View Full Version : Punk music suggestions

I find that I enjoy the ideologies surrounding the punk music scene, and there have been songs on occasion that I really enjoyed. However, the raw, cheap garage style sound gets to me pretty quickly, maybe two songs and I have a raging headache. So I'm looking for suggestions of exceptionally well produced punk music (is there such a thing)?

For example, take Suicidal Tendencies, great music, great message, big headache.

Conversely, take a band like Ministry, yes not punk, I know, but very loud, distorted, angry, well produced, no headache.

Oh and lets skip past any mainstream suggestions. **cough cough green day cough**

Peace

Irish folk punk, as I like to call it: Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly...

Try this: Drunken Lullabies (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

or this: The Spicy McHaggis Jig (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

^Ha! My study partner from last term loves Flogging Molly.

Punk music is a joke, it's really just baroque... (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)

I've been told that CD Baby (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) is good for lesser-known quality punk. I have nothing to say about production value, though...

I guess you've already heard all the sort of mainstream classics (Clash, Ramones, Misfits, Sex Pistols, etc)?

Maybe check out Bad Religion or Operation Ivy.

The Dead Kennedys, while not exceptionally WELL-produced, have a kind of mediocre production that's not annoying; it has more low-mids and bass than treble. Another great band that's more recent is Hellacaust, they fuse hardcore punk with black metal and sarcasm (It's well-produced, but the playing itself MIGHT induce headaches).

About issues of headache-inducing production, if you like punk, you'll miss out on a LOT of the good stuff by ignoring what's badly produced. Just take Advil when you listen to punk.:p I speak as someone with occipital neuralgia who listens to black metal regularly.

Yeah, you end up cutting out The Stooges, Circle Jerks, Black Flag among many others.

In this vein check out The Lord Weird Slough Feg. Great hard rock/power metal with Irish influences. They're extremely folksy and thrashy. Here are some Slough Feg songs.

I started out by getting into the Punk Compilations...Vans Warped Tour / Punk-o-Rama...

Some faves

NoFx: (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
Lagwagon (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
DieselBoy (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
Dropkick Murphy's (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
AntiFlag (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
Dead Milkmen (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) (gotta love the classics man....)
Chixdiggit! (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) (just representin' the homeland...)

BlankTV.com for plenty. I could go on, on, on , on , on...

Basically... punk is inclusive. There's no 1 band...no 1 sound... the one rule for me is, the more popular they are, the less punk they are :P
I think you might be S.O.L on the 'garage sound' anyway :)

PROPAGANDHI (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)!!! wOOp!!

DieselBoy - Good
Dropkick Murphy's - Excellent
AntiFlag - Very good
Dead Milkmen - Ha! Can't believe I forgot about these guys, reasonably good.
PROPAGANDHI - Exceptional
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Almost perfect
Dropkick Murphys - Fantastic
Agent Orange - Awesome
AFI - Hey this is pretty good, but were crossing over into a sort of mainstream goth now aren't we? I have enough goth music.

Ones suggested so far that are not on this list are either to raw, or to wussy. Let's focus on the tougher stuff.

I'm a big fan of industrial music, any of these punk bands use distorted vocals?

Thanks for all the help everyone.

for AFI go with stuff from the album "Answer that and stay fashionable" its more punk

Let's focus on the tougher stuff.

Look no further than later Motorhead for well-produced, tough punk. (Their earlier stuff is great too, just underproduced.) Some will say they're metal, and technically they're right, but others say it's punk, and they're right too. I just call it heavy punk.

Also, another tougher punk band, who happen to have a much more "punk" message than Motorhead: Corrosion of Conformity. Saw both these bands on the same tour back in '05, absolutely amazing show.

In general, if you want both toughness and good production, you may see yourself drifting into the metal realm. Motorhead and COC are still pretty punk, but they're on the border.

Motorhead and CoC are alright, although we are definately blurring into the realm of metal, which is fine, there is some metal in my collection.

Perhaps I should clarify what I mean by tough. Not aggressive toughness, but internal toughness, a disregard for personal pain, heavy life experience, a fuck everything kind of attitude. It's unfortunate that this kind of mentality seems to be presented in mostly under produced music, the sex pistols is a prime example of this.

Perhaps I just need more advil.

^^^ Really? I was certain that there would be a ton of masochistic, anarchist, apathetic, angry musicians in the punk music scene. If not, where would one find them?

Minor Threat
The Damned
Subhumans

Yeah, I don't know what he's talking about, punk is full of that kind of attitude. I don't have tons of punk, but here are a few songs that I know exemplify that attitude.

Some other good punk that doesn't exactly follow those lyrical themes, but I still like...

'Every time I die' has a lot of metal influence, but their lyrics are among my favorite, it's unfortunate that so many are unintelligible.

And a track from one of my favorite albums, 'the shape of punk to come' by refused.

Shinqui I would say best start with the more commercial stuff (I' dont mean POP like green day on the radio) but the best and most prolific modern era punk band are NOFX, Bad Religion and Rancid as well.

(order of preference)

- NOFX (the lives shows are amazing as well)
- Rancid
- Bad Religion
- Old Millencolin
- Old Blink (chesire cat, dude ranch)
- Lagwagon

- Propagandi (political punk)

You may also enjoy punk inspired bands like Pavement or Pixies. Both are excellent.

The more hardcore stuff is too amelodic in my opinion even if the lyrics are good, though the diehards will disagree :)

In my experience that is a best way to go than trying to listen to hardcore straight of the bat. Hope that helps!

I suggest punk compilation cds (punk-o-rama, world vans tour, atticus: dragging the lake, shut the punk up, etc). You can get 40+ songs fairly cheap, and the variety lets you find out which bands you enjoy & which ones you don't. If your worried about headaches, you can always look up the bands on the cd you consider checking out on myspace or last.fm or another site for a demo.

This description fits GG Allin perfectly, but you probably know about him already and his production will feel like a spear through your head.

One of my uncles played drums for GG Allin for a period of time in the early 90's. GG Allin apparently used to hang out in my grandparent's house when they were practicing. I sh*t you not.
