INTJ and Temperament

I have read that INTJ's are associated with the Melancholy-Choleric temperament. I have seen the description of such combination of temperaments on various websites and books, and honestly, I find many discrepancies. However, others say INTJ's are Mel-Phlegs, but, people with such temperaments are said to be "extremely detail-conscious," and INTJ's, as a general rule, do not like too many details. Also, what would happen with an INTJ with a low I and a high J? He's more of a leader!

How would you classify the INTJ in the Hippocratic temperament theory? Are they Mel-Chlors or Mel-Phlegs? Could an INTJ be a Chlor-Mel?

I have many traits of a Melancholy-Phlegmatic, but I am more of a driver and I am not extremely detailed. I have scored Melancholy-Choleric on most tests.

Anyways... I got those abbreviations from TimLaHaye's book, Why You Act The Way You Do. And no, they are not my favorite, but I just like the fact that they are shorthand. The name Chlor-Mel sounds like some kind of chemical formula and San-Chlor like some sort of cough medicine.

Now Mel-Chlors and Chlor-Mels are even! I believe the difference lies in your I, your T, and your J. If your I is lower and your J is higher, you're most likely to score Chlor-Mel, whileas if you are very introverted and less-structured/casual (leaning more to a P), then you're more likely to be a Mel-Phleg. If both your T and your J are higher, you're likely to be a Mel-Chlor. The difference between Chlor-Mels and Mel-Chlors is really the amount of extraversion and conscentiousness. That is why INTJ's vary. Character can easily change (as the percentage of your type letters can change), but not your type.

It's very interesting that I posted this same question on the INTP and INFJ forums...I noticed that, at the INTP forums, they would just tell me their type: "Phlegmatic-Melancholy," while others discussed the theory's relation with the MBTI. At the INFJ forum, very few people would even comment! Only at the INTJ Forum have I seen so much direct participation with a copying-pasting of the results! =)

The Melancholic / Choleric

The melancholic-choleric is also a leader with the potential to accomplish great works. However, where the choleric-melancholic is driven by the challenge and the opportunity, the melancholic-choleric is inspired more by the nobility of the task. The introverted nature of the melancholic, combined with the focused and unempathic nature of the choleric, can result in an individual who is highly motivated by noble ideals (even humanitarian ones), but who prefers to work alone, rather than with people. The melancholic side of both temperament mixtures results in the project being organized, ethical, and high-minded, while the choleric aspect is the driving and demanding force.
If you are melancholic-choleric, you are somewhat less pragmatic (or utilitarian) than a pure choleric, just as persevering and determined, and with a greater emphasis on the ideal. Likely to be motivated by the most noble and demanding of causes, you are capable of founding a humanitarian society, composing a symphony, founding a school, or discovering a cure. You are organized, perfectionist, introspective, driven, and moody (though less so than a pure melancholic). You will be less active than a choleric-melancholic and less extraverted, more internally focused.
But your weaknesses include a tendency to excessive self-criticism and criticism of others, being dismissive or overly judgmental, exhibiting a tendency to self-absorption, and possessing an untrustful and controlling nature. You tend to be inflexible, can bear grudges for a long time and may be prone to discouragement. It seems that the INTJs here can go either way, from what I'm seeing: Choleric Melancholy, or Melancholy Choleric.

I looked at both results, and there is a difference: Melancholy dominants seem to be pessimistic and seem to focus on the negative, while Choleric dominants seem to be overbearing and narcissitic.

I am a Choleric Melancholy, and it surprises me at just how true such an personality fits.

As a child, I took these "humors" tests at least ten times and usually came out 95-98% melancholic (it seems that's associated with ISTJ).

The quiz was interesting and pretty accurate, although I thought I would have more phlegmatic tendencies. I often find the "Cholr" side of me fighting against the "Mel", particularly since I see my Melancholy side predominantly as a weakness.

there's a book titled Personality Plus by Florence Littauer that explains really well what the four temperaments mean and how different blends can get along with each other. it's pretty interesting stuff.
