TV journalist can work until they drop, except if you are a woman. With very few exceptions all most all women are let go when they start to look old.
Why do they put up with it? Isn't this sexism and ageism? Why do men become more trustworthy the older they get and women just get too old?

It really depends -- women news anchors are often changed out for younger ones. Women actors are usually not considered as much as younger ones. Why? Because those industries make more by using more sexualized versions of women. Yes, it is discriminatory.
However, in some professions, like the arts, elderly women tend to get more appreciation than old men. My grandma is a sculptor in her 90s, and she's probably more feisty than I am.

News organisations exchanging the old for the young isn't sexism og ageism - it's business.

Resign yourselves to your fate? It's just how it's run, though I'd say the local newscasters here are definitely above 40.

When you understand the evolutionary basis of all human behavior, you'll know the answer to this question.
Then you'll realize just how much 'sexism' isn't really sexism at all -- it's just Mother Nature pulling our leash. Go, be one with Darwin.

Well, you know the joke of why women wear makeup and perfume?
Because their ugly and they smell bad.
And after so many years of doing both, even they can't perform miracles forever.;)

Assumptions. If I were the average person to consult, it wouldn't be like that.
I really dislike how the manager thinks, and I've heard them many times, going similar to this:
"My target audience wants this (really?!), so we give it to them (why?!), it's not really my fault that we produce (crap!!) dumbing down content."
I can't stand how indifferent is the management of the negative effects on society of their production, how they assume they know what the crowd wants (mhm, and Freud assumes all the guys want his mother), and how they won't take action against that current flow (that they induce!), but just surf on it for the profit.
Nobody wins from this, because even these profit-making people are miserable deeply inside and know how fake their lives are. I just don't get why people are so stupid.

I'm looking forward to 40+ in some ways. My mom says she felt like she "got" herself in her forties, like almost suddenly she knew what she ought to bother with and what to let lie, etc. As if she finally found a big chunk of her own operator's manual.
I'm hoping I don't randomly die at 36 or something, because I think I'll be much better suited to a more advanced age than I was to, say, being a teenager. I'm already secure in the knowledge that H.S. senior year was not my peak- how sad would that be, anyway? I think I'll really kick ass if I make it to 50.
I want to be as old as I can be while still looking hot & feeling healthy. (Which reminds me, I need to quit smoking...)

Probably because after 40 we start going rogue... ;)

Nah its because a womans value is related to her child bearing capacity. The men are programmed to ignore those past it and impregnate something younger. If I was a woman I would relish in being a hag and buy a cauldron to stir while incanting about tongue of bat.

Wow, thread title is really begging the question here.
Women are not "obselete" at age 40...wtf?

That's absolutely true. Take a look at the facts like you are a computer, no disrespect intended or sexism... it all goes down.
It is a nightmare to work surrounded by humans who's behavior changes according to X or Z day of the month. As they grow older they usually get worse. Some days happier, some days in pretty bad moods. Usually very very sensitive. Professional correction becomes a hell working with somebody so sensitive. Some develop self awareness but they hold the inner hell they feel. Besides, some can't deal with the "aging" factor, covering themselves with strange smells, weird clothes and get mad at the fact of becoming old, fat or tired.
The last words is something I've heard from the women themselves. Yes. as they become closer to menopause it is a real nightmare.
Several posts here point to the "news" field. I work on a media company and trust me, the girls are more interested on knowing your personal life and secrets (and telling them to anybody) than anything else. Also, the few guys working on news don't talk good things about their manhood. I work on the IT field with them, we complain a lot about the sensitivity of them all.

Based on the posts in this thread I'm surprised no one suggested that we should just euthanize all the women over 40. Clearly they serve no useful purpose in society now that they can't breed.

Put up with it? They get fired and society accepts this double standard so they have no protection. Of course it's sexism and ageism, both are alive and well in society.

It's because they are hired for their looks not their journalistic abilities. The ones who have lasted (both men and women) honed their skills and grabbed the good stories. They didn't sit around primping, hoping to squeeze one more smile out of a botox injection. You get in the door with your looks. You stay by making yourself into more than just another pretty face.

The only reason these things exist is because you make them exist.

First off, you have to define "journalist". Given what passes for "news" these days, I would argue that there are VERY few journalists. The only way of getting news by real, qualified journalists is by reading the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, etc... Then, look at the byline to tell whether your journalist is male or female (with some names, you may not be able to tell). If its good looking babes you seek, buy Playboy or Penthouse. If you are looking to be dumbed-down, or to have your intelligence insulted, turn on the TV. PBS news, IMHO, the only exception to this.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of popular culture, a woman of 40 has exhausted her one resource.
This is nonsense, of course... but that's GenZ America!

But what a valuble resourse it is. How much money do these industries make from the sexualizing of teens/young women? And how many teens and young women are lined up with stars in their eyes ready to cash in on their appearances? It seems like now more then ever I hear about girls and young women planning to have a career in modeling, dancing, singing etc. because they want that life style they see on TV. It's quite the beautiful cash cow these industries have created in an amoral sort of way.

Indeed. I saw a new story on the web tonight about a 22-year old woman who is auctioning off her virginity. She says she needs, the money, and this is something that has cash value.

How old are Connie Chung, Barbara Walters, and Katie Couric?
Perhaps the talentless are let go after superficiality is no longer enough, but this is no crime to me.

If I were going to play devil's advocate... I'd have to say, I think beautiful women on the whole are much more eye-catching than equally attractive men. That's a commodity you can trade on. If you want people in general to stop and look at something, have Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman show it to them. And better yet, put them in a great wardrobe.
Unfortunately, being the lovelier sex can, in many ways, turn and bite you in the butt.
Also, if you're the average news program, actual journalism's mostly out anyway- so show at least three human interest and/or waterskiing squirrel type stories for every 5 seconds of actual world news. Spoon full of sugar, you know.
