This toy has come up more than once on this forum, it deserves its own poll. *
For those who can solve it, post your record time! Be honest! *;)
For those who can't, keep trying!
For those who never tried, go buy one!

i just bought one.
I just need the time to solve it.
And I'm going to.
I swear. I will do it.

Is it possible to solve it by myself? My friends tell me it's impossible, and they found the solution online instead.
I managed to master the cube (in a sense) when it first came out. The first time took me 6 weeks *to solve - I used to go to bed and saw cube-things floating around in my mind. (Do not remember the *year but must have been early to mid 80's? Well before the days of the internet).
Eventually got my time down to just under 2 minutes.
The 4x4 is a different beast - at best took me 20-25 minutes.
We had our niece and nephew (9 and 15 years old) to visit over Christmas - they were shocked that Uncle Iiia could "do the (3x3) cube" albeit a bit slower nowadays, down to around 4 minutes.
The recent championships show how the understanding of the cube has come on - I am sure I heard 19 seconds mentioned. Might have to have another look.

I've been able to solve them since they came out back in the early 80s.
My average time is between 3 and 4 minutes. My best time is probably slightly under 3 minutes. I keep a cube on my desk at school and my students will ask me if I did it. Then I'll show off for them. When I'm really concentrating, I'll do the last series of moves (about 15-20 twists) without looking at the cube - I just look them in the eye and toss them the finished cube while they gape in amazement. :P

My record time is also about 3-4 minutes. Yep. Solving a Rubik's is a good way to amaze the norms.
If Will Smith can do it, I can do it.

When I was 9 years old I solved it in 10 minutes......by pulling off the stickers and "rearranging" them back on the cube. I would fix one side at a time and then show my dad. then I would disappear into the closet because as everyone knows, the closet is the perfect spot to solve that thing.

You, my friend, are awesome.

Once I could do it. No idea of the time, but I was relatively fast. I'll have to find one and re-learn. ;)

It solving a cube that hard? I solved it several times in my youth, and I thought it was a good challenge but not too hard.

yes! I did that too! I also had a little sparkly key-chain one that I broke apart and reassembled as solved.
Now I want to get one and try to actually solve it the right way.

I just learned how to solve it. It takes me about 3-3.5 minutes. I would love to learn how to solve it in under 30 sec., but I can't bring myself to put in the time for that.
If anyone's interested, I solved it by memorizing the solution on this site: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Haven't tried in years, but I'm pretty sure I still can't. My visual/spatial intelligence fails me in this particular task.

No. My INTJ dad can though, and fairly quickly.
I rarely have any drive to even attempt to solve them. I mostly find Rubik's Cubes amusing because of how they are made. I get high on the very essence of their construction. :lovestruck:

Just acquired Rubik 360 today , your humble servant shall make an attempt to solve it :)

It's all about technique, not so much about spatial intelligence. I can sum up the technique by saying: solve it in layers not faces.

I can solve it. I don't go out to break any records though. Typically, from a solved position, I will mess it up and work on it a few minutes at a time over a several days. If I really sit down to solve it, I can usually do in less than 15 minutes.
I don't use any specific technique. I just think it through backwards and then proceed forward. Honestly, I get more fun out of it by creating patterns and then solving the patterns.
I will say this - once all the corners are in position, you will need 12 or fewer moves to solve the cube.

I used to be decent at such things as a child, chess too, but it kind of vanished over the years. So unfortunately, nope :(
I tend to get overly anxious when testing myself logically, though. I want to perform well to prove myself I'm capable, which means I am preoccupied with the thought of performing well, which makes me perform bad :freak: this has caused me much struggle with mathematics, chess, strategy games, etc.
Perhaps in a safe, calm environment, with enough time...

Tried when I was around 9 years old, I got rather far but never finished it. I should buy a new one and finish it...

Hm.
My mind is not Rubik's Cube-inclined. But it is inclined towards Rubik's Cubes.
If I were to sit down and try to solve one, it would take me a long (long, long) time.
But I am very fond of the thinking/manipulating involved. If I ever choose to 'learn' it, I should be a quick solver.
Also, though I am quite impressed with some peoples' skills, I do not think that the ability to solve a Rubik's Cube is in-and-of-itself impressive.
