I have had an optical mouse for a while and I just got a laser mouse - a Microsoft sidewinder to be exact - and I love it, especially the fact that this particular one can change dpi on the fly with special buttons on it. Does anyone else use a laser mouse? Do you like it more than a regular old optical? I won't even ask if any of you prefer rubber ball mice over optical or laser...

The realtime dpi control sounds handy, but i'm perfectly happy with my cheapo Genius Netscroll optical mouse. I don't think you neccesarily get what you pay for when it comes to mice.

What exactly (apart from being easier to hype up) are the advantages of a Laser driven mouse, over a standard LED based one?

Honestly, I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes. I do know that at 2000 dpi it is a lot more sensitive then a generic optical but I'm not sure if you would be able to tell the difference between a cheap laser and a cheep led mouse.

What surprises me is how many people still use rubber ball mice. Up until this year, my high school used almost exclusively rubber ball mice, and people kept stealing the balls, so they glued the cover on, making them impossible to clean. LED mice are so cheap it is stupid to buy rubber ball based mice IMO.

I like good mice and keyboards lol. I buy an 80USD mouse every 2 months. My keyboard was $170USD...

I think most people would never tell the difference between the different mice and the difference is only apparent for people like advanced gamers. For a long time I thought was a mouse was a mouse until I started getting very good and started gaming a lot. It was then that I noticed tiny jitters and inaccuracies in very fast and precise mouse movements. It seems that cheap mice usually can't keep up with the fastest movements of fast paced and pinpoint accurate games. Quality mice however seem to do a better job but I would only advise getting one if you are an avid gamer or play enough games they you are fast and good enough to control a mouse to pixel point accuracy and can see the jitters and inaccuracies.

I use a Logitech VX Revolution and I can certainly tell the difference between laser mice, optical mice, and ball mice. The laser mice have by far the most accurate feeling, then the ball mice and the optical mice trailing behind them. I've never liked using optical mice, they just feel too erratic for me and I don't feel like it is accurate enough for me. Ball mice do have a nice feel to them, but I do much prefer laser mice because of their extreme accuracy because that allows me the most control for photo editing.

Ah yes, the elusive laser mouse. These cats ate some, and acquired their powers.

Agreed there. Also, I would get a Das Mechanical Keyboard (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), but all the keys blanked out so you can learn to touch-type faster. I'm going to get one soon. :)

I play around with photo editing and the laser mice are very nice for detail work. Its nice to be able to draw a line and it not end up like a small sine wave. Thing is though, a good ball mouse can do the same thing. Its just that they are a pain keeping clean.

Though the thought of a mouse with a fricken laser in its head pleases my inner Dr. Evil.

I use the Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 and it is awesome. I paid around $80 for it, and I don't regret the decision.

The biggest difference between the two types is the tracking speed/dpi. Laser mice are at least twice as accurate and can work on the vast majority of surfaces.

I much prefer the optical mouse to the laser, the optical ones are one thing but I find the laser mice are much more difficult to manage, they're always blasting me with their weaponized laser feet when I try to feed them. But serious, I've heard the laser ones break down sooner.

I hadn't heard that laser mice break down sooner. My laser mouse has lasted me 2 years now and it works like new even though I've used it heavily. Optical mice are just so inaccurate and jumpy, I honestly don't see any advantage to them. I can tell the difference between an optical mouse and laser mouse very quickly.
