I tried to add an avatar that was a link to a web page, but it has not accepted it and won't allow me to make changes. Up pops a message about invalidity.

Try using this one I modified for you:

You can quote my post and then copy and paste the photobucket link as a custom avatar, or copy the image to your own computer and do it that way.

Yeah, that's way too large to use on this forum. The forum automatically rejects all avatars that are over 20kb and not exactly 115 pixels wide and 145 pixels high. We realize not all members have the software or technical capabilities to make custom avatars that fit those requirements, so we have provided an avatar forum in case anyone needs assistance.

I resized the one you linked to a size that should work:
