I noticed that some of the links and references were replaced by '*'-s in an older thread.

E.g.:
Ah, SolitaryWalker/Bluewing! Lots of my understanding of Ni comes from his INFJ profile on *****. It's worth a read, seeing as INFJs and INTJs are so closely related through domNi.

What was the problem with those references?

There were so many references/links to 'some other forum' that it was filtered, if I remember right. I assume that was a link to 'some other forum'

But why is it a problem to refer to other forums?

Normally forums do not allow advertising of other forums.

It wasn't about advertisement. It was about giving pointers to relevant information.

It is integrated in the posting script.

Try it: write the address of a known mbti forum and then preview of your post.

www.****************

*********** is a cool site, why aren't we allowed to link it?

Ok, there is a script. But then, why there is a script like that?

To keep you from mentioning it here.

I think the idea is to keep this site separate since it is not affiliated with the others in any way. It is explained in this thread (http://www.intjforum.com/showthread.php?t=6989).

But the links that were deleted had nothing had to to with this:

Posts continuously made about other forums will be treated as a form of advertising which is, and always has been, against our rules. This forum is not an extension of any other forum, so don't make posts here referencing events going on at other forums like everyone here is supposed to know what you're talking about. If you have an issue with another forum or its members, keep it there. Cross-forum drama is not wanted here.

Using automatic script is part of preventive policy that makes sense to me.

On occasion, you can always overcome the problem, exploiting your readers' intelligence.

By using a link to another forum.

Even linking to 'relevant' information on other forums can be problematic. If someone wants to advertise their forum, posting links to 'relevant' information on their forum at every opportunity is a good way to get exposure. We didn't originally automate link censorship, but it got to a point where hundreds of links to other forums were dropped here within a few weeks. Rather than incorporate a daily link checking routine into the forum maintenance schedule, we made the software block the problematic links altogether. While there may be some legitimate reasons to link to a thread on another forum, it isn't necessary for discussion here and it isn't worth the extra maintenance or other problems it introduces.

i have found, thru other past forums, that link other forums also opens the door for trolls, spammers, and flamethrowers...

keep these kinds of trolling does take a lot of work...

we had even started a thread on another forum on how much spam we had deleted in a day, like it was a contest (i was a moderator there)
