Friend of mine sent me a link today about a American company that makes kilts. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
So that's begs the question: Would you (assuming males here) ever wear a kilt?

I looked around prior to the Scottish Games this past spring for something to wear, but the prices generally turned me away. I'm Irish and not Scottish, but I think it'd be fun. Apparently my surname has a coat of arms somewhere.

I would not. *firmly*
I've got Dewar blood, and that family appears to come from around Edinburgh, which even the least-interested in Scotland can tell is nowhere near the Hi'lands, so how they got a tartan I can't imagine...

Well, I have MacDonald blood, so...
Anyways, my question was more aimed at would you simply wear one in public? Say someone afford to buy you a kilt (either traditional or modern): Would you wear it out on the streets?
My sirname is Scottish, and I'd wear one if they weren't so dementedly-expensive. I have a proper sirname, too, not one of those peasant names that people often give when claiming they're Scottish. "Dude, you were named after the city my family's serfs lived in", or "Wow, you're named after a pile of rocks. That's funny."...bletch. They don't even have a tartan, a coat of arms, or a castle.

Harsh. I'm Cairns by name, but I apparently have Fraser and Munro lineage. I don't really pay much attention to family histories, though.
It would pretty cool to wear a kilt in the proper context, but there's no context in which I'd wear a Utilikilt. They tend to garner too much negative attention for the wearer.

I'd actually like to get married in a kilt.
If I wasn't Dutch...I'd wear one.

Most definitely...
Kilts give us men the freedom we deserve, not bound by pants, which we should all know by now is evil.
Actually I'm rather indifferent about it. It'd kind of depend on the scenario, for instance if I was going to go for a night on the town and do a merry jig or two, a kilt would exceed my expectations. A funeral? Not so much...

No thanks. I'm going to go and continue my barbarian heritage of wearing pants and using soap.

My barbarian heritage has something to do with running around with a black-dyed wolf skin...and that's it.

I don't have any Scottish blood in me, so probably no.
But maybe for a some special effect I would.
Wouldn't it be a bit shocking to wear it on purpose in public? 8-)

Sure I would. It's very "rock and roll," and would be nice and breezy in the summer, I would imagine. Maybe I'll get one this summer. Also, kilts on chicks are hot.

It may be a little breezy in the summer, but keep in mind if you're wearing a full kilt you've got 8-9 yards of pleated wool wrapped around you.

Ever since i've worn one a couple of years ago I envy women, because they get t wear skirts all the time (somehow that sounds weird). Even though it was summer and yes, kilts are heavy packs of wool, it was still very pleasant and comfotable...

They're alright, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from my last company Christmas party, an ENTP co-worker wore one to a fancy restaurant and thought he was so cool and hip but it just came off as another lame attempt at self-indulgence.

Why not? I'd be willing to try one on. I bet I could get a few laughs out of it which would be worth while.

As long as the kilt is traditional, but is not worn--ahem--traditionally, I'm cool with guys in kilts for special occasions. I don't know about the utilikilt, though.
@ konec: Skirt envy is not something we women get from straight men that often.

Heh... Scottish ancestry here so I'm all for it
What is never cool is the up-kilt photographs that seem to be a requirement when said kilt-wearer is smashed... not cool and NEVER use my camera thanks!

Without a doubt. I already own two skirts which I wear on occasions.

...maybe a thin cotton kilt? Too girly?

If someone bought one for me, of course! Damn, even if I found one that was cheap enought, why the hell not? Since it would be fun, I'm all for it!
I've seen guys in kilts or Utilikilts who wore them well. I wouldn't want to see every guy in a skirt, but then I don't want to see some women in skirts, lol.

I think thanks to the utilikilts it actually is becoming more acceptable. I know I saw a guy in a utilikilt at the grocery store recently, and I was surprised how normal I considered it. Granted I am around a lot of Scottish culture so that may have had something to do with my reaction.

A utilikilt might be lighter (than heavy wool not thin cotton).

As long as I can wear the dirk to go with it!
Technically double bladed knives have, for some reason, been deemed more dangerous than single bladed knives where I live and are thus banned. Although, I have never seen a Scotsman with a kilt get hassled for his dirk so I think that is the only way I could be in the clear.
Hmmm... the kilt would still be cool sans dirk but I don't know how often I'd wear it.

An woman walked up to an old man wearing a kilt and asked "Sir is there anything worn under the kilt?"
"Not at all dear it is as good as new!"
