Any jazz fans here?

I'm more into the classical jazz, such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald,
John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Count Basie, etc.

Modern singers I like Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, Norah Jones.

Feel free to exchange news/ information on the jazz players you like here.:lovestruck:

I would not have said Sinatra was Jazz, more a swinger.

But I love it, I have a fifth of my music as Jazz cd's or downloads. Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Buble are my favourites.

The greatest Jazz song has to be "Windmills of your mind" I play 2 or 3 versions at the same time from different programs and they all sound fantastic mixed, different tempo, voices, Heaven.

Being primarily a blues guy myself I tend towards jazz players with a more bluesy touch. My favourite instrument is the Hammond B3 organ, thanks to Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff and Jack McDuff. Guitar players would be Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Martin Taylor, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. These instrumentalists are the ones who can say something with their music that I can understand, hope that makes sense

Vocals-wise I prefer Billie Holiday, Ella Fitz, Sinatra and Armstrong. Though not entirely jazz, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles make for great listening too.

I have to admit though, I can't listen to jazz for too long, and definitely none of that smooth/acid/chill/lounge/elevator/fusion stuff. After a while I have to get back into the gutter and put on some Howling Wolf or Muddy Waters .

In contrast I think I might enjoy a lot of the post-bop/fusion era of the late 60s-early 80s the most. Artists such as Terje Rypdal, Ketil Bjørnstad, Miroslav Vitouš, Jack DeJohnette, etc.

Some people would not consider smooth jazz JAZZ, but I absolutely cannot get enough of it. I love its classy, relaxing, sophisticated, sexy sound... There is nothing that can make me feel more at peace than smooth jazz can. I like The Rippingtons, Four Play, Spyro Gyra, Sade, Marc Antoine, Pete Belasco, David Benoit, and so on. I have never met anyone else who likes this type of music, especially not people around my age (27).

I'm a big jazz fan. Don't have a lot of albums and such, as music isn't really much of a need in my life (I could listen to it, but I'm perfectly comfortable in the silence, or with the hum of my wonderful computer children).

That being said, I realized I really liked jazz on a number of occasions, but I really enjoy classical jazz compositions, like Time Out by the Dave Brubek Quartet. The album so nice and sweet to the ears...and it makes my mind move...heck, I'm gonna go get it out of my car for a listen right now!

I equate it to listening to Mozart & Beethoven...and, ironically, I also like guitar soloist type of stuff (things that are really free-form, so jazz-like)....Phil Keaggy has some nice stuff, and I do like some of the Celtic type of stuff out there too.

Oh yeah!
Smooth jazz for whenever, Charlie Parker when I'm in a good mood/fully awake.

Like the best in all genres. But jazz was something I had to learn to like. Think it's more of NF thing...

The number "Webster & Hawkins - Blues for Yolanda" was the break-through.

Got several albums with Mediski, Martin & Wood and find it quite funny to find old jazz-clips on youtube - love when they improvise solos. It can be quite a power struggle.

I love jazz music, playing as well as listening, my favs are Michael Brecker, John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, Hiromi, Bela Fleck to name a few...Metheny is certainly acceptable, great guitarist, also, I don't care for smooth jazz...it is very cookie cutter in my opinion, try listening to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" album if you like smooth jazz If you like bass playing Marcus Miller's "Silver Rain" is similar to smooth jazz. Both of these albums are not the typical "smooth jazz" but are more than decent musicians that I think smooth jazz listeners could appreciate

I have recently fallen in love with jazz guitar, gypsy jazz, and traditional jazz guitar.
Flamenco jazz is slowly making it's way into main stream.

I love jazz too and it's something I should pursue in greater depth than I do. As it is I'm a big fan of Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis(preferably old stuff - Porgy and Bess is my favorite), Herbie Hancock, and John Coltrane.

I far as familiarity with contemporary jazz goes I'm about as dumb as a donkey. I do, however, love the pieces I've heard composed by Trent Keynaston.

Kurt Rosenwinkel. And the whole Downtown scene. Tom Harrell, Tomasz Stanko, Bad Plus, George Garzone, Wayne Shorter... All the people ready and willing to redefine and recreate jazz. You could say...the post-Ornette school. Though Ornette himself was incredible, and Django/Gypsy stuff was and is dope.

My favorite labels seem to be Fresh Sound and Tzadik (John Zorn), and of course Blue Note deserves mention.

So yeah. Jazz is great when it is screaming and causing your thoughts to morph and tackle. When it Sounds good.

I am a big fan of "old" jazz. I don't know much about jazz yet, though.

Benny Goodman sounds okay, but I like Albert Ayler.

There's jazz somewhere every night where I'm living and I'm exhausted because I'm never home before the early hours! Hanging out with a friend and a jazz journalist who do the tour of all the best events. Blue grass, Latin jazz, African....everything. They know far more than I do so I just hang out with them.

There was an open mic last night so all sorts of people turned up with their instruments for a few morceaux. Excellent stuff. Will try to identify who the big names are but I doubt anyone will know them outside France.

There's a national music event on 21 June (Fete de la Musique) meaning music in the restaurants, streets, bridges, metro etc which promises to be excellent with a jazz session in a friend's home the day after (he's invited 50 or so, so it should be a riot).

I have dark circles under my eyes along with my smile.

Hi theunstrungharp, yes, it's late, very late, in fact early and I've just seen your post.

Have just come back from a concert bar called Le Phoebus. It was HOT jazz tonight. Incredible, really excellent. Olivier Truchot on piano and a group of very talented 20-somethings on tenor sax, batterie and contre basse. FABULOUS. Olivier's girlfriend sang a few numbers later on after the group had done their planned numbers. Exhausted again but wouldn't have missed it.

There's another on 19th at same venue and other events in between but, as mentioned, it's all going to kick-off on Saturday with the national Fete de la Musique and then the friend's party the day after. Been invited to a small village for Saturday night, think someone has a cave (cellar) so will see what that's like.

SO many people are into jazz here that there really is something going on every night. Even this Monday (not normally a night to go out) I was at the little conservatoire at Fourviere...a peformance of piano, contre basse from two of the profs at the conservatoire and a good friend of theirs on batterie. Amazingly we had an electric storm outside during the concert so that just added something dramatic.....the African jazz was the best that night. The journalist reports for jazz-letter.com I believe.

Anyway, get yourself over here. I'll take you to the Hot Club, le Phoebus and the Clef a Voute just for starters. There's also the back bar at The Shamrock which has an open mic Mondays and people just turn up with their flutes, saxes, you name it.

You hum it, I'll find someone to play it for you.

You can count me in too. Though I find it hard to state which genre, as Im a Jazz newbie. I do recall enjoying stuff from around the early 1920s as well as Acid Jazz and TripHop with lashings of Funk on top.

Jazz!! One of my favourite music genres. John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Cal Tjader (father of acid jazz), Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, the list could go on forever!!!

OK, so tonight I was at the Hot Club de Lyon again. We had Oliver Truchot on piano and Gene Perla on contrebasse, with friends John and Jerome on sax and batterie respectively. Gene is a New Yorker doing a European tour so it was something else. He's written a few numbers and the most entertaining tonight was a tribute to Elvin Jones (a pianist I believe). Anyway, it was pretty hot. Think you can look Gene up on To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

My fav blend of Jazz is the post-bop blue note years.

Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Miles' 2 Quintet (although I love Kind of Blue), and bits and pieces of Coltrane.

Besides that I'm in love with Big band music and Duke Ellington.

I love Jazz but have been having trouble getting in to it in depth. It's a little intimidating.

My favourites so far are: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Burrel.

I listened to some John Coltrane but it was a bit heavy and put me off (might have just chosen the 'wrong' album or something). I like laid back Jazz, not too heavy, and nothing so fast and frantic that it may bring on an anxiety attack in me!?

Not exactly Jazz, but I like Astrud (or indeed any) Gilberto, Django Reinhardt, and quite a few more recent chambre-pop acts like Tindersticks, Portishead, Nouvelle Vague, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Now those are more calming for use after a stressful day at work!

Can anyone make any recommendations?

Modern jazz ftw. I don't dig the campy big band stuff. I like the more intimate fringey stuff...

Tomasz Stanko - mellow modern trumpet. I listen almost every night before sleep. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

John Hollenbeck - perhaps my favorite composer/drummer. He is redefining jazz, he's a timbrel guru, he's beyond. Check out stuff from album "Semi Formal". To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Tom Harrell - awesome modern composer To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. See if you can find a tune called "The Mountain" :o So good. "Scene" and "Angela" are great too.

Slavic Soul Party - no explaining needed. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Bill McHenry has the best sax tone ever and lots of other things that words can't mak sense of. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Bill's teach was the great George Garzone -- To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. All youtube links rock.

Django-inspired Gypsy jazz is some of the most accessible gateway-drug jazz there is. Anyone can love Robin Nolan... his trio is incredible.
