Rudy, I like your quote a lot.

Thanks.

The short story behind the quote, if you're curious, is that this gentleman, Robert G. Ingersoll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_G._Ingersoll) was called "The Great Agnostic" of the later 19th century. He was a very popular speaker, and his voice was heard by more people in America than anyone else at the time.

In any case, the Republican Party of Illinois (at that point, the Republican Party was still primarily defined as the anti-slavery party) offered him the nomination for governorship of Illinois, if he would agree to keep his views on religion quiet. His response was:

"Good-by, gentlemen! I am not asking to be Governor of Illinois ... I have in my composition that which I have declared to the world as my views upon religion. My position I would not, under any circumstances, not even for my life, seem to renounce. I would rather refuse to be President of the United States than to do so. My religious belief is my own. It belongs to me, not to the State of Illinois. I would not smother one sentiment of my heart to be the Emperor of the round world."

Anyone who is interested in freethought should check out his works. It's all available free online. Here is a good one to start with:

At A Child's Grave (http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/ingsabsup.htm#CHILD)

If you're not interested, that's fine.

«Свету ли провалиться, или вот мне чаю не пить? Я скажу, что свету провалиться, а чтоб мне чай всегда пить.»

I've read the anti-signature arguments and I understand them, but it'd still be nice to see other users' favorite quotes (mind blurbs, non-sequiturs, etc.). Mine is usually "Vit la vie, rêve la vie, souffre la vie." I can't imagine there being anything so important that I would need to append it to every single post I make. I'm just not attached to something enough to want to repeat it 3500+ times. Well, nothing except my avatar, it's all the personal imprint I desire. :)

I don't like signatures either. I never read them and find they just look tacky. Especially when people add graphics or colors or emoticons or what have you.

But, if I had to pick,
This one because it's funny to have at the end of a post:

"Arguments are to be avoided, they are always vulgar and often convincing" ~ Oscare Wilde

One from Albert Camus because I like him:

"Seeking what is true is not seeking what is desirable."

And, one from the Bible:

I wouldn't use it even if it was allowed, for three reasons:

1) The fact that a fixed text is important enough to appear each time I say anything means that I have very little to say. Even worse if it is a quotation, which would be a declaration of inferiority towards some authority.

2) It messes up the layout of the post, making it less readable.

3) It gives a hard time to those who have not fast internet lines. I had to use a 56k for a lot of time after faster lines became common and it is unpleasant when you have to choose between blocking all images (and perhaps missing something useful) or getting bogged down by junk.

Oh man, I can't sit throught Mass with a straight face anymore, and it's all because of this facebook group which is dedicated to hating Nickelback. The bad grammar makes it all the more humourous.

Nickelback is the worst band of all time. They can suck on my left nut. They are the only band that can make a song by singing "OoOoOoO Oh God Yeah..." and by rhyming the word "rockstar" with obvious lyrics like "cigar" and "fancy cars"

Their terrible lyrics combined with cloned chords makes them the worst band ever. "..and we'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eeeeeat." what the hell is that?

There have got to be 69,000 people on Facebook that think Nickelback sucks, so join us in hating Nickelback.

Thank you.

WWJD? Hate Nickelback...

Notable Quotes:

"GOOD LUCK FINDIN 69000 NICKELBACK H8RS, CAUSE THERE AINT THAT MANY, ONLY U DOUCHES"
--Tory Kurtis Moore (Lincoln High School)

"Tory Kurtis Moore must be a big Nickelback fan, so big that he fantasizes about Chad Kroeger. Torys ultimate fantasy is where he's the alter boy and Chad Kroeger as the Priest. Tory loves the part where Chad sticks the holy cross in his ass while he's saying "Forgive me father for I have sin!!!". Then to finish it off, Chad drops cumbuckets on Torys face saying " Amen oh god yeah!!!"
--Eric Clements (Upper Arlington High School) in response to Tory Kurtis Moore's comment

it'd probably be what ever quote i felt like most.

probably either: "what you think of me is none of my business."
or
"i hope when you think of me years down the line you can't find one good thing to say."
or
"have humility or be humiliated."

then maybe a little picture of something or another.

My high school had a tradition (and it's probably not unique, either), but, for Senior Day every year, the Junior class would come up with a little "saying" for each of the Seniors and present them attached to a little stuffed animal. In any event, mine could not have been more appropriate, and hence I use it frequently:

"Things would have been different had I been at the Creation".
