View Full Version : INTJ, ISTP, or INTP?

After doing tons of reading, I'm starting to doubt my identification of INTJ. I'm clearly aware of my dominant function, Introverted Thinking. So, that immediately throws me out of the realm of the INTJ, but leaves me in the possibility of ISTP or INTP. The way I act gives me the impression that I am an ISTP, considering that I have a hard time going through long-term commitments such as a musical instrument (Might be why I'm not playing it...)

Here are my traits:

- Absolutely LOVE Science Fiction (Military Sci-Fi is my preferred genre) and comic books. Sensors aren't suppose to like comic books, from what I've read somewhere.

- Die-hard PC FPS gamer. The faster-paced and gorier they are, the better.

- Thrash Metalhead.

- Libertarian political ideals.

- My room has a messy look to it, but it's actually organized.

- This seems to be against Introverted traits: I love challenge, especially if it's related with reasonable logic (That means no stupid puzzles). For example: I want to figure out how long it would take for a .50 caliber round to hit the ground due to gravity.

- I seem to actually have great hand-eye coordination. I will only play sports if it's just for fun.

- The only TV shows/movies that I watch are either Science Fiction or Political. Today's TV programs suck.

- I have many areas of expertise (An INTJ trait). They are PC gaming, computers, politics, firearms, guitars, and graphic design. However, I have friends in all of those specific fields, some have knowledge on more than one of them.

- I have a great memory.

- I love Internet humor, irony, and slap-stick.

In general, the arrow is pointing at ISTP, although I like being the leader when the task is necessary.

Help me fellow Intellectuals settle this personal crisis once and for all.

Have you identified your main cognitive process(es)?
That would certainly give you a much better idea of your "true" type.
INTJs have a:
Dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni)
Auxiliary Extroverted Thinking (Te)

I'm sure other forum members could explain the cognitive processes system in detail, if need be.

Good luck with finding your type!

I'd vote for ISTP, with a low S. There are a lot of P traits there. S are there too, but not so much.

Bottom line, you can be any type you want to be. It's just a matter of self-understanding and changing priorities.

I guess you have a high probability to be INTP. I have a bunch of INTP colleagues near me, and your descriptions match some typical INTP traits.

This INTP profile is one of the most accurate descriptions for INTP i can find.

The bottom line is, to check if you are S or N, think if you like theory or abstract stuff or not. Are you imaginative? Do you hate routines? are you creative? NT's are in general highly theoretical, and like to think or discuss about abstract things. S type tend to find theories rather boring. They trust in practical things--things they can see, touch and feel, instead of those day dreams or imaginations.

I'm still struggling with the type thing as well. I typed myself as an INTx because I'm weak on the J/P. However, I don't consider myself INTP'ish, and the description doesn't fit me at all. I relate best to the INTJ description, however I can also relate to some things in the ISTP description. In fact, I typed ISTP a couple years ago so perhaps I am an ISTP.

I think my primary function is Ti. I've been unknowingly developing my Te for the past years which I think now gives me more INTJ traits. As for the 'S' in ISTP, I don't really understand that one. I do like racket sports and computer games so maybe that explains it. Other than that I'm quite an abstract thinker...

Good idea to post your traits up, maybe if more of us "seekers" do it, we can find some common ground.

- Very logically oriented
- Have an enormous hunger for understanding and am quite detail oriented.
- Am a hardcore FPS gamer with excellent hand-eye coordination (also play competitive table-tennis)
- Am quite competitive at most games (but not a bad loser)
- Rock/Metal fan
- Scifi fan
- Huge comedy fan (Monty Python / South Park / Stand-up)
- Fascinated by other people however don't have direct desire to interact
- I have groups of friends (none extremely close) with whom I share something specific (sports, work, school, past-experiences)
- Was a quiet and shy kid (very good listener though)
- Like theory, but at a certain point I definitely need to get my hands dirty

We sound like clones 0.0. (In the traits)

What's the point of being on a theory based site if I find it boring? The main reason why I love Sci Fi so much is because it produces all of these possibilities of the future. Routines are subjective for me, it depends what you're referring to. Creativity as in? Again, creativity is subjective.

I'll start reading the provided profile.

It's hard to judge based on you description, since some traits reveal your S side, and some reveal your N. Of course, no one is 100% N or S, it is about what the dominant is.
We can find these traits both on INTJ/INTP/ISTP. One trick you could identify your type is by Recognising Stress.

-------------------------------

For INTJ

As stress increases, 'learned behaviour' tends to give way to the natural style, so the INTJ will behave more according to type when under greater stress. For example, in a crisis, the INTJ might:

* retire to a private place and think through a problem until the INTJ has formulated a complete plan for solving it
* try to maintain a high degree of quality in the solution
* criticise others' ideas, particularly if they involve compromising quality
* make errors of fact, or pursue ideas that are unrealistic

Under extreme stress, fatigue or illness, the INTJ's shadow may appear - a negative form of ESFP. Example characteristics are:

* doing things to excess - e.g.: eating, drinking or exercising
* acting very impulsively, perhaps starting off more projects than the INTJ could hope to accomplish
* expressing emotions in an intensive and uncontrolled way
* being very sensitive to criticism
* asking for lots of information that is irrelevant

The shadow is part of the unconscious that is often visible to others, onto whom the shadow is projected. The INTJ may therefore readily see these faults in others without recognising it in him/her self.

For ISTP

As stress increases, 'learned behaviour' tends to give way to the natural style, so the ISTP will behave more according to type when under greater stress. For example, in a crisis, the ISTP might:

* withdraw from people, to think through possible solutions
* use tried and trusted solutions to short-term problems
* criticise others efforts and ignore their feelings
* sort out detailed points that could perhaps wait

Under extreme stress, fatigue or illness, the ISTP's shadow may appear - a negative form of ENFJ. Example characteristics are:

* displaying intense feelings towards others, or insisting on things being done without any logical basis
* being very sensitive to criticism
* having a gloomy view of the future
* attributing unrealistic negative meaning to others actions or statements

The shadow is part of the unconscious that is often visible to others, onto whom the shadow is projected. The ISTP may therefore readily see these faults in others without recognising it in him/her self.

Just finished reading the link that Diva provided. I can safely say that I'm an INTP.

Go Intellectuals!
