View Full Version : Women or Gay men: What is your Favorite Male body?

There is a thread about what body types males and lesbians like in women. It occurred to me that they seemed to have a preference toward the media ideal of skinny with "proportional" breasts and slightly larger hips. I don't have a physical ideal and I haven't noticed any media agenda in terms of a "fashionable" male body. Have you noticed a preferred "ideal" in terms of propaganda? What "type" of body are you attracted to?

Well growing up it seemed like the muscular Brad Pitt types were always popular with my friends, but I've always had a thing for the scrawny Mr. Rogers type.

Hmmm. i think there is definitly more acceptance of a wider range of body types for men than for women. Personally I like guys to be skinnier rather than buff brad-pitt types. I like guys around 6ft that are that long thin gangly kind of type. Dunno why. I certainly appreciate looking at buff guys but to actually date them or have sex with them... dusnt really do it for me.

I really don't have a body type, I do prefer height weight proportion and somewhere over 5'8" other then that I prefer an engaging personality and you must have good teeth, I simply won't kiss a man with bad teeth. Intelligence doesn't matter as long as they are happy, I don't like morose people, I want to enjoy myself, I don't want to babysit either. I do have a thing for ears though, I like interesting ears, above average size that stick out some are my favorites but anything interesting along the ears will do. Oh and teeth, did I mention teeth, I love a great smile, they don't have to be bleached white but they must be well maintained, I am a kisser and love to kiss and be kissed a nice set of choppers are paramount.

Interesting! That reminds me...for some reason, I have a thing for guys with large noses. But then the men in my family all seem to have prominent noses.

Interesting.... When I consider people I have dated, one similarity they have is they are all in relatively good shape. I think that depending on a person I can find various types of looks attractive. But ideally, I do have a specific preference. Being proportional is the most important part, I'm all about balance :)
I generally like guys that are average height or a little taller. I'm between 5'3 and 5'4 so it's nice when a guy is taller (anywhere between 6 to 10 inches taller than me is perfect). I generally prefer leaner guys who have well defined muscles, I don't really like the imposing body builder look or extremely tall men (6'2+ is probably way too tall for comfort). I have to wonder if that has something to do with my need to be with an equal as opposed to someone who tries to dominate me (perhaps my emotional preference translates to what I prefer physically... idk). On the other hand, I also don't think I would find a guy who is on the short side (under 5'7) or is way too skinny attractive either (as in, if we wear the same pant size - we have a problem).
Having said all that, this is just my highest preference. Obviously, I can find other attractive people appealing as well, especially if I like them personally. But I have relatively high standards, in a sense that I'd rather not have to talk myself into being attracted to someone, it should just happen naturally.
I'm a lot less specific as to what I like about a guy's face because I don't know how to separate the way someone's face looks from the way I see them as a person. I will generally find a person's face attractive as long as I find the person appealing.
Haha I'm going to try and not be tacky with the underwear pics :p This is just an example of the body type I was talking about.

I'm curious, what is too 'bulky'? It's a nebulous word being thrown around this thread (much like the oft-mentioned 'athletic body' in the other thread) without definition, examples or any frame of reference whatsoever. So, what is too bulky?

Only the first one is really attractive to me.
- At least 3 inches taller than me (I'm 5'7")
- Halfway in-between skinny and muscular. Lean, with nice muscle definition, but not too bulky. NOT fat.
- Angular features. Prominent nose, but not too large or bulbous. A jaw that isn't too heavy or too slight. I don't like men with full lips, probably because of their association with femininity.
- A nice cocky smile. ;)
- Intense eyes, strong brows. I don't care much about eye color, but if I had to pick I'd go for bright blue.
- Very light, even skin.
- Dark hair. Black and auburn are preferred. Brown is also nice. I don't really go for blondes or redheads.
- Good hygiene; must be clean and smell nice.
- Teeth don't have to be perfectly straight, but they must be white.
- The less body hair, the better. The same goes for facial hair. I don't mind a few days worth of scruff, but I dislike anything more than that.
- Good posture and a confident gait.
- Between the ages of 19 and 24 (I'm 19).
- No tattoos, piercings, flashy clothes, or dyed hair.
- Oh, and I almost forgot... I like guys with nice hands. I always notice the way a guy's hands look... I like a guy with hands that look like a larger version of mine; with long, thin fingers.
- Nice *ahem* nethers.
Yeah. I'm picky. Obviously this is an ideal, personality is more important, etc. But this post is all about looks, so I won't get into anything else.

First is ok but would be on my borderline for being too bulky. Others too are way over the top.
I agree about faces... faces are too connected to who a person actually is. I am fairly sure that I find anyone I care about attractive. There are guys faces that will turn my head but its more just an appreciation of looks. I don't actually feel attracted to them sexually.

These are ALL too muscular for my tastes, though the first one is still quite nice. I'd say the ideal weight for a man of 5'10" is 140lbs (give or take a few) of lean muscle.
I can deal with guys that are "too skinny," but I'm not at all attracted to men that are overweight.

I read somewhere that there is strong evidence that a woman is attracted to different male body types depending on where she is relative to her period -- Women are typically more attracted to masculine men the closer they are to ovulation, and typically more attracted to feminine men the farther they are from ovulation. It's also known that women typically like their men a couple inches taller than them.
Men, on the other hand, consistently go towards more feminine women, regardless of anything.
I performed an involuntary double take upon realizing that's a male.I didn't even double take -- my mind instantly classified him as gay. :p

I heard that somewhere too. It' pretty interesting to think about, but I have to say even if that is true for me the variation is pretty slight... There is a set of people who I always think are hot, but perhaps exactly how hot would depend on that.
I don't care how far away I am from ovulating I would not find a really girly guy attractive.

According to the consensus (or at least random things I read) here, I'm very undesirable.
1. Wrong body type
2. Low-end of the height scale (5'9")
3. Small black eyes, weak brow
4. Dark, permanent farmer's tan
5. I look better when I'm not smiling (or attempting to do so)
6. "Piano/cello hands" (which means they're not thin/light/delicate)
7. Curly, frizzly hair
8. Bad posture
Only thing I have going for me is I shower daily?

Feet have no correlation with penis size (I have clodhoppers, but not a 12 inch schlong). But some features of a guy's hand do correlate -- for example, I know a good estimation is the tip of a guy's middle finger to where his hand meets his wrist. It's accurate on me, at least.

I'm curious, is that also the reason why skinnier fingers may be more attractive on men? Because it makes them look longer? I know my fingers are average in their skinniness/girth.

- slightly heavier-skinnier then me
- average-small nose (i'm weird about nose size. i duno)
- half white and half asian/mexican/indian (they all look good to me. ha)
- soft eyes
- kind of a baby face
yeah, that's basically the list. ha.
some full whities, indians, and mexicans make the list.
half do it better, though.
if they look super thin, but have lean muscle, super added bonus. ha.
the only kinda famous person i can think of that i consider attractive would be the kid from I Set My Friends On Fire (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).
this kid isn't famous (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). i just was browsing on deviantart and found this pic. absolutely gorgeous. ha.
haha, i have been told i have weird taste, though.

- dark hair
- dark eyes
- not too tall (as in for sure not over 6')- I'm 5'4 about. I hate having someone towering over me- I think Josephine's explanation suits me as well.
- rugged, outdoorsy types (hello lumberjack!)
- NOT skinny, and no defined muscles. A little bit of fat, a little bit of muscle nicely balanced. If they look broad-chested, with nice fairly-built shoulders, perf.
- body-hair please- no gorillas, but a hairless guy is just gross to me.
- no metrosexuals
- no long, greasy-haired guys- yuck. I don't mind balding, dreads etc, but I need it to look somewhat clean and kept up.
- don't mind facial hair at all as long as it's really closely clipped- no straggly, yellowing beards or staches. NO. I do NOT want to see that food hanging in there.
- I can't stand sausage-fingers. Gross. I don't want them to look thin and delicate, but can't there be something inbetween?
- A great voice. Ahh, I don't mean singing voice, but a nice manly voice ROCKS MY WORLD.
- a few scars are a nice touch, tattoos I'm OK with. I'm not sure about 90% coverage, but a few, sure. I guess it depends what they are too. Not huge numbers of piercings either.
- not a huge fan of man-jewelry. Just a few pieces, sure.
But this only takes me just past first sight. It really is in the attitude a guy has: confident, somewhat intense, sexy and I swear, I would go for anyone. He has to look at you like he's going to take you right over. Bingo.
Edit:

I think I'm a rare one who doesn't like skinny men. I like them to have some physical substance to them. I really don't like very slim hips on a man, it makes them look fragile and I don't know, kind of swift in a buzzy kind of way.

I tend to go for short guys. Taller than me (which is not difficult to fulfil, I'm barely 5'1"), but below 5'10". I'm actually more particular about face than body, I wouldn't find a guy attractive if he had a killer body and an awful face. But since we're talking about body type here, I tend to like those with a sprinter-type build, relatively compact and not too tall. I'm also a huge fan of nice arms.
I'm willing to let one or two of the above criteria go if the guy has, as I said, a really nice face, a voice that's nice to listen to, or is proficient in the playing of a musical instrument. :cheesy:

I don't really have a favoured body type...except that too skinny doesnt really do it for me cos they just seem like little boys...and obviously obese is a turn off. But within that range I'm not too bothered. Don't have a problem with slightly on the tubby side, just not too big. And I would always prefer a hairy chest and hairy arms, not like a forest lol, but quite a lot. Basically, i like attributes which make the man look like a proper man, not an adolescent. And height doesn't bother me a great deal either, anyone taller than 5'7'' or so is fine by me, as I'm a midget!

What about buff warrior nerds?
My INTJ guy is a buff warrior nerd. Smart Army guy with a killer bod. I'm pretty unimpressive by comparison, but I think what has brought us together isn't my body, but the fact that I "get" his brain, whereas most other guys look at him like a slab of beef.

In theory, I like taller guys (I'm 5'9"), but I always seem to end up with guys around my height. Maybe I have "short man complex," heh. Aside from that, dark hair and dark eyes are a must. People are always surprised by that because I have blonde hair and very light blue eyes, but oh well. Oddly enough, I like thick guys--not buff or muscular, but kind of big-boned and a little pudgy. Strange, I know. Other than that, a great smile is desirable (though not necessary). Longer hair can be fun to play with (and pull ;) ), but not TOO long; the cut-off's (gosh, I love puns) probably a couple inches above the shoulders. As far as how he carries himself, I'm pretty extreme: either awkward and shy or cocky and self-aware.
Not that he fits all of this criteria, but anybody else think Jake Gyllenhaal is gorgeous? He seems pretty skinny, but I'm a great cook, so I'm sure I could fatten him up a little bit. :p

I'd like to input something.
The perfect girl for me is the girl that isn't overweight and not too skinny.
The breast size doesn't really matter..unless it's very big ( I don't like big breast )
She must have a pretty face...like round and cute (hard to explain exactly what make a pretty face )
The body isn't that much important if she has a pretty face and she's proporsional. the height doesn't matter. She could be taller than me... that would be strange but not bad.
The best match would be my size...When I dance with a 5 feet girl it's pretty bad...I have to crouch to be at the same height as her...
btw i'm 5feet9 or more

The sculpted bodybuilder type does not do it for me, it never has. I don't know why. I get these stupid e-mail joke forwards all the time from friends who drool over these guys. I look at them and feel no stirring whatsoever. Makes me feel deficient in some way...they can't believe I am not attracted in the slightest to them.
I prefer a more natural appearance, but some definition in the thighs - as a runner or bicyclist would have developed. Generally, a Ectomorphic body type or a slighter Mesomorphic Somatotypes (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).
Also Sean Connery in his 007 days had a very nice physique.
I married an Endomorphic body type who is pretty fit, so the images here aren't exactly spot on. It is interesting to me that I am attracted to lean muscle as opposed to tightly bunched. On a man I will notice nice thighs and slender fingers. They drive me wild.
Height makes no difference to me. How a man carries himself will draw a woman. You can be short and carry yourself well, it will attract.
Confidence attracts, being comfortable in your own skin and also a kind face. The depth in someone's eyes I also find intriguing.

Have narrower chests - not muscular - honestly, this is the biggest factor
Tend to be geeky

Not very hairy on the body
Often, the guy I think is hot never ever thought a woman would think that. He is just about the antithesis of the commonly thought "hot guy".

Why is this the ideal?
Musclely, but not overly so. The bulky body type looks out of proportion and looks rather unnatural. The thin type is also out of proportion and appears emancipated.

IMO that body is and will always be the ideal. I firmly believe that the young, athletic, in-shape body is the most aesthetically beautiful (for both men and women) and that the idea that different body types look more attractive depending on societal conditions is poppycock. I think that particular phenomena is more about what people (have to) settle for and less about what maximizes their aesthetic pleasure.

In my head I think I go for tall, imposing, broad shouldered type guys. I'm 5'11'' and ideally a guy would be at least 6'2'' for me. However... in practice I have never dated a guy taller than 6'0'' and, in fact, two of my boyfriends have been shorter than me. If a guy is shorter than me - he had better be well built, because otherwise I just feel like a huge heffalumpy unfeminine hulk next to him... and no-one likes that.
Also, I like hairy guys... I guess I'm just attracted to all the very masculine traits. A guys hands and arms are the most important physical feature for me...big, square hands and big, toned arms. Yup.
However, not brain-dead with big muscles, and not vanity-addled gym-toned mirror-kisser types. I'm trying to think of someone that approximates my perfect type... so urm, maybe the writer China Mieville...he's pretty big and toned and tall but also veeery smart.

I don't really like the super-toned look, although people like Ryan Reynolds and Randy Orton are exceptions. I mean, aesthetically, in the way that I like the Torso Belvedere, a not too over-the-top (aka chemically "assisted") muscularity can be interesting.
As for Michelangelo's David, remember that it is Michelangelo's David. Michelangelo was an individual with a particular taste in male bodies, not some kind of grand arbiter of general opinion.

Speaking of the tall lanky nerd type, Shelton in the Big Bang Theory is like...a dream come true. He's just so nerdy and geeky and quirky and completely useless in real world and cute and gay. I've never felt strong emotions towards TV characters but for Shelton I wish they won't give him a girlfriend or boyfriend or any human related burden so he can remain this perfect...God of nerds.
I couldn't tell if a man is lean muscular or anorexic under clothes, so to be save I'll say I'm more attracted to the thin type in clothes, with long legs, long neck, and a narrow waist. Whether he has muscles is not very important. Sometimes I'm attracted to the anorexic types and felt somewhat guilty, just hope they don't really starve themselves.
In terms of classical sculpture body type I actually prefer Donatello's David more than Michelangelo's David.
In terms of female body a woman with very straight very dark long hair, long legs and chiseled face will kill me on sight.
Generally I like people with some androgynous qualities, either in appearance or personality. The extreme masculine or feminine type is boring, artificial, and implies a sense of insecurity.

Bigger than mine, mostly, although not heavy enough to have really obvious folds of flesh or anything (and when I gained enough weight to no longer have at least a fairly smooth body surface, I simply quit even considering dating). My height preference is right around six feet (I'm 5'6"), although I've rarely actually dated anyone in that range. Most of my exes have been pretty muscular in a non-weightlifting sort of way, either wiry or kinda sturdy. But I'm usually fine with fairly ordinary/average bodies as long as something else about them-- voice, eyes, smile, hands, whatever-- strongly attracts me.
Funny thing is, I saw a fairly recent photo of an ex who'd put on a good 30-40 lbs, and I still found him attractive. I guess the memory of our original attraction was enough, so I can see how longtime couples learn not to care much about their partners' appearance.
benvdespot added to this post, 5 minutes and 17 seconds later...
Am I one of the odd guys who finds women as tall or taller than me attractive? Granted, I am 5'10. But I know three girls (two of whom I'm still good friends with) that are just as tall as I am, and I find incredibly attractive. Unfortunately, they're taken.
I dunno. Would it be strange for a tall girl to have a 5'10 guy interested in them?
I'm fairly certain I don't have the short guy complex... dunno.

Actually, i heard the same thing about tip of the middle finger to where your hand meets your wrist. Let's just say if I were a guy, I'd be very well endowed (way better than all of my girlfriends, we checked ;D). That was the most entertaining thing I learned my last year of college.
This doesn't always hold true. My husband has very short fingers, we think because of a drug his mom was on when she was pregnant, but it's more of an inverse correlation let's just say...

As far as the body, I just want them to be bigger than me. I once dated a guy who was super skinny and weighed about the same as me and it really bugged me. This is probably more about me wanting to feel feminine, but whatever...

The 300 guys were all single-digit body fat... you didn't think they looked sharp and freakish?
Good point. I guess in that context (ie in capes, helmets and battle-thongs) that body type works best as eye candy. In reality I'd be afraid to hug something so chiseled.

i'm kind of odd.
i go for shorter guys (no taller than an inch higher than me and i'm 5'-7")
stocky build, pudgy is okay... but not fat
short hair is a must
premature grey is awesome.. salt and pepper hair is an INSTANT attraction
a sexy, articulate voice
disproportionately large forearms (not into the muscular types - just this)
dark eyes - dark brown are my favorite
as far as physical attraction goes, thats about it.
oh, also... i love when a guy's ears wiggle when he talks. dont ask me why, i love that!

I read somewhere that there is strong evidence that a woman is attracted to different male body types depending on where she is relative to her period -- Women are typically more attracted to masculine men the closer they are to ovulation, and typically more attracted to feminine men the farther they are from ovulation.
Well I dont ovulate I can tell you that... But I go for the more masculine side of the spectrum in terms of my body preference.
I cant fathom the reason why Im gay. But I do know that i hated my father during the period that i realized I was, and I've allways felt like Ive lacked a father figure.
I like guys with the Mesomorph body type. Its a comfort/protection/safety thing. Im an Endomorph and am reasonably skinny, thin of frame. My bf canoes and he has a vaguely hairy chest (ok he shaves it) and he is muscular though not toned and tonk in that annoying model calvin klein way, he has a real body (so to speak).
My INTJ boyfriend's father died when he was a baby. And he likes Endomorphs or twinks in the annoying gay vernacular, plus i found porn on his laptop that was the older on younger type stuff (I was drunk at the time, i did not enjoy invading his privacy). Whilst I seek a father figure, I think the mix of INTJ independence and loosing his father, my bf seeks to become the father figure. And so is attracted to those of more frailty, and wishes to protect them. As he said once "I dont like doing this, you're too delicate & I dont want to hurt you" (it was a sex position suggestion).
Oh yeah and he has a strong chin, his bottom jaw occasionally sits in front of his upper jaw. I dig jaws/chins like that :D. Plus his mouth is constructed in a slightly lopsided way (he speaks with the left of his mouth more than the right) apparently this is because when peoples brains are large, the body doesn't know what to do, and compensates by moving or neglecting other things, namely the jaw bone or the mouth construction. Its what ive heard anyway.

The point was, men's preferences for body types doesn't vary by the time of month.

With pregnancy, everything can happen.
With menopause, her preferences become more static.

The image of Reynolds (the first one) is attractive but I would have NOTHING bulkier or musclier then that. I like the tall, lanky figures. I don't know... i just do :D Lean figures. I don't really mind if they have very minimal muscle as long as there not overweight (unfortunately overweight does not attract me in partner-speaking terms). If any of you watch Friends (the tv-show) I find Ross's body attractive (the sturdier build) but also Chandler in the earlier seasons (thinner, lankier). I personally find Joey too bulky for my liking. ... lol I love Friends

I think height is the most important feature to me. I like a guy who's at least 10 or more inches taller than me. (I'm 4'6", I don't think I'm asking too much :p ) Beyond that there's something I can admire about most body types so long as the guy is healthy in his body type. A little pudge isn't a deal breaker for me as long as the guy is still healthy and active. If I had to choose a body type though I'd probably choose an ectomorphic body type over another.

I can deal with guys that are "too skinny," but I'm not at all attracted to men that are overweight.
I'm the opposite, I'm not attracted to guys who are too skinny, overweight doesn't bother me much.

^ that thing. I love skinny/slightly toned men. Muscle kind of grosses me out.
I think he's attractive but I'm not attracted to him. Kinda how I see most guys that are considered hot by mainstream standards, I agree they are but they do nothing for me.
Bingo.
YES that! Minus the dark hair/eyes, I like em blond haired blue eyed, not that I'm fussed though. And yes, yes, yes on the voice, the right voice can give me chills.
I'd say the only thing that is consistent for me in terms of attraction is height, I've never been attracted to a guy who was shorter than me, this may be because they're not usually made that small, I'm just under 5.4" other than that I like guys that actually look like men, metrosexual does nothing for me at all.

I like that there be a least little enough padding that some nice contours show. I love smooth skin, not covered up or bristly with hair. Beautiful, like sculpture.

A lot of people are. ;)
It makes walking in crowded areas even more awkward.
I guess I should also add I'm not usually attracted to guys that are much taller than 6'. If I'm walking close to or behind a guy I don't want to worry about getting an elbow in the eye... that also happens a lot.

Oh, the media likes a muscle man with a six pack, blue eyes, frighteningly perfect hair, white capped teeth, etc. You get the picture. As I've said in the 'partner's looks' thread, I likes me a tall skinny guy with big nose and good jawline.
But favourite body part? Jeepers, so many to choose from! Well, the ass is pretty damn important, I'd say. I like me a little pert spankable butt. After that's the eyes. Pretty, large and interesting eyes are very important. And a very expressionistic face. Not good with telling how other people are feeling, so that's an important one for me. But yeah, I'd have to go with a guy's arse being certainly the most attractive body part.
For most essential you'd have to scoot on round to the front ;)

Although I find that I can love a man of any age and body type, I am strangely picky about my ideal man. He must be at least ten years older than me and twice my size (this isn't hard to meet...I only weigh 90lbs)--or at least big/strong enough to hold me over his head. He should have DARK hair (no exception!) and any color eyes as long as they are unique and expressive. Also nice: a manly square chin and chiseled features, weathered hands (with a soft touch), nice straight teeth, moderately hairy...with an impressive (but not so big it is painful) man-region. MAN-REGION! If he has a tan it better be from good old-fashioned manwork...I will not tolerate the idea of him visiting the tanning bed wearing flowery flip-flops. A deep voice (not scary like the allstate man, though) is also a plus...and he better have a goddamn respectable name...I can't see myself dating a "Timothy" or a "Peter" or something equally wimpy, regardless of his man-region impressiveness.
I'm too lazy to go scouring the internet in search of this person. If you happen to have a pic of my dream man I'd be delighted if you'd post it.

Physically...well, speaking as a gay, I like someone who lean. Someone who is strong, but has more whipcord-like muscles rather than big bulging ones. I'd prefer someone a few inches taller than me (I'm about 6'), and blond hair and blue eyes is preferred, though that's not incredibly important...I'm not entirely sure if that's the 'media conception' of a hot male, because I'm not entirely sure what that would be.

I`m more taken by specific features (eyes, lips, hair) than build. I only prefer that my ideal mate be taller than myself, (I`m 5"2, so 5"4+) and obviously, weigh more than me (proportional to his height). I usually don`t go for gangly types, or men gargantuan in weight or height. But I`d gladly break my preference on height if I find that he has handsome features.
I second Hugh Jackman.
But I`m not big on body types either. I prefer the face and the demeanor to body type, and I`m attracted to a LOT of different kinds of men. I don`t have a "type" or many physical specifics.

My favourite body type is the one with functional muscles. My favourite used to be surfer. Strong shoulders from paddling. Fairly defined torso due to having to propel themselves up in one go to stand up and not too bulky but defined legs as you need power to do your maneuvers.

Now I tend to go more for the martial artist type. The ones that use all their bodies (I find boxers a bit freaky with their massive arms and weedy legs). The casual martial artist doesn't usually have a lot of body mass and the muscle mass is compact rather than large. It may not even have that much definition but it gives a healthy look.
Basically anyone who looks strong rather than one who has muscles for show. Height isn't much of an issue since I have always been taller than most back in my hometown.
Forgive the violent shot but I have struggled to find a picture that isn't a body of a overly buff professional fighter

Now have all that and talk to me about sci-fi, engineering, science, random geekyness and I'll wet myself there and then. Just the body doesn't do it for me.
