25 Albums That Changed My Life
Think of 25 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life... dug into your soul. The ones that you know backwards, forwards, up, and down, and are now a part of you. I've done them in no particular order.
This is harder than 25 songs, because it means that the entire album was something special to you in your life - and now that we purchase mp3 & 4s, we seldom do entire albums anymore! Nonetheless, here is my list:
1. Joshua Tree - U2
2. Greatest Hits - Aretha Franklin
3. Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder
4. Toto IV - Toto
5. Songs from the Big Chair - Tears for Fears

7. Speaking in Tongues - Talking Heads
8. Sharpen Your Teeth - Ugly Casanova
9. Cosmic Thing - B-52s
10. The Golden Age of Wireless - Thomas Dolby

25. Concert for George soundtrack
I'll try to include a short description as to why I chose each album.
1. Slipknot - Slipknot (The first metal sound to ever hit my ears)
2. Offspring - Americana (The CD I ever borrowed from my local library, rocked my world)
3. Adele - 19 (Quite recent, got me into solo artists with inspirational lyrics)
4. Armor For Sleep - Dream To Make Believe (Helped my mind get some peace through stuff)
5. Black Sun Empire - Cruel & Unusual (My first REAL dark/moody drum and bass album, so gooood)

8. Gorillaz - Gorillaz (Genius music +1)
9. Lamb Of God - Ashes Of The Wake (Got my mind set into metal when I was 15)
10. The Fray - Reason (Opened me up into good rock/indie)

12. Holst - The Planets (Widened my musical taste phenomenally)
13. Vanessa Mae - The Ultimate (Inspired me to learn violin (I think half the world was as well))
14, Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season (They've gone through shit, but this album is the result, great stuff)
15. Metallica - Death Magnetic (My first Metallica album, couldn't put it down for weeks)
16. Tchaikovsky - Complete works for Piano & Orchestra (Simply amazing)
17. Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli (My headbanging muscles increased 200%)
18. Apocalyptica - Worlds Collide (Showed me more instruments can be played in a metal band)
19. Wolf - Ravenous (Even old style classics can come back to life)
20. Noisettes - Whats The Time Mr Wolf (Great sound, really nice rock/pop/indie)
21. Paramore - EVERYTHING (Haley.. yum)

23. Sabrepulse - Turbo City (My first 8-bit DnB solo artist, mind-boggling)
24. As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us (Really filled the gap and brought me back to metal when I was slacking off)
25. FF7 - Voices of the Lifestream (Remix) (Showed me even remixed music can be an utter delight, opened me up to the gaming music scene and their remixes)
Few.. I'm one of those rare people that enjoy albums, not single songs. Well, with MGMT it was one song but the rest was nice to listen to.

In no particular order...
1. Unearth – The Oncoming Storm (The album that got me into good music, and made me a metalhead. I listen to much better stuff today though, but this holds a special place for bringing me there.)
2. Frank Zappa – Civilization Phaze III (My mind turned to mush, solidified, turned to mush, solidified, turned to mush, and solidified more solidly than before I started after the first time I listened to this album.)
3. Opeth – Damnation (The first album to make my eyes water; I’ve been much more attuned to emotion in music ever since.)
4. Motorhead – Inferno (This made me realize I had seasonal affective disorder, by breaking me out of it during the spring I listened to it the first time.)
5. Electric Eel Shock – Beat Me (Made me realize just how much fun can be had with music.)
6. Igor Stravinsky – The Rite of Spring (I really sat down and JUST LISTENED. It gave me enough compositional ideas to last years.)
7. Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Yanqui U.X.O. (Listening to this album with studio monitor headphones while standing at the absolute front of a ferry on the Hudson River at night filled me with sadness and happiness at the same time, and I envision that every time I listen to the song “Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls.”)
8. Taake – Hordalands Dødskvad (Made me realize that with the right mindset, anything can be calming.)
9. The Lord Weird Slough Feg – Traveller (Despite its lyrics being extremely far-fetched, I identified with this main character a lot. The conviction, delivery, catchiness, and heaviness rocketed it into the pantheon of my favorite music, and Slough Feg remains to this day one of my favorite bands ever.)
10. See You Next Tuesday – See You Next Tuesday (Made me a masochist for dissonance.)
11. Mega Man X5 Soundtrack (Laid the foundation for what was yet to come.)
12. Burzum – Det Som Engang Var (Upped my tolerance for bad production by leaps and bounds, and made me realize that there can be a dichotomy between someone’s personality and someone’s art.)
13. SikTh – The Trees Are Dead and Dried Out… Wait for Something Wild (Completely blew me away and set me on a perennial quest for stuff like it; I still haven’t found anything.)
14. Nevermore – This Godless Endeavor (Possibly my favorite straight-out METAL album in existence, it provided me with plenty of isolation from my idiotic peers in school and I love it to this day. The phrase “godless endeavor” has been used on many of my papers, with good results.)
15. Sunn O))) – Black One (This is music? Yes it is. Anything and everything is now music.)
16. Worship – Dooom (If I walk around and listen to this, my walking slows down considerably. I also feel heavier. I can now comprehend the physical effect that music can have. Also, arguably some of the saddest music I have ever heard.)
17. Sleep – Dopesmoker (Makes me feel like a more primitive organism than I am, when I listen to it. When I don’t, I recognize that humans are just animals, more than I realized before.)
18. Steely Dan – Can’t Buy a Thrill (Helped me vent my anger through tough times, helped me relax in relaxing times.)
19. Shade Empire – Zero Nexus (The misanthropy engulfed me and spat me out after I listened. I’ve never been quite the same, but I don’t know exactly how I changed. It’s for the better though.)
20. Persuader – Evolution Purgatory (Always, always, always motivates me.)
21. Slayer – Reign in Blood (Another foundation-building album. This introduced chromaticism into my life to a much higher degree than before. However, I don’t listen to Slayer much nowadays… Chromaticism however, is here to stay.)
22. Katatonia – Dance of December Souls (The absolutely oozing negativity only strengthens my determination whenever I hear it.)
23. Hellacaust – Disgust (The first and only album so far to actually make my headaches worse.)
24. Exmortus – In Hatred’s Flame (For a quick, strong burst of motivation when nothing else cuts it. I’ve been turning back to this album a lot for that, ever since I got it.)
25. Tom Lehrer – The Remains of Tom Lehrer (Made me stop trivializing lyrics to a ridiculous extent. They’re still less important than the music, but I know they matter.)

Have you tried Spotify? I just registered. There is a lot of stuff there but there's more of what I was looking for that they didn't have. Still, it's interesting and it's free.

No, I will have to look at that.
I am VERY excited in that I used Shazam on my iPhone for the first time the other day and it worked on something that I thought was new and perhaps obscure.
This from Digital Noise of cnet.com:
The concept behind Shazam is simple: whenever you hear a song playing and can't identify it--on the car radio, at a friend's house, at a bar--you activate the Shazam application on your mobile phone. It "listens" to the song for about 30 seconds, then sends a text message to your phone identifying the artist and title. Shazam's database contains audio fingerprints for nearly 5 million songs, so there's a pretty good chance of a positive ID. However, closing the loop with an actual purchase was hard--you had to tag the song, then consult a Web site to see your tagged item, then go to another service (such as iTunes) to buy it.

Most likely destined to be a work in progress (dude, 25?!), but I might as well start:
1. House of Krazees - Head Trauma: The musical culmination of one of my all time favorite underground rap groups, and the last full LP they made before going separate ways and eventually regressing under the influence of commercialism.
2. Natas - Life after Death
3. Jack Bruce - Harmony Row
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors
5. Cream - Disraeli Gears
6. Insane Clown Posse - The Great Milenko: ICP's big international breakthrough album which I loved to death for many years and which brought me into contact with many great underground acts from the Detroit/Michigan area (including House of Krazees). While I'd now list other (earlier) albums of theirs (Carnival of Carnage, Beverly Kills and Ringmaster) as easily superior to this, historically it is far more significant to me.
7. The Police - Outlandos d'Amour
8. Band of Gypsys - Band of Gypsys (live at the Filmore East)
9. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
10. Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash
11. Mr. Doctor - Setripn' Bloccstyle
12. Brotha Lynch Hung - Season of da Siccness
13. Fiona Apple - When the Pawn..
14. Mr. Lif - Emergency Rations
15. HaLFBrEEd - kontamiNATION
16. HaLFBrEEd/F.R.Eeze/Y.U.G. - Rage of the Plague
17. Twiztid - Mostasteless
18. The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre
19. Jack Bruce - Harmony Row
20. Level Jumpers - The Red Pyramid
21. Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
22. Raekwon/Ghostface - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
23. Necro - Gory Days
24. KoRn - Follow the Leader
25. Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane

I realized this morning that I forgot to put Dookie by Green Day on there, which was maybe THE most important album for the 12 year old me in terms of steering me in the right direction from then on.
And also, the Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs, which I very much doubt I could live without.

How do you come up with 25 albums? I can only list songs. Very few albums stick out in my mind as being notable (I never really get into bands/artists). Some that I can think of:
1. The Wall - Pink Floyd
2. Life for Rent - Dido
3. Stripped - Christina Aguilera (but not all songs on it, I skip some)
4. 52nd Street - Billy Joel
5. An Innocent Man - Billy Joel
6. The Nylon Curtain - Billy Joel
7. The Bridge - Billy Joel
8. The Stranger - Billy Joel
9. Greatest Hits Vol. I&II - Billy Joel
10. Greatest Hits - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
11. Black Celebration - Depeche Mode
12. Karaoke Superstars - Superchick (really bad music, overall, but it's so upbeat that it was great during a dark period...ignoring the religious stuff, lol)
13. Greatest Hits 1974-1978 - Steve Miller Band
14. River of Dreams - Billy Joel
15. Finally Woken - Jem (not all songs)
16. Music - Madonna
17. Fallen - Evanescence (important one)
18. Abba Gold - Abba

In no particular order:
* The Pixies - Surfa Rosa & Come on Pilgrim
In 2001 I used to listen to this in my dads workshop while I was keeping out the way of the rest of the family. I was building a guitar, and the drum intro from the first song of that album immediately brings back that glorious summer! :)
* Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
In 2001, probably the first time I got really depressed. Over Christmas I was feeling particularly low, was destined to stay in my room all Christmas day, after waking with a terrible hangover. Put this album on right loud, and cheered up no end.
* Thom Yorke - The Eraser
2006 - I used to listen to this on the commute back from work on the train whilst I was still at uni; thinking, I could get used to this.
* Abba - Abba Gold (!?)
1990 - parents bought a CD player and started buying many CD's. I used to sit for hours listening on some huge sony headphones, and this is the most memorable music from that period which probably hooked me on music.
* Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Probably 2004 - I had an 'episode' at the end of the uni year, where I stayed in my room like a hermit, not sleeping for days. Riverman brought me out of it.
* Architecture in Helsinki - Fingers Crossed
I got this in 2005 (I think), but there is a song called Spring 2008, which made me think that something good was gonna happen then. In spring 2008 I found INTJf and began to grow up / sort my life out.
* Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Helped quite a bit with my anxiety attacks. I'm mega laid back now, and this is the kind of music I imagine to help keep me calm.
* Zero 7 - Simple things
This is a motivating album, and when I listen to it it really reminds me to make sure that I actually achieve something with my life.
* Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
This album made me feel safe and content. Or more precisely, up until 1m16s in, I nearly had a panic attack, and then all was well. Smiles all round. ::)
* Led Zeppelin - I
This album is full of energy and optimism. It was quite motivating, and Led Zep being a band formed specifically from the best members the management could find, really does reflect in the music. They were at the top of their game. The best. A seemingly effortless album. It made me want to be like that in something.
* Radiohead - OK Computer
From this and just about every other Radiohead album since, I learned that you just cannot judge what people are capable of creating. Just look at Thom Yorke. He could be a tramp from looking at him! :) Funny thing is too, that my mum bought it by accident and tried to give me it in 1997, and I turned my nose up at it. Took me until 1999 to realise I'd been an idiot!
Led Zeppelin - IV
This album made me buy a guitar and start learning seriously. And now my guitars are the most sentimental possessions I have.
Neil Young - Harvest
This album gave me an idea of the kind of life I'd like to live when I retire, and made me ponder what I'd be like when I'm 24. I'm 25 now, and yes I do feel like an old man.
N.E.R.D. - Fly or Die
This album made me realise that good music is good music, and that I should really listen to more genres and stop being a classic rock snob.
* Crowded House - Recurring Dream
I think my mum was playing this album the first time I got really depressed. I remember it lucidly. I was playing WipeOut on a Playstation in our living room, and reading an X-Files inspired magazine I used to subscribe to. I read that the world was going to end in 2012, and there was plausible evidence too (I believed it). I started thinking that everything was shit - and 'four seasons in one day was playing'. That song instantly drags me down.
*Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55
Got me a bit obsessed with sophisticated, intelligent sounding French culture.
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
Take your time, don't be swayed by what everyone else seems to be doing. It'll all be alright in the end.
Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins
Listening to this the first time, I thought that if this were to come on in a night club, I might actually... dance!! This is probably one of the funkiest albums I like listening to.
* Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Do what you want Tom, don't pay any attention to anyone who says you're 24 not 74.
Bjork - Debut
This is one of those where I learnt not to judge so much. You know my mum instantly goes "BJORK?? ARE YOU MAD???" Like I'm some sort of fucking loon. Made me realise I have grown apart from my family / roots.
Tindersticks - Tindersticks II
I can see little twinkly stars,
like Christmas tree lights in faraway windows.
Rings of brightly coloured rocks
floating around orange and mustard planets.
I can see huge tiger striped fishes
chasing tiny blue and yellow dashes,
all tails and fins and bubbles.
I'd look at the grey house opposite, and close the curtains.
(How could this not have an effect?).
* The Shins - Chutes too Narrow
I was listening to this when I read via facebook that a childhood school friend had died. It was the type of music that he would have liked, I thought.
* Jeff Buckley - Grace
What a waste.
* Radiohead - Amnesiac
Something struck from these lyrics, that the people supposedly in charge / lead, just have as little clue about what to do as the rest of. Hypocritical, power hungry, weak and corrupt. I really ought to voice my opinions more!?
* Pulp - Different Class
Crikey, my local city Sheffield is actually interesting, or at least Jarvis Cocker does a good job of making it sound intriguing.
tp6626 added to this post, 4 minutes and 23 seconds later...
Oh, and if anyone wants to check out just one of the above, I'd recommend Tindersticks. They're from Nottingham (another city near me), but it's quite amazing for me to believe that. They sound like an accomplished French chamber / lounge / jazz act. :)

Wow, I remember albums, but no - none of them changed my life. I don't think there's ever been a single compilation of music where I liked all of it, at least not at the same time. Well maybe Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, but I'd have to be in that mood.

So, just to give a bit more data, I have experienced albums as opening a door to a different way of hearing or seeing things or knowing. Have you never had that kind of encounter with an album?
