autechre and Venetian snares are pretty much my favorite modern composers. Sometimes IDM almost makes all other kinds of music seem obsolete. I know their is some argument on the genre name "IDM" (Intelligent Dance Music) and while I agree with most of their points, it's the name most people seem to classify it under.
On perhaps an unrelated note, I also tend to enjoy dark ambient music a great deal. I know it's apples and oranges, but I find them somehow relatable to one another in the listening-experience I get from both genres.
Anyone else greatly enjoy this style of music? I'd also be curious to hear/learn of their their favored artists.

Autechere is borderline genius work. I only first heard them when ep7 was released on Nothing, but I've since come to discover the fact that Chiastic Slide in particular pleases me more than an album should. Although I'm not a rabid fan of IDM in general, and I have no idea how to use supercollider. When you say "dark ambient", what are you talking about in particular? My area of interest is primarily into industrial and post-industrial, so there might be some overlap.

I've always been a Richard D James fan (Aphex Twin - hence the avatar) and Warp recordings is generally a great label that puts out this kind of music (IDM)
Amon tobin is another guy who puts out "next level" type stuff that I respect, but admittedly don't listen to all that often. I prefer the chilled out deep-tech-house grooves for my ambient moods, so a lot of house producers would be on my list, but I won't bother mentioning them here.

Most of the electronic or experimental music I listen to is Industrial. But my younger brother is into the Venetian Snares and played me something by them that I liked a lot. That's about the only IDM that I really enjoyed.

Agreed. Chiastic Side and EP7 are best, but I find myself liking nearly everything by them. Even Confield, (although I can only take so much Confield in one sitting.) Lp5, Trirepeatae, and their Garbage EP are also favorites of mine. I also find autechre to be borderline genius.
As for Dark Ambient, I'm thinking of musicians like Biosphere, Jääportit, Sombrous, Lull, Vir Unis. A lot of it I don't find even find "dark", I just find kind of cold, like a very beautiful and barren winter landscape. The music is generally pretty minimalistic.
