and when u work with other people and u want to explain them a shot that dont exist or that they never see they have dificulties to imagine it and do it. so.. when i do movies i try to always be there to supervise. thoses are the mains difficulties for me and for acting its only for role that dont require emotions like terminator otherwise i hire someone else. Also my father is a was a popular movie maker in my country the first dolby surond production here was made by him back in the time i think hes intp or meabe j..

Did it for awhile. Had a TV show on the air of short, sketch comedy bits. Did some music videos and such. I usually wrote or manned the camera or acted.

I'd like to get back into it eventually, but I just don't have it in me to organize people and whatnot for it. I don't want to produce, I just want to write, and act occasionally.

I would love to get into working full-time with film mainly Doc filmmaking. I created a 10 min short Doc on a aboriginal burial ground in my area. I haven't quite finished it, so I am leery about doing a screening, in my cities local short documentary film fest.
I mainly love directing and editing. The amount of time and energy it takes, it's hard to pursue as a hobby, you pretty much need to make it your life to get anything done. And well it doesn't pay the bills so making it your life isn't always feasible.
I have thought about film school but cannot justify spending the money on things I could learn myself or through my local film-makers association.
In the mean-time I mainly edit short little pieces, to hone my editing skills.

I've only been working in films since May 2008. I've worked in the art dept for 3 films and have done other TV work. I was a PA/grip at The National Republican Convention in Saint Paul. I'd like to stay in the art dept and work towards art direction. I think a couple of more films and I should be ready to be the art director for small projects.

I enjoy working in the art dept because I get to use my creative side. I feel working in films really fits well with being an INTJ. I usually don't like working in groups, but I get along with people in film so well that they're like family. There are also lots of opportunities where I work alone. We work long and hard hours. We're asked to be creative and think outside of the box. Most times, we'll build something that ends up not working and have to come up with an alternative that will work.

Advantages of being an INTJ in film: People who work in films can be real assholes. We don't take it personal. Manage our time well. Focused on getting the job done.

Disadvantages: One of the disadvantages of being an INTJ is how quiet and inside my head I can be. I don't always speak up. I like to observe and think of how I'd do a task differently. A couple of more films and I'll be ready to lead. I'll be good at it because I can handle stress well and keep calm. I'm a perfectionist and if time allowed it, I could tweak a project for hours. Most common phrase in the art dept, "Fuck it."

Most of my friends that I've worked with are INFP or ENFPs. I don't think there are an S types, but I wouldn't really know. My ex-boyfriend directs, edits, writes and does special effects make up. He's an ENTJ. I'm not exactly sure what his friend does, but he was Al Franken's personal assistant and is an INTJ. His other friend produces, he's ENFJ I think.
