View Full Version : Where do you like to sit?
It is said (don't ask me for a source) that more introverted people tend to like sitting on the side of a room or a corner of the room more than in the middle of it.
In lectures, I personally like to sit on the side, or right next to the aisle in the middle of the room, pretty much always as far back as possible. (unless the room is huge, and sitting in the back will prevent me from hearing my prof)
I like the vantage point that gives me. I see everyone else, and people usually don't see me. It's great for avoiding people I know and don't want to sit with
Anyone else have a habit of sitting at the same area all the time? Where, and why?

I like to sit towards the front and off to one side. *Close enough to see & hear everything perfectly, and close enough to the teacher to get attention first if I need help, but not in the direct line of sight. :D

Back row, generally. I don't know exactly why, but I think it has to do with me not liking to be put on the spot. All of my classes this semester have more circle-ish seating, though, so I don't really have a preference.

Generally down the back of the class. Likewise I like to see everything..
Wow I never thought about why I don't sit up the front.

Toward the back and off to one side, close to an aisle. Never know if there might be a fire

It's completely dependent upon how excited I am to be there that day. :P

I tend to sit in the middle row and off to one side in lectures. It was the same back in school when we didn't have a seating plan. It's close enough to the front so that I can actually hear what the tutor is saying (for some reason people seem to like to chat all the way through lectures even though they are paying for them :-?) but also out of eyeline because I hate making eye contact and being forced to answer questions on the spot.
There was a time, when I was a kid, that I liked to sit at the front because as you know that's where all the 8-) kids sit. Unfortunately I had real trouble convincing my friends to sit anywhere near the front. ::)
Edited to add: In social situations I tend to sit in the middle, as well, so that others can talk across me. I don't know if anyone else has found this but, if I sit at the end of a row of friends I tend to get excluded from the conversation.

i like to sit with my back resting against a tree (preferably one with a smooth bark) by a stream or pond
in social situations i try and strike a balance between being as far away as possible while still witnessing the goings-on

Sitting on the side (as per MBTI Question) picks up on the I, basically is part contingency planning for an escape. But more to do with the claustrophobia aversion to being in large groups. I think it’s a control thing, when in a large group you have less control on the situation.

I like to sit along an isle for an easy escape route, and it frees up one side without a sitting partner. If I am interested or it is a smaller group, I may sit towards the front, but am more likely to sit about 2/3 to 3/4 towards the back.

I consciously choose to sit in a position that forces me to pay attention. ADD is my nemesis.

Similar to biased ADD is my worse nemesis. So generally I like sitting in the back, but in really large rooms (that usually have a walk way separating 2 clusters of seating areas anyway), I like to sit in the middle of the second row of the back cluster. The front cluster is too geeky for me, I can't deal with their "OMG! ask me, ask me!" The group in the far back just never stop chatting/playing computer games. Once, these guys in front of me were watching these really funny videos on youtube... I was stifling laughs through the whole lecture.

In social situations I'll sit where ever, it really depends on how big the group is. In REALLY large groups, I'll just sit next to one or two buddies I can sorta fall in and out of conversation with but never between two people who especially like to talk to each other. In small groups I can pretty much sit anywhere, if I was comfortable to go to an outing with a small group of people, it means I know I can slip into easy conversation.

Here's a picture of my lecture hall... hopefully you can tell there's a row of empty space b/w the back cluster and the front cluster.

I tend to sit in front or middle row. Why is that you might ask? I have to tape my lectures, its really hard to keep track what previous has been talking about. Especially, nightclass really easy to forget things.

I really should tape lecture classes. Now they have powerpoints to go with it too, though, and that's a worse problem for me. My visual memory seems entirely trapped in my subconscious.

Let me land you a hand on this one. Try to find a digital tape recorder, but at the same time can listen to music options or fm radio. This way, you get all your benefits. Currently, I have my trusty Meizu m6 mp3 player; allow u to view pics, fm radio/recorder, voice recorder, mp3 audio: wma, mp3, wav., ogg. etc., and 2 videogames.
My memory is not really good, but visual side is. Yeah, we J's tend to make alot of lists.

I've always wanted to tape my lectures. Next time I buy a laptop, I'm definately getting one with a built-in webcam. I have a pretty good memory with visual things too. I could almost say I have photographic memory. I remember things in whole pictures. So making cue cards and flowcharts have been giving me a huge boost in studying. I'm horrible with keeping things people say in my head though. Things just go in one ear and out the other. I have such trouble getting as much out of my lectures as I should.

Great example of recording lectures. Remembered that lecture from 2 weeks ago, well you've got it saved somewhere; nice to grabbed it out before exams, quizes, etc. My dad told me, "Geez you got poor memory, go tape recorded your lectures in class." I've done this like 4 years now, of course the oddball on my end is no one else is taping it too :(. Hey someone's loss is another one's benefit.

I have always been a front row sitter (or near the front).
I don't like distractions.

It really depends on the professor with me. If I particularly like the professor or s/he's teaching a subject that's within one of my fields of expertise, I'll usually sit in the front. However, if I don't care for the professor or for some other reason don't care to add any input or ask questions, I'll usually sit next to a wall and facing the door.
I do seem to have a defensive instinct where I always try to sit with my back in a corner or toward a wall and facing the entrance to the area (provided that I'm not interested in engaging as noted previously). It's completely irrational, as the probability of someone sneaking up on me and doing me in is very low, yet I insist upon doing so whenever possible.

How about this, I normally or rarely turn my back when someone is speaking to me. I don't know why, just not comfortable doing it. As of respect, I will do it, if they are in my other classes more often times.

That's true. Also, power-hungry or self-assured people are said to choose seats where they can easily see the door, so that they are the first to know if someone enters. I like to sit in the middle of the column nearest the door at all times.
I've noticed that I also sit closer to the back of the classroom in classes where I have no need to pay attention, such as math, so that I can participate less. Depending on the degree of ease with which I pass the class, I sit in different places. During lectures, however, I like to sit in the front row, possibly because my first lecture was given to me by a very interesting but very quiet professor, and now I want to be in the front to catch every word.

Off to the side near the door - so there's no one on one side of me and I can leave if I need to.

side of front row in pchem (I do enjoy that class plus it's an 8am and it's harder for me to focus being in the back - not a morning person -oddly enough a few extroverts sit in the middle/back of that class),
middle side in physics,
back in econ (with fellow introverted chem majors, I think at least one of them is an INTJ),
physics lab - our group's (well my partner and I - fellow chem major again) base station is in the back corner,
inorganic lab - wherever I need to be.
cafeteria - back away from the entrance, middle away from people ideally if I'm going down there myself....hide behind a new york times is fall-back solution.
I preferred to sit at the back to get a good overview of the class.
In trains and buses I prefer to sit next to the window and as far away from people as possible. What always drove me insane was people that would sit really close to me even when the train was virtually empty....I need my personal space....

Yes, as many people stated before me, I almost always sit in the back row of classroom, generally leaning towards one side of the room. I also prefer that there is at least one seat in between me and the person next to me, as I like to have a large area of personal space. I choose to sit in the back so that I can (1) Observe all of the occurrences that take place in the room (this probably has to do with the NT drive for omniscience), (2) so that if bored, I can engage in my own private more stimulating activities without being noticed, and (3) since people in my school seem to enjoy my irritated reactions when they unexpectedly poke or otherwise touch me from behind, I will sit in the back row so that nobody will be able to accomplish this.

I almost always sit at the last row, so that I can do whatever I want without others noticing or commenting. I get aisle seats, because I find it distracting to be surrounded by people when seating in the middle of the row. People used to get offended when I wouldn't sit with them, but now I think they're more used to it...

I know exactly know what you mean, here is a great example it will even make your head explode. While sitting in the middle, the person on the left is talking to you [mostly course related stuff because I know that person from another course] and the person on the right is talking to you [mostly with the current course related stuff], then the person behind you[Talking to you about the class we needed in order to graduate]. Its a gift/curse of an INTJ, but we are great Information HUBs, without offending anyone and managed to mute on information flow at one side, then continue on to the next person, lastly the last person. Most people can't handle that way too much information.

It depends on the situation. *If I'm new at a church, I like to sit in the back to one side. *If I've been in a group a while, I will sit near the front. *If I'm in a function at work, I like to sit in the front to encourage the other employees not to be afraid of the activity. *It makes the speaker feel better (and iI have to admit it scores brownie points with my boss).

In lectures, I like sitting at front. More concentration, less distraction. I love the concentration I get when I sit up front. It is like if I'm in a new world. But when I'm at back, it is usually because the class is boring or I decided to distract myself intentionally.
In other places, I prefer seats near the wall. It gives me a sense of comfort.

Usually I just grab the closest seat to the door that isn't intruding on anyone. So at a party I might think if the person I sit to is expecting someone and thus I might not sit there, or on a train I just sit at the closest open seat unless it is too much effort to get to that seat.

I like to sit where I've got a vantage point of everyone else, windows, and I don't have my back facing a door.

In this hall, I would probably choose to sit up on the catwalks above the spotlights, given I can get up there stealthily without too much risk of falling to my death.

I usually sit in front and to the side if I can help it.
I hate sitting in the back because there's where the chatty people sit and this way I can tune them out better from the front (and listen to them when they give an answer). Also my few friends in some classes all sit in the front and on the same side as me right by the door, which is nice at times.
