View Full Version : What kind of dog would you get?

Hi everyone.
I've never had a dog but I've always wanted a border collie because they're the smartest dogs on the planet and I just really like the way they look. If you could have any kind of dog, what would it be and why? If you have a dog, what kind is it?

Here's a pic :D

I've dogsitted a border collie for a week. She was very needful of attention and omega with other dogs. She also would chase the chickens, terrifying those poor birds.

Go to the pound or Humane Society and look at the mutts. Find one that you like - breed doesn't necessarily determine the personality of the dog. Shelties are supposed to be very intelligent but ours can't find a treat if you hide it (while she's watching) under a napkin.

I have a border collie, he's awesome. They are a high energy breed so expect to spend a lot of time throwing balls and walking them. If they are bored they can be very destructive and they aren't great around small children.

Maybe I'd get a Pomeranian. Love the beady little eyes, sta-puff form, and the way they walk. They look like demented foxes. Plus, a Pomeranian at the end of a leash would go well with my pink slingbacks. Which is really the best reason for getting a pet.

But generally, dogs are so needy, they somehow make me worry. I'd feel terrible leaving one alone all day.

I have a very interactive cat, that's just about the right speed for me.

I don't see myself ever getting a dog. They are way too much work.

If I do ever give in I'll probably go with a greyhound rescue. They're very lovely and only need a minimal amount of exercise each day. The rest of the time they lounge around like an overgrown cat.

If I had money to throw away I'd get a Saluki , Irish Wolfhound, or Scottish Deerhound.

I like to travel too much to own a pet, but I adore animals. I live with some friends who have a german shepherd/husky mix and I frequently pet sit a 150 lb bull mastiff, both of whom I love. If I were going to get a dog, it'd probably be a great dane, or two.

Another friend who had 8 huskies was trying to adopt out a few of them because they were fighting, and if I'd had a stable home and income at the time I would have adopted this beautiful pure white girl named Callisto!

Even a mongrel with a Wolfhound cross is rare (although much less rare than the breed itself).

I've never had a dog before, i got a kitten about 7 months ago and that's about it. If i could afford it and take care of it, etc i would definitely get a HUSKY. Maybe an amber&white one; they rock. I'd also have a running buddy, which is a big plus.

My family has a miniature poodle, which is a great dog (no shedding and relatively small). I think that I'd get a mutt from the pound if I got a dog, but if I was to get a breed, it'd be one that doesn't get lonely very easily, as I'm pretty busy generally.

I have a lab x border, but he's got the laid-back personality of the lab and the smarts of the collie. He's super easy to train, but I've only had him since he was older, so I'd imagine they'd be pretty high energy. He's such a submissive sweetheart, but as someone said, that temperament is really more an individual thing than breed thing.

My mom has a border x greyhound mix and I'm telling you NOT to get one. She's getting much better, but she's got 2x the hyperness, gets into all kinds of messes, and if she gets out she RUNS, and runs, and runs. There's absolutely no way you'd get her on two legs, she's obviously incredibly fast.

My friends have had huskies- they are real escape artists, can't stand being alone/away from their owners, will kill cats they aren't raised with, shed like 90, and need lots of exercise and a dog pack. They really are made for being a constant companion in the cold arctic and being put to work on a regular basis. And malamutes especially can have will of absolute IRON. Please think twice before looking to these breeds as just a cool-looking pet.

If you need to ask then don't get a border collie. They are the smartest dogs and that means they need a lot of attention, its just like keeping a toddler entertained. If you don't give them that time they will misbehave. They are also quite energetic having been bred to chase sheep so you will need to exercise it a lot. Its not a beginners dog yet beginners are often attracted by the idea of having the smartest dog without realizing what that entails.

Go to a shelter and let the dog pick you. I went in looking for a hound (coonhound, bloodhound, something of that nature), because I already had a redbone coonhound and thought that he'd like another dog like himself as a companion. So I went to the shelter to look at another redbone - who was utterly crazy, btw - but in the cage next to the him, there was a three-legged black lab-Chow mix. He wasn't much to look at, but I absolutely fell in love with his personality. And my old hound-dog seemed to like him too. So go in with an open mind.

Be careful: breed standards are useful generalizations, but each individual dog has his/her own personality. Make absolute SURE you can give this animal a loving home for its entire lifetime - which is probably going to be 10 years or more. If you can't make that commitment, then do not get a dog.

I abhor little dogs, they yap and generally seem to have no personality, save my best friend's mini weiner. I'm a pit bull kind of person, and other intjs should really look into them as a breed. They are extremely smart, loyal, dedicated, they want to make you happy, but they are stubborn as all hell. Gotta love it. :) Of course there are a lot of misinformed people out there, but I know we're smarter than that here.

Thor,
Don't worry, I've done my research on dogs especially border collies. All I do around dogs is give them attention. I'm a runner and I play frisbee. When I do get a dog (probably not for another decade :() I will probably do it when I have nothing else to do but care for him/her. Plus I like the challenge of having a smart pet that I need to keep up with. I've put more thought into this than you'd think. I'm also training as a psychologist and considering going into animal psychology.

In my province, it's illegal to breed or sell pit bull pups. You can get an adult (ie. one that was born before the ban, from a shelter, say), but it needs to be muzzled at all times in public.

Border Collies are indeed very cool. My first and only dog was a Golden Retriever however (he passed away this summer ), so I'm partial to them. Also very smart and 10% more wuvable!

I recently watched Serpico, a movie from the 70's where Al Pacino's character has a sheepdog. I'd imagine they'd be a nightmare for somebody who get's annoyed by shedding, but they're just so awesome!

i have two;

1. half Jack Russell, half wirehair terrier. she is the love of my life...she is ornery, she is loving, she is independent, but she communicates her feelings to me with her look and attitude. she stepped on a broken beer bottle yesterday; went all the way through her front foot. hadda stitch her up, made me sick, been sweating the outcome. she's doing fine...no apparent nerve or tendon damage...lots of tlc. liver and white, long hair...

2. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

pup, 9 months. he's just now getting his stride...he's grey/black/brown/white and some blends...dang good dog, but gonna be big. like having a 'left arm' with the JR as my right....

nothing like a dog. when i grow up, i want to be at least half the man my dogs think i am.

ps, both are pound pups. i hadda try several times to get a dog that woont kill chickens. nothing wrong with a pound pup...i want 'heart' in a dog, and i don't care if it is a 10# mutt or a 100# mutt. i don't want anything with papers, dogs included.

if you get a dog, pm me, and i'll tell you what i think is the easiest way to house train one; it's common knowledge. good luck; hope you get one that 'fits ya'.

I'm hoping to acquire property in a rural area next year and, if that happens, I plan to get a large dog - a Rhodesian Ridgeback most likely. I first read a description of its temperament and behavior from this site: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Some characteristics I found: independent thinkers, loyal but cautious and aloof with strangers, stubborn, stable temperament, rarely barks, versatile enough to be a couch potato at home and athletic outdoors, and not likely to track mud into the home a whole lot (they've been described as prissy). I'm still in the process of researching. So far however, I find all the pluses and minuses appealing and think I could relate very well to a dog with such qualities. In fact, I'm a lot like the Rhodesian Ridgeback in those respects, only I shed a lot more (long hair).

My aunt had an Australian Shepherd (kind of similar to a Border Collie) and he was a wonderful dog. EXTREMELY affectionate and attentive, and moderately intelligent.

I had a Golden Retriever/Irish Setter mix growing up.. i'm kind of partial to them.

Large Dog - i'd get a pureblood Doberman, German Shepherd, or Weimareiner
Small Dog - A weiner dog, or a Corgi (i'm not a fan of small dogs at all btw)

Ok, I've actually owned a border collie. And quite frankly, I don't think I could ever own another breed.

As for owning one, yes they need a lot of attention. In their "teenage" years (before full adulthood) you can pretty much write off anything that isn't bolted down in your backyard. They're breed to herd, so if it moves they'll round it up (thus, our backyard was a no go zone for our poor white persian cat at the time). But never aggressive, just physically affectionate.

As for actually getting a border collie. You're in for much more than a "good looking dog". But they're very rewarding as long as you're willing to put the time into them.

He is loving, and caring, very playful yet a lazy cuddle bum too. He's territorial, and checks on the kids before bed. He isn't happy unless the whole family is home. Just perfect for us :)
