View Full Version : how do you spend your free time?

the idea of the thread is to get ideas for things to do in your free time.
free time meaning the time you're not working, not attending classes in college, not studying, not doing household chores... it's the time that's left when all your obligations are fulfilled (note that an obligation doesn't imply a lack of pleasure when it is being fulfilled). it's the time that's free for activities of your choice and your choice only.
also,
do those activities involve other people? are they actively involved? is their mere presence important?
how often do you do them?
and how much satisfaction do you derive from doing them?

I collect movies. Not major block busters but actual film noir I have several catalogs and on line services that I haunt, my latest addition is an Australian TV mini series that was never shown in the US. Titled "Changi" the story of the Secret Nine and how they survived as prisoners of war in Japan at the infamous prison camp Changi. I do this collecting alone and online with other collectors, we suggest titles back and forth and trade or buy from one another I have yet to meet someone who is as passionate about film as I am or even willing to read sub titles, as most of the movies I find exceptional are in a language other then American. I even prefer sub titles on my British, Irish, Scottish, Australian, their accents are hard for me to catch sometimes.

I draw. It's work actually. But if I had freetime I would be drawing anyway. So it all works out.
Oh, and reading. Would say video games as well, but again, would actually be considered work. Given that drawing art for them and playing them are different, but it's all fun.

Reading, mostly, or using the intertubes. Occasionally writing. And I guess track and XC count.

creating something on the computer, whether it is on a website or a graphic, or answering a technical question... that keep me busy..
I recently tried to spend time outside of my nest (home) but I get bored because I don't know many people and I don't like to mingle with whoever... so that said the computer has really become my best friend ever, so my free time is spent in front of my computer... until someone decides to rescue me :flirt:

Reading, writing, surfing the web, chatting to people online, playing sports, walking the dog, watching movies, cooking (part chore and part hobby), traveling.
I have a lot of free time, I do many of those things daily or weekly. I spend a great deal of my free time alone by choice.

The internet, mostly.. godlikeproductions.com is by far my most visited site.
Also enjoy gaming... play crysis warhead right now, like playing console emulated games on the SNES, PSX, and PS2 as well.. played suikoden 2 a few weeks back, became my second favorite RPG.. enjoy downloading high defintion movies and shows such as Prison Break and using my PC to output them to my HDTV.
Read the course and study up on my spiritual journey/self improvement not often enough...
If I did find the right person and she did try to drag me out to do stuff, I wouldn't be totally averse to the idea though.. but in my default state, I'm an introvert all the way, and since I don't live in the mountains, or next to a lake or forest (at the moment), that leaves the internet and other home related things at the moment.

The past few months I've been reading a lot of literary theory, and even though it is for class I find that really relaxing.
I like to keep my input/output activities balanced, so I post a private blog about learning and applying the theories I read. I like having a visual reference to my thoughts without exposing them to the world at large...not that my weblog would be particularly popular or anything.
Thankfully, I have a close friend (ESFJ) who helps me get "out" and do stuff, like movies, plays, concerts, etc.
At the end of the day, to unwind, I find pre-1990s sitcoms very relaxing.

silly rabbit...
eh I read and write a lot. I often take my computer, a notebook w/ pen, and a book or two to a favorite restaurant type place where I can get my own free refills on soda and I'll spend hours there writing, whether it's expanding stories I've already started or brainstorming new ones, playing on the forum (I get free internet there), researching various things that grab my interest on the web, reading whichever book I feel like reading at the time, sometimes making notations in the margins, often pausing to look up something that came to mind while reading. I also sing in my free time so some time is spent in rehearsals and concerts. If I had a darkroom I'd be more active with my photography, but as I cringe handing over my roll of film to a lab, I'm hesitant to collect too many rolls. I'm also trying to teach myself basic French & Arabic with some books and CDs I have (which I haven't been great about listening to or working on lately). Sometimes I try to practice playing the guitar. I go to various events at some friends' churches, even though I'm not religious by any means. I design clothes and floorplans for fun and stash them away. And sometimes I watch TV while I research stuff online and write out ideas that arise at the time. I can't do one thing at a time, it drives me nuts. Even just listening to music while I do most of this is very helpful. I also have a volunteer job that takes up about 15 hours per week, I used to volunteer for 40 hours per week, but can't do that with my job now. I also help some college and psych. major students with their research papers (proofreading, suggesting spots to improve analysis or support, help with research if someone is really in a bind, etc.). I proofread lessons for a friend's dad, too, who teaches in a faith based dorm. hmm...that may be it...oh I sometimes make jewelry. And I travel as much as possible, do Sudoku and crosswords, and go to physical therapy.

i used to collect music, mostly vinyl. i remember visiting the record shop multiple times a week, listening to as much records as allowed in the store and only buying what seemed like something rather special. i was building my taste and my collection. the internet changed things quite a bit. previewing could be done online and it became more difficult to buy records in regular shops. shops were closing down, but i still had the online shop. and while the fact that getting a physical copy became more difficult, the reason to stop collecting music lies elsewhere. indeed, i've started getting the feeling that collecting music became a bit obsessive-compulsive. i got the feeling that screening the quality of music and building a collection became more important than actually enjoying the music. so i stopped collecting. nowadays, my love for music manifests itself solely through occasional downloading, which diminishes the collecting aspect in my opinion.

cooking (part chore and part hobby)
i'm beginning to enjoy cooking. what kind of dishes do you like to cook?
i wok alot. i like pasta dishes too... easy stuff.
Reading. Writing poetry and attempting to write novels. Listening to music. Theatre, playing piano.
Mostly reading.
Alone.
Pretty much what I was going to say. Yeah alone in my bedroom, sometimes I can't even be bothered to ring my wife or go down to eat. Although eventually you get hungry and you have to have contact with humans.
Edit* and drinking alone.

I brood. I also plot in way resembling slamming my head into a wall thus the brooding. It's the combination of the resulting headache and reflection on my head's chances of breaking the wall which is, of course, reality.

Adding up to my previous post, I'm building up an Information Security Portal... that is outside of this forum...
The site will be a summarization of points from all the IT Sec Books I've being reading, so is more straight to the point, and not a lot of BS or unnecessary details for professionals in my field...
I mean wording and examples are good, but too much of it drives me nuts... so I like to improvise and simplify....is kind of my own private library which will be open to the public in maybe 5 months from now.. yes its a lot of work to create and populate the data on my own...
That includes laying down the Architecture of the Site, Creating the Master Templates, Creating the different portions of the site, and most important populating the data in an easy to understand way for non-techie individuals.
Outside of that I'm getting ready to start auditing and developing test results for a few applications with a private client, so in the next few weeks I'll probably be offline...
That's how I spend my time outside of work and outside my time with my sweetie pie...
All about work, work, and work.... so I can reach my goals in time and maybe, just maybe partner up with someone to start up my own gig...

I collect movies, music, and books. In digital forms and non-digital forms. The digital forms are cheaper, though, so I tend to have more of those... :P I also help with my friend's online business, both art and coding. That falls into the "non-obligation" category as I don't really get paid and am never pressured to do anything, I just do it because it gives me an opportunity to learn and practise my skills.

depends. lately i'm pretty big into SEC College football. great way to kill a saturday (ROLL TIDE!! 11-0!)
work, in some sort of fashion consumes most of my life.. either the corporate gig or freelance contract. but it's varied. Listen to music, hang out with friends, burn some powder at the pistol range, practice bagpipes/guitar, etc.. work on cars, work out, shoot amatuer black and white photography.
I'm really glad I discovered this forum Now so that I can BAN it with my future employees LOL- it's even worse than email = zero productivity...
basically I have lot of interests but since recently joining this- my first ever forum...I'm kinda addicted ;)
Apart from music which is my ongoing staple, I can't even remember what the last infatuation was!
