Has anyone had any experience of these (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)?
Only I'm considering buying one for general internet, e-book reading, music and DivX watching on the move.
The £179 model is what I'm looking at. 1.6GHz processor, 512Mb RAM, 8Gb SSD, and Linux OS.

Yes, as a matter of fact I have the original XP version (150-1493) with 6-cell battery and 120GB hard drive (now they have 160GB :( Note to self: don't buy products the nanosecond they come out).
I love it, but it does have one or two drawbacks. The webcam blows but I understand the newer models have a better one. I haven't been able to get the webcam video and built in mic audio to sync. It might be a software or driver issue, I don't know. It's not something I have a lot of use for (I'm an I, after all!) but the bottom line is that recording video doesn't work right 'out of the box,' at least on an XP system. Also the speakers are weak and difficult to hear if there is any background noise. I have to use USB speakers to listen to podcasts while I'm working in the kitchen.
The only other thing I can think of is that the glossy screen reflects everything, so it can be hard to see if you're outside on a sunny day. I've ordered an anti-glare film from Brando that I hope will solve the problem. The upside of the glossiness is that the display is super brilliant and sharp. People are amazed by it. It also has wide viewing angles. Considering the size of the display Acer was right to make that top notch and cut corners on some of the other components.
What else can I tell you? I love the size, it's so portable, and the display is sized to fit most websites perfectly. It definitely pays to use full screen tricks and extensions to get the maximum vertical real estate.
The NIC seems pretty good (I've gotten up to 20Mbps on it), though I have had the occasional mysterious slowdown, which may have to do with my cheapo router. I've had little problem installing software from the drives on my desktop over my home network. I do quite a bit of file sharing from my desktop, and even have a nifty little tool that will wake up my desktop from standby when I need it for something. :nerd:
I would definitely recommend checking out the user forum. It is full of all sorts of useful information:

I have had an acer aspire, not sure which version. It was crap. The motherboard blew out TWICE with a NEW motherboard the second time. I did not like it AT ALL. I have heard from friends with Acer's that they have had similar problems with motherboards etc. I would never buy an Acer. I have an NEC Versa laptop at the moment. Very good no complaints have had it since the beginning of 2006 and the only problem it has had is a crappy battery that was replaced under warrenty.

The Linux version of the AAO is decent, but it isn't perfect. I couldn't stand the default distribution installed on it (Linpus) and went for Ubuntu instead - however it requires quite a lot of tweaks to get decent performance out of it. There is decent documentation available on the Ubuntu wiki.
If you've got decent Linux experience and you're willing to spend some time with it then it's great value for money. However if you've got a bit more money to spare, or if you'd prefer XP then go for a hard disk version with Windows installed.

Bought one on sunday, and it arrived today. I'm posting on it now. It's ace. So small and dinky, and appears to run very smoothly. I've ordered an extra gig of memory and an 8gig expansion card. Pretty impressed with linpus too. Very fast to boot. Might install Ubuntu if this starts to annoy me after a few days, but for what I need it to do, I think its pretty good, and I don't really want to risk driver issues by installing another version.
Google chrome would be good but its not on linux yet.
Now just got to figure out how to get linux playing DivX's and MP3's etc, and then get a nice big USB stick for films and music.
Very impressed overall, though, and I've been acting like an Acer salesman at work all day today (I had it delivered there).
Only 179 pounds (just noticed something, the pound sign # produces a number sign \, shite).

179 pounds is a steal, and good call on the extra gig of memory (i'm guessing you mean RAM) 512 might not do it...or maybe it does? definitely let me know how ubuntu works on it if you decide to install it

512MB you can get away with, although 1GB or more makes the entire experience a lot better. Obviously you install 1GB extra for 1.5GB total as that's the maximum capacity.
The only problem with memory upgrades on the Aspire One is that it's a painful process. You have to literally take it apart as the memory slot is on the reverse side of the motherboard, it's quite stressful compared to most other laptop upgrades where you usually just take a few screws off the bottom.

Have had an acer aspire in the household for two years. It took a surprising amount of abuse and kept working. Replaced it last week, after half the keyboard died due to juice inhalation....

Acer, Toshiba, and Dell are my favorite laptop computer companies. There are lemons, however most of the companies out there use the same companies to make their motherboards. Dell used Foxconn, so does hp, gateway, and Acers in some of their systems. Sony's suck, working at a workbench, I have taken in many sony's who have had issues with their motherboards or other things blowing.
As for the AcerOne, it is one of the best alternatives to the Asus EEE PC. But to be honest, I am not a big favorite of super small Laptops. I dont need eyestrain-o vision for a screen. I am looking at a Acer that I fell in love with after doing optimizations on it at work. Comes with a 16inch screen, intel 4500gma (not my favorite aspect, I would like ati 3200 more so.) A numberpad is a big plus for me as I do speed typing using the num pad, and it has 3 gigs of ram... forgot how much space it had... I think it was 250...

I use the same Acer model...but after a year the screen started turning white at random. If it moves or is disturbed the screen turns white. Also because I used to watch a lot of DVDs on it, which may have caused premature wear and tear on the LCD. Or maybe the fan is dirty and inefficient? I don't know.
It's XP but I think I want to defrag it and switch to Linux because it has gotten slow and I'm impatient.
For me, the most durable brands are IBM and Toshiba. I think Toshiba model has a spill proof keyboard (for clumsies :)!) I have friends who use the IBM Think pad, it lasts the longest and has gotten very cheap (without an OS)

There's this outdated PDA used for wordprocessing that looks (outwardly) like a netbook. They're cheaper, but only useful for typing.

Just to let everyone know. I've broke it about 3 times now. Messing about with linux. It came with Linpus Lite, which was fast booting, but a bit limited in its capabilities. I broke that trying to get printer and USB sticks working with it.
I spent a night trying to get XP onto a USB stick to put on it, but no success.
Turned to Ubuntu, which went on ok first, but had long boot times. I broke that trying to get the boot time down (it was at 90 seconds and I reached 60 before it stopped working and I had to reboot again).
I'm just now trying to put Ubuntu on again, and not repeat the same things I did last time to break it (now I know a little more about linux). I had some issues with the SD card memory expansion corrupting though, and am afraid I've buggered up the internal SSD.
So I'm struggling now to get Ubuntu back on from scratch. Running a memtest right now actually.
Anyone know any utilities for formatting all internal disks at boot (without putting an OS on?). I think I need to 'clean' the SDD's first, and then try ubuntu again.
Oh, and it has to boot from USB (that's what's been causing the main problems - such a pain to set up, surely it could be easier than having to mess about with command prompts all the time?).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
P.S. Ubuntu ran sweet as hell when it did work the first time. Very fast and smooth once loaded, and the graphics / effects were all working too. I was just been greedy trying to reduce that 90 sec boot (Linpus booted in less than 15sec, you see - which was nice).

Oh its no use. I've right royally fucked up the internal SSD drive. I can partition it, and start a format, but it freezes at 5% into formatting. This is the same however I try to format it (XP installation, Ubuntu installation, DOS prompt, linux terminal).
Don't know what I've done to it, but I've ordered a 20Gb 1.8" HDD. Its a toshiba one typically used in IPods. Apparently its much faster than the SSD anyway, obviously has more storage space, is low power (around 1W writing) and is rated 20dB (virtually inaudible). It was £27 off ebay.
Quite annoyed about the SSD though, I thought that it'd be fast and extremely reliable, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.
Should be quite a sweet machine when its in though. The mods I'll have done will be:
Upgraded to 1.5Gb Memory
Upgraded to 20Gb 4200rpm HDD
Added an 8Gb HDSC card for extra storage
Installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
(The first Intrepid installation I put on was running very smoothly indeed, and looked luvly. I was just greedy trying to better boot times - I've learnt my lesson now. I'll put up with 90 secs now!).
So far I've spent:
Aspire one - £179.99
1Gb RAM - £12.99
8Gb SDHC - £9.99
20Gb HDD - £27.99
-------------
Total £231.00
-------------
Think thats worth it for the spec of the machine I now have, so I'm not too upset about the SSD issue.

Amazon is supposed to have the EEE PC 900 for $129 on December 1 as part of their Black Friday weekend, it will only be available to random people they email though. I was leaning towards the Aspire but if I get to be one of the lucky people to snag the EEE PC then I'll be happy too.

know this thread is old... but just thought people may be interested anyway--- I got the Samsung NC10, which has a 10" screen, so just a little bigger than the eepc and the acer, the keyboard is fantastic- sooo easy to use compared to what I was expecting. And it also has 160gb of memory and a full 1Gb of Ram. It's basically better than the laptop I had before this, and three times smaller!
I loooooove it.

my mom has an acer aspire and i'm not that satisifed when i tried using it. i just use it for playing mp3's which i think it was good at. right now i have an hp pavilion dv4000 which i have been using for 4 years already and it has not failed me ever since. i usually store photos, create websites, and play intermediate games.
i am looking forward to buying a new laptop though since my pavilion is quite big and pretty heavy when i tried bringin it during my travels. my next laptop should be light yeat heavy duty. i want to get an hp laptop again since hp has been tested by my dad for years (he's an engineer and does cad drawings etc..). we had a dell before but it failed us on the second year (that was way back 99) but the studio xps 13 might spark my interest (i just wish it's tough for travelling though as my old dell got it's motherboard messed up from travelling to one place to another...what sucks is that i have't gone outside home!!).
here's the dell studio xps 13 (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.)
i actually got to hold the larger version of this one, which is the studio xps 15, at work before. but checking the specs, i think this is already overkill for me.
bu then again, i see myself leaning more to hp again. i am interested in the hp touchsmart tx2z. i just hope the hinges are tough.

I couldn't resist! I caved in December and got the Lenovo Ideapad S10 in black (and upgraded the memory to 2gb). I'm using it right now.
The internal fan did use to drive me crazy because it was so noisy, but they came out with a bios update so I'm happy now.
But you are right, a netbook is a bigger investment if you consider the costs of the external CD/DVD drive and etc, if you choose to go down that path. I would only recommend a netbook as a supplement to your main PC.

I have one of the single core Aspire's. I don't like it very much. Recently I encountered a problem that required me to fix the master boot record, which I couldn't do with what I had available since the thing had no disk drive. I've since replaced the Acer with a Compaq I found at Bestbuy for $450ish. It cost a bit more and it's not exactly high tech, but it's a great deal more responsive than the netbook was. I think the concept of the netbook is great, but the Acer interpretation of it is seriously lacking. The low power Atom processor is pretty cool, but they paired it with a chipset that draws way more power than it does, so the battery life was at best two hours. It was a good idea to pair it with XP instead of vista to help speed things up, but even so the internet browsing experience was very slow.
I say if you want something that small keep holding out for the dual core model. You'll be much happier with it.

Right now I'm writting from an AAOne, I own the 512MB RAM, 8GB SSD that comes with Limpus Linux. Now it has 1,5GB RAM and Debian.
The main message here is: DON'T BUY THE SSD VERSION, it has a really poor write speed, to the point that it takes longer to shut down than to power on, and when more than one task is writting at the drive at the same time, the system starts suffering mini-freezes. From what I've read, it is almost impossible to have an usable XP on the SSD.
(Limpus is optimized for it and works decently, but I find it to be more a toy OS: just a few big, childlike buttons like "instant messaging", "web surfing", "office" and absolutely nothing for a user who wants serious control over the system)
In my case what I've done is creating a ramdisk and a script to copy into it the files that get more reads/writes (msn folder, firefox folder, kde folder...), and another to sync them back to the SSD to keep it up to date, also I always keep the AAOne suspended to ram, so now I have a system that comes to life and goes back to sleep in a matter of seconds, and it's even more responsive than if it had a traditional hard drive, and I'm really happy with it.
But the RAM ampliation is a must to achieve this, and you have to dissassemble it to the bone to reach the free RAM slot (voiding the warranty and risking your fragile netbook integrity). Also, nowadays when you can find cheap 8 and 16GB SD cards, it is a joke to have a 8GB drive (which is slower than a high speed memory card, too).
I would certainly go for a bigger, faster mechanical hard drive version without any doubt.

I had this issue back in October. What I did was replace the 8Gb SSD with an IPod 1.8" HDD (a 30Gb Toshiba one). Picked it up off ebay for about £30, and it is a good fit into the space left when you remove the SSD. Direct swap, don't even need to buy another cable or adaptor or anything.
I'm happy with it now. I'm using Mandriva 2009, by the way. I'm really impressed with it, and all hardware works out of the box, with the exclusion of wifi, which is a simple fix if you search online how to do it.
The dual-core Atom based ones are gonna be excellent as well, I reckon, esp with 2Gb RAM :)

Sorry I'm taking so long...
I used both and they were both pretty slow. Also, I had the one with the 120 GB HDD, which worked fine. I have no complaints about the disk at all.
The reason I think you'll like a 2GB DC netbook so much better is that the machine I replaced the Acer with is a 2GB DC machine which, although it isn't a netbook and so isn't ultra-super-awesome-small, is loads faster. So much so in fact that I have absolutely no desire now to fix my desktop machine!

I think on ebay there are some 9-cell battery packs. They're huge, but it's 9-10 hours. Actually, I think my aspire one is a little light, and would benefit from more weight and a bigger back area, raising up the keyboard.
Problem is, the cost is a bit much. The six cell was about £60 when I looked (1/3 the price of the laptop itself), and I think the 9-cell would be £90+ ( I can't remember exactly what it was).

Someone at work bought a 'new version', that was supposed to be 16Gb SSD, and 1Gb RAM.
On delivery, he found that the 16Gb really meant 8Gb SSD, plus an 8Gb HCSD in the left hand card reader (cop-out really), and the 1Gb RAM, rather than being 1Gb built into the motherboard, was the previous 512Mb built into the MB, and an extra 512Mb stick in he only extension slot.
So, overall, max memory possible is still only 1,5Gb, and the internal SSD is still small.
Bit of a con really, he thought he was getting a newer version, but it was identical to mine from October, just with a couple of bundled extras (which I bought for only £25 extra anyway).

I think these types of laptop are going to become extremely popular, and develop fast. That atom processor is pretty amazing. I heard somewhere that Intel developed it for the $100 laptop campaign. So we're getting the benefits of that project, really.
With the manufacture volumes that OLPC are producing, I can see that development is going to be massively accelerated by all their suppliers (processors, screens, motherboards).
Meaning, I'm probably going to want to replace my aspire one in a few months time, as one much better and nicer looking, will be released, for say, £150 (this one was £180).

Hey AnotherNormal - just looked at that link, but not being in any way techy didn't understand much... what will be better about this new Atom platform? - faster? - and are the new netbooks likely to have solid state drives?
I have the Samsung NC10 and my dad really likes it and wants to get one... but if there's something better coming along soon I'd like to let him know.
I'm not convinced of the SSD benefits at the moment (I went for a netbook with a 160GB hard drive)... what do you think?

There are lots of netbooks with 160GB hard drives. My preference is 160GB not SSD: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
If you need something now they are pretty good but if you can wait you might want to.
Sometimes it seems like we wait and wait because of what is coming :) but think about windows 7 and the new cpu.
They are saying the new cpu will use battery more efficiently and run cooler.

I bought an Asus Eee Pc netbook for about $250. It works better than I thought it would. It is alittle slow playing large programs at first, like chess master, however never freezes.
With it, you can do any one thing, at one time, without a problem.

Running a acer aspire one d150 1161. Love it, and have used a flash running MINT Linux. Want to install Ubuntu to a flash and try running that...

hello all again.
So, I have the Samsung NC10, as I've mentioned before.
My dad wants a netbook... he really likes the nC10's size, capability and esp Battery life (6hrs), but he doesn't like its looks - he says it feels cheap and plasticky.
I figure most netbooks are going to be that way. But does anyone know of one with comparable specs and batt life that is more expensively built... or at least looks more expensively built?

Hmm, well I'm satisfied with the quality of my Aspire One. It's pretty heavy for its size, and has a good sized keyboard too. Feels pretty durable. Battery life is only 3 hours though, unless you buy bigger batteries starting at £50.
There're better models out now too I think. A 10.1" screen one which I like the look of. It's basically the same overall dimensions as my version too; mine has a 1" border on both sides of the screen, where the new one goes right to the edge, I think.
Look out for the new release Intel Atom processors too. The N330's; they're dual core and I would expect far superior to what I have in this laptop. I might donate this one to a family member in a few months, which will give me an opportunity to upgrade to a nice new model.

Acer added Bluetooth: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
Acer added an 11.6" screen: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
Now all we need is Windows 7.
Wonder when USB3 will be available ?

I've given in and bought a new netbook. After all the problems (of my own doing, though), I just got frustrated and opted to get an Asus EeePC 1008HA with XP Home.
It's got:
Atom N280 - 1.66GHz
1Gb RAM
160Gb HDD
10.1" Screen
108.11n Wifi
Inbuilt bluetooth
Webcam, mics etc...etc...
And I'm not going to mess about modifying this one. More trouble than its worth. I think my aspire was fine really, but I just thought I could make it better and ended up breaking it.
I'm writing on the aspire right now, but quite frequently it just keeps freezing, shutting down, and I suspect causing me internet connection problems via 3G. So I finally said enough is enough.
The EeePC I have ordered is £280 in Comet, but I got it for £199.99 with next day delivery from Asus's online store, which I'm pretty happy with.
Hopefully it's a good model. Anyone had any experience with them??
