View Full Version : Science Fiction anyone?

OK, I'll take a stab at a topic…who here is a SciFi junkie? I wouldn't say that I'm hardcore, but I do love my Science Fiction; books, TV, movies – SciFi and horror are my first picks.
In the arena of books I tend to read short stories mostly with an occasional novella thrown in for good measure. It's been a while, but the last book I read was one of the "Years Best Science Fiction…" series. I really should read more.
TV is where I get my daily recommended dosage from. Favorite shows are (/were);
- any of the Star Trek franchise, except DS9 (that one didn't quite click with me)
- Battlestar Galactica (simply awesome, in my book)
- Farscape (Zhaan was sexy, even moreso than Chiana)
- Firefly (a true space western)
Those are the ones that jump readily to mind. Of course there are the semi-SciFi shows like Eureka and Heroes (which I happen to love).
Movies, hmmmm I have to think here. My off-the-cuff list is;
- Aliens & Aliens II
- Pitch Black
- Star Trek Generations
I'll think of more later…
Any others?

I do mostly read sci-fi books. Not so much for the tv and movies, because usually my imagination is so much better than they put on the screen; however some do stand out as pretty good.
tv:
Heroes
Sliders
Quantum Leap
Movies:
Terminator Series
Fifth Element
Total Recall
Star Wars

Science Fiction? Oh yeah!
TV Shows:
-Firefly - Truly awesome.
-Star Trek DS9 - My favorite Star Trek, even if the end stuff with the Prophets got weird.
-Babylon 5 - My favorite multi-season Scifi show probably.
Movies:
-Serenity - A very good continuation of Firefly, even if they killed some of my favorite characters.
-Transformers - Very cool movie.
-Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick - It has Riddick. What else does it need?
Books (A sample at least):
-Most books by Timothy Zahn, especially the Conquerors' Trilogy
-Some Star Wars novels, especially the X-Wing Series
-Honor Harrington series by David Weber
-March series by David Weber and John Ringo
-1632, 1633 (only two I've read in the series) by Eric Flint

Yes, a pretty big sci-fi fan although not quite so much any more. Heinlein, Asimov, more recently Baxter and Neal Stephenson -- you should all go read Neal Stephenson's "The Cryptonomicon" right now if you haven't read it yet, it is my favorite novel of all time (although strictly speaking it's not sci-fi). You can read the first chapter here for free: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I don't particularly like reading sci-fi, though.

Stargate is pretty good. Forgot to mention it.
At Rwyatt: You mean a actual character? Or character type? A lot of cool characters in SciFi, but that doesn't really mean I would be them. Unless you are really asking who we are most like.

I mean character type; a swashbuckling hero, mad scientist, misunderstood alien, whatever...
Me, I could see myself as the guy that makes things that the hero uses to vanquish the enemy - toiling away in a dark lab creating fantastic devices, knowing that without me the hero would be toast. Or a ship's engineer, who knows their vessel inside and out (like Geordi, or the engineer-lady on Firefly) and can rig up that "special circuit" needed to save the day.
Can you see a pattern here?
Tarrick
09-27-2007, 05:05 PM
Yes I do. And "Kaylee" was the engineer on Serenity from Firefly.
For me...hmmm....
Bounty Hunter/Investigator probably. Someone that does a lot of investigations and tracking people across space.
Fifth element was a great movie.
Though I really hated Chris Tucker. Actually, I hated Chris Tucker in every movie he was an obnoxiously noisy, fast-talking dumbass in.

TV- Doctor Who (new and classic), all Star Trek (except voyager)
Film- Brazil, Star Trek
Bionic Woman started airing last week. It was pretty awesome. Katee Sackhoff makes a good crazy evil bionic woman.

Books
Space Odessy 2001 and the next one
Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

TV
Star Trek; grew up on TOS, TNG all, DS9 mostly, Only season 2 and 3.5 for VYGR and I think they should beat enterprise in it's stupid head.
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica; reminds me of DS9 and i rember watching the original lol.
TWILIGHT ZONE, so classic
Movies
Usually not Star Trek ones
Planet of the Apes
Robocop, I think Ed-209 is an INTJ but no one believes me :)
Aliens 2
Galaxy Quest, because it makes fun of star trek
Predator
Gattaca
Empire Strikes Back
OK, here's a twist - if you could BE a character in a SciFi show/book/movie, who would you be and why?

I have a special place in my heart for Babylon 5 <sigh>. Riddick was / is just awesome.
Other TV shows:
Battlestar Galactica
Books:
Anything by Greg Bear, Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, Zelazny.
SF was the genre that first had a visceral impact on me as a young teen. I remember reading "I have no mouth and I must scream" by Ellison and scaring myself silly.

Just figured I'd see if anyone reads the same stuff as me, I never get to talk about Sci-Fi books with anybody! Not even on the internet!
I read it frequently, it really is my favorite form of entertainment, and I only take breaks when work or school have got me really busy..
I generally like a lot of post-human or far-future type stuff, lots of speculation. Wright's "Golden Age" series was mind blowing for me. I also love a good space opera, Simmons Hyperion cantos series is probably the best. Vinge has probably been the closest thing to Nostradamus we have in the 21st century, uncanny knowledge of the potentials of tech.
some authors for whom I have the utmost respect for-
John C Wright
Peter Hamilton
Vernor Vinge
Dan Simmons (genius)
Karl Schroeder
Iain M. Banks (genius)
Richard K. Morgan
Charles Stross
Jack McDevitt
Neal Stephenson (genuis)
I also have a love for the classics, like Heinlein and Asimov, but these new guys are really taking things to the next level.

Wow, so weird to hear "classical sci-fi."
Well, other than them, I really can't stand the new guys. I read some anthologies, and was left with a bitter taste in my mouth.
From the classics- my favorite is still Frank Herbert.

Sci-Fi and INTJ go hand to hand, so it seems. It's about the future (usually), so it appeals to our Ni, and it's logical, which appeals to our secondary function of Et. Can't get any better than that.

Fave shows as a kid: The X-Files and Earth 2 (this was the best show ever...NBC canceled it after one season). Also liked Quantum Leap, SeaQuest, Star Trek: TNG.
Movies: Donnie Darko, Contact
Books: Asimov, Bruce Coville

Yeah, I bet most of my favorite authors are all probably INTJ or INTP.
wow, i just had a really good idea for amazon. They could have a search for books feature based on author personality types, so people could read stories perfectly suite for their personalities! that would be interesting!

Yes! Loved Diamond Age, loved Cryptonomicon, I even liked Zodiac! I tried to get through the "The Baroque Cycle" series, but it was too dense, I plan to try again in a couple years. The man is flat out brilliant.

From my personal experience, having an interest in science fiction is a bit like gold hunting: lots of digging, scouring and sifting through heaps of worthless dirt. But when you do find something of value, you really hit the jackpot.
Among the best, I'd say the Dune books definitely deserve a special mention for their depth, complexity and scope.

Yes, I used to have this problem, but have more recently been able to find the gold pretty easily ( i know what authors to stay away from or gravitate towards)
ie a quote on the cover from another author whose work I enjoyed, or amazon reccomendations

Oh I do love SF...:)
Books: my favourite authors are probably Le Guin and Ballard...
I don't really watch SF movies... although, obviously 2001 is amazing...and Tarkovsky's Solaris...
T.V.: I adore Battlestar Galactica!!...and so, with regards to the 'whichSci-fi character would you like to be' question... I'm going to sound really weird, by professing my total adoration of Admiral Helena Cain...she's a litle bit crazy, a little bit evil, but I just can't help but love her:)

Well that certainly rains on my parade. :(
Folks,
We have had many tens of thousands of e-mails from people and the letter flood is just beginning to bite (hilariously, spam traps here tend to pick up things like 'medication' and treat quite a lot of the mail as spam. If we switch them off, we get all the spam too - hurrah!). All this good will is appreciated, although there is no way on gods earth that I will be able to reply to even a fraction of you. I would like people to bear in mind that I have been diagnosed quite early after an MRI scan and a whole afternoon of tests. While nothing is certain, one does not have to be unduly optimistic to believe that I will be around and, hopefully, working for some time to come. My
advice, therefore, is to calm down and await events. I have not actually gone, yet.
As an aside, thanks to everyone who bought Making Money making it, we understand, the best selling hardback fiction of 2007. At least that's what the figures say. It will be interesting to see if the papers say it too.
Happy Hogswatch!

FAVORITE MOVIES
Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi
Alien and Aliens (great one liners)
The Matrix (the first one)
Bladerunner
The Terminator and Terminator 2
TV
Heroes
Star Trek (the original series)

The Bionic Woman (the original series)

Stepehen King's The Stand
COMIC BOOKS (I'm a Marvel Girl)

New Mutants
Didn't get into and of the other spin-offs though and largely disappointed by the movies.
Is anyone else excited about the new Star Trek movie set to come out in Dec.?
I understand that Zachary Quinto (Sylar from Heroes) is supposed to play Spock. But Leonard Nimoy is in it also as Spock so I guess there is going to be some sort of flashback or flash forward thing happen. The trailer is a HUGE tease and gives no hints.
